Didn't know 400D handles 2-row chopper. My SMDTA smokes bad on 1-row in 12ft green corn. Others are talking "book" HP. Once I had a SWD-6 having a D264 with 277098R4 head, and a so-called IH dealer's "power-pack" rebuild during the 1970's . I cosmetically restored it in 1996. Plenty of power, made my SM and SMDTA both look weak. Put it on a shop's hydro pto dynometer and it stayed a steady 65hp. They stressed it up to 70hp, where the torque started to fall off. What a powerful old beast.
that's an old IH chopper too isn't it? Sounds like the ones I grew up with, they chopped and blew with the same set of blades...had that distinct howl...nice video
Too bad nobody makes new machinery like this any more. Would be nice to buy equipment that was suited for 30 to 100 acres without having to look at the neighbor's scrap heap or operating something older than your grandparents. I love these old machines but parts can become an issue.
I LOVE the 400 !!! My father had 2 [ plus newer ones ] till he sold the farm in 81 . We had a potato farm in northern Maine from 01-81. appr. 1000 acres [ 300-400 in cultivation . the rest , a comb. of hardwood /softwood ] The 400's did service as snowplows , crop sprayers & pullers of 2 row potato diggers . You don't see too many NFE,s up here [ too hilly ] . I hope to have a 400 someday , with a bucket to move snow around or lift things .
This old Farmall will probley still be working long after the shiney new so called tractors of today are in the scrap heap.Try choping silage with a new 50hp.tractor and you'll probley overheat it within a couple hours.
Well, I love treating those old tractors to a bit of a dress up. Always makes me feel good to put one in tip top condition and put on a paint job to match.

that is a very cool vid. Thanks for posting. I always wondered what it looked like to farm in the fifties. The old 400 does a nice job too!
