  • Closest I've ever seen someone come to wearing a "Yogi Bear hat."

  • Does anyone know the one movie he did up 'till the mid 50's?

  • I always enjoyed these shows. Thanks for posting. Roy

  • I love the fake chewing gum thing in the beginning, right as he sits down.

  • Art was the original Felix Unger. He played opposite Walter Matthau in The Odd Couple on Broadway.

  • He had great handwriting... compared to the other comedians I've seen in all these clips. Favorite is still Buddy Hackett's drawing of himself though.

  • WHAT'S MY LINE, A TRUE TV CLASSIC !

  • Al Carney, Hahahahahahaha.

  • art carney & jackie gleason, i can't imagine two more talented performers being paired up on television ever again.

  • hands like a woman

  • A classic !

  • He is cute!!!

  • Art forever!

    George Vreeland Hill

  • it's funny, they got Jackie Gleason's name wrong too when he was on this program

  • he turned that limp into a swagger

  • It was nice of Norton, um I mean Art Carney to get all dressed up for this show! LOL.

  • Art Carney was so sexy! Yes, I'm being serious! His cute looks were very underrated!!

  • @MissLori

... it must be the fedora he's wearing. :))

  • @cheeriosinabowl and the vest!!!

  • @MissLori Kind of like hank azaria. i think he's very hot.

  • @chop11111 Superior Bowmanship

  • He was on the Star Wars Holiday Special.. Ha ha ha

  • My father went to AA meetings with him in NY

  • Yogi Bear incarnate.

  • hello ball!

  • He was the best!! An original and timeless.Would be just as funny to todays generations as he was back then.R.I.P. norton!!

  • They funny thing is Art Carney is a legend. Who is that woman?

  • Art carney is funny without even trying that's rare to find and yes I too believe taking your hat off is a sign of great respect. Mr. Carney you are truly missed we desperately need people like you in show business today. RIP

  • I find the fact that he took off his hat before greeting the panel a sign of great respect. Wish we did that in this generation.

  • @palorius we could do that in this generation all it takes is one person to do it. And don't do it to set a trend, do it because by you doing it it's already being done today.

  • I couldn't agree more with you NJkid67. His nuance performance in Harry & Tonto is a classic. He truly was a great, and I do mean great actor. I miss this guy!

  • I love how Art Carney appears dressed as Norton!! lol!

  • Hard to hear.

  • He is one of a kind!

We don't see Comedians with this kind of talent today, Richard Prio was the last.

  • The hideous Bennett Cerf blows yet another name "AL CARNEY INDEED" At least there wasn't a pretty girl guest for him to sleaze over

  • Awesome Awesome Awesome video!!!

    THANKS for posting this!!!!!!

  • Art Carney is an outstanding choice. Thank you for sharing this great and fun video.

  • These are addicting and make you long for nostilgia but that one guy gets everyone's name wrong.

  • The answers to the radio questions are interesting - "yes" to dramatic acting, but also "yes" to the program being a comedy. I don't know what Carney is referring to, but he did appear on the Henry Morgan Show (and so did Arnold Stang, whom Arlene thought he was). It was purely a comedy program.

  • Art Carney was the best character actor that ever lived. Period.

  • @FaganRoberts

You know what's interesting. He was the only one who lived long enough to see Y2K the others died.

  • @CollegeLoheart Thanks for the reply but Joyce Randolph is still alive. Do a search here on YT and you can watch an interesting video about her career and her times with the Honeymooners. I think she's in her 80's now.

  • @FaganRoberts

Oh......that's lovely. I'll check it out thanks.

  • @CollegeLoheart because he was younger then the other cast

  • sorry about that ralph, it'd denzell washington...

  • before denzell williams, mt. vernon had art carney!

  • Someone please post his (final) 1974 appearance during which he talks about Harry and Tonto prior to winning the Academy Award.

  • The horribly ignorant contiual malaprop Bennett Cerf does it again. He couldldn't get a name right if it was his own !!!.. AL CARNEY !!!!!

  • A Brilliant Actor & Comedian! RIP Art Carney.

  • The late great Mr Carney was an outstanding talent....he could do it all...equally good in both drama and comedy. He is SORELY missed. THANK YOU so very much for sharing this delightful footage with us !!! :)

  • Is Dorothy wearing a bra for a mask???

  • what a really cool guy and true American

  • EDWARD LILLY WHITE NORTON

  • Did we know...

Art Carney- WW2 infantryman...wounded in France. His limp is the result of shrapnel and 9 months in the hospital.

    RIP

  • As Jackie used to introduce him on his Variety show: "AAAAHHHHHHT CAAAAHNEY!"

He is missed! If you ever get the chance, check out his turn on "The Twilight Zone" as a dept. store Santa-- it'll break your heart!

  • I liked him in The Late Show as a detective who takes the bus

  • ...After 19 years. Duh.

  • Television history fail. It was the most popular game show of its time.

  • I agree with tterrace's comments...they are riffing on the McCarthy hearings....how interesting to hear some reference to those dark days that is not so glum.

  • Jackie Gleason and Art Carney are so famous to us now, yet on this show Jackie was accidently named Jimmy Gleason and Art named Al Carney by the panelists.

  • Famous???

  • Well, not any more, but certainly in the years after this show aired. : )

  • I guess my comment didnt get posted. What i wanted to say is Art was one of the greatest comediens.

  • I read that Jackie Gleason broke his leg during a live TV sketch on his show at this time. This is why Art Carney hosted the Gleason show for a few weeks. Thanks for posting this interesting clip from the Golden Age of television.

  • Also, Dorothy Kilgallen got all that screen time because her questions kept getting "yes" answers; play only passed to the next panelist when one got a "no."

  • A couple times what seem to be innocuous comments and responses get laughs from both the panel and the audience, such as when Carney asks, very deliberately, "Would you mind repeating the question," and one panelist responds, "Is that a point of order?" These would have been very familiar references to the televised Army-McCarthy hearings, and to Senator Joseph McCarthy in particular.

  • I can't believe it took them so long to figure out he was talking about televison.

  • I don't think he was a ham at all. He seemed like a quiet, introspective guy who was just naturally funny. He did dramatic turns on "Twilight Zone" and. of course, the great film "Harry & Tonto". A very gifted guy with a real touch for pathos.

  • don't be hard on yourself!

  • It's Al Carney!!!

  • I love watching Dorothy Kilgallen -- she most often got the mystery guest correct! The other panelists on the show would agree with me -- if they were alive.

  • Killgallen takes too much camera time!

  • he is wearing his costume from the honeymooners lol

  • Gawd, Arlene had luscious lips back then.

  • LOVE Art Carney. So funny, so multitalented.

Dorothy Kilgallen drives me nuts, hogging all the screentime she can.

  • I love how Art is wearing Norton's costume. LOL!!

  • The one picture he made prior to The Honeymooners was the Jimmy Stewart film Pot O' Gold (very minor part as an announcer). He would have a great role in The Yellow Rolls-Royce, a small role in A Guide for the Married Man, then win the Academy Award for his fourth film Harry and Tonto. After that he did quite a few more theatrical films but even more so on television.

  • He did some great movies in his later career; The Late Show and Going In Style come to mind. And I would have loved to have seen him as Felix Unger in the original Odd Couple. In fact, he and Matthau would later be re-teamed in House Calls.

  • He was so cute.

  • Master of his craft. How we loved Ed Norton in THE HONEYMOONERS! Mr. Carney, you are missed. Peace to your bright spirit. Thanks for sharing this What's My Line clip!

  • he ended up as a bigger star than all of them

    RIP Art we miss you

  • genius.

  • Very funny.

  • Episode dated 16 May 1954

  • Oh man I had a huge crush on him.

  • Al Carney!!! We've been watching "The Honeymooners" for 50-plus years, so it's easy to overlook the fact that every great star and celebrity was once an unknown!! What a great clip - as are they all!!

  • Brithgob: How right you are! "TV!!!! - Duuuuh!"

  • Thank you, joanfontainefan, for this wonderful series!!! It's bringing me SO MUCH joy!! :)

  • Brilliant preformer!!

  • Didn't you just want to scream at Dorothy, "TELEVISION, you idiot!"?

  • I KNOW! I mean, she's ON television at that moment! It's so frustrating!

  • Art carney was one of the best Comedic/Dramatic actors that ever lived and doesn't get enough credit for that. RIP Mr Carney you were one of the best!

  • you want to see Art Carney in a great film? Try Harry and Tonto. Done in the 70's and I belive he even wont the Oscar for it.

  • Yes he did, while Al Pacino (Godfather - Part II) and even Jack Nicholson (Chinatown) and Dustin Hoffman (Lenny) gave far more deserving performances, but weren't as long as Carney in the bussiness.

  • oh i dont know about that. i've seen all those and i think art did a much better performance.

  • I accept your opinion, but Pacino gives kinda one of the best performances ever. Those eyes!!!

  • thanx for posting this classic.

  • lol

  • Appears in full Ed Norton regalia
