Toadstool's hair was blonde in original artwork, and Link's hair was dirty blonde in Link to the Past's artwork.

@8kkmartin No. This is based on EARLY mario games where peach still had brown hair and Daisy didn't exist. Many characters go through some changes at some point. Link had brown haird in the first two Zelda games, and PINK hair in the third.

Another example from a different series is Pokemon. Back in 1997-1999, News 12 Long Island reported that Pokemon creaters made the female characters too sexy looking. This stuff is typical in cartoons.

@dynastypurple1 Nintendo's technology wasn't too good at the time, so in the early games, her hair was red or brown. If you look at Pauline and Peach's original concept art, you can see they were both blonde.
