He had great handwriting... compared to the other comedians I've seen in all these clips. Favorite is still Buddy Hackett's drawing of himself though.
Art carney is funny without even trying that's rare to find and yes I too believe taking your hat off is a sign of great respect. Mr. Carney you are truly missed we desperately need people like you in show business today. RIP
@palorius we could do that in this generation all it takes is one person to do it. And don't do it to set a trend, do it because by you doing it it's already being done today.
I couldn't agree more with you NJkid67. His nuance performance in Harry & Tonto is a classic. He truly was a great, and I do mean great actor. I miss this guy!
The answers to the radio questions are interesting - "yes" to dramatic acting, but also "yes" to the program being a comedy. I don't know what Carney is referring to, but he did appear on the Henry Morgan Show (and so did Arnold Stang, whom Arlene thought he was). It was purely a comedy program.
@CollegeLoheart Thanks for the reply but Joyce Randolph is still alive. Do a search here on YT and you can watch an interesting video about her career and her times with the Honeymooners. I think she's in her 80's now.
The late great Mr Carney was an outstanding talent....he could do it all...equally good in both drama and comedy. He is SORELY missed. THANK YOU so very much for sharing this delightful footage with us !!! :)
I agree with tterrace's comments...they are riffing on the McCarthy hearings....how interesting to hear some reference to those dark days that is not so glum.
Jackie Gleason and Art Carney are so famous to us now, yet on this show Jackie was accidently named Jimmy Gleason and Art named Al Carney by the panelists.
I read that Jackie Gleason broke his leg during a live TV sketch on his show at this time. This is why Art Carney hosted the Gleason show for a few weeks. Thanks for posting this interesting clip from the Golden Age of television.
Also, Dorothy Kilgallen got all that screen time because her questions kept getting "yes" answers; play only passed to the next panelist when one got a "no."
A couple times what seem to be innocuous comments and responses get laughs from both the panel and the audience, such as when Carney asks, very deliberately, "Would you mind repeating the question," and one panelist responds, "Is that a point of order?" These would have been very familiar references to the televised Army-McCarthy hearings, and to Senator Joseph McCarthy in particular.
I don't think he was a ham at all. He seemed like a quiet, introspective guy who was just naturally funny. He did dramatic turns on "Twilight Zone" and. of course, the great film "Harry & Tonto". A very gifted guy with a real touch for pathos.
I love watching Dorothy Kilgallen -- she most often got the mystery guest correct! The other panelists on the show would agree with me -- if they were alive.
The one picture he made prior to The Honeymooners was the Jimmy Stewart film Pot O' Gold (very minor part as an announcer). He would have a great role in The Yellow Rolls-Royce, a small role in A Guide for the Married Man, then win the Academy Award for his fourth film Harry and Tonto. After that he did quite a few more theatrical films but even more so on television.
He did some great movies in his later career; The Late Show and Going In Style come to mind. And I would have loved to have seen him as Felix Unger in the original Odd Couple. In fact, he and Matthau would later be re-teamed in House Calls.
Master of his craft. How we loved Ed Norton in THE HONEYMOONERS! Mr. Carney, you are missed. Peace to your bright spirit. Thanks for sharing this What's My Line clip!
Al Carney!!! We've been watching "The Honeymooners" for 50-plus years, so it's easy to overlook the fact that every great star and celebrity was once an unknown!! What a great clip - as are they all!!
Art carney was one of the best Comedic/Dramatic actors that ever lived and doesn't get enough credit for that. RIP Mr Carney you were one of the best!
Yes he did, while Al Pacino (Godfather - Part II) and even Jack Nicholson (Chinatown) and Dustin Hoffman (Lenny) gave far more deserving performances, but weren't as long as Carney in the bussiness.
Closest I've ever seen someone come to wearing a "Yogi Bear hat."
