  • I'm so surprised that this organist, quite accomplished, would take this work at that tempo. One cannot grasp the musical communication. Phrases are abrupt. Too metronomic. Was this part of a masterclass or something? On how not to play Vierne in a live accoustical space?!? Shocking!

  • Brilliant performance, one letdown, too fast!

  • Excellent! I loved it

  • Effortless playing by a master of the instrument! All the notes are there, great to have this posting.

  • I think this tempo is not right... you can hear how the reverb can't keep up with the notes...all you'll hear is a big noise at the other end of the cathedral...

too bad, the tempo doesn't do justice to an otherwise outstanding performance..

  • @GJmusique Actually, the audtio portion of this was recorded at the front of the church -- half a city block from the inistrument.

  • I almost went to this....

  • Great Final!

Is it a reverb for digital 32' reeds at 5:52?

  • @jeanseborg The 32' reed on this organ isn't digital. You are more than likely just hearing possible feedback or the actual resonance of the building. I played this organ back in college when our choir did a concert here and St. Patrick's is about as live a building as you can get for acoustics; probably one of the best in the nation. The marriage of room and organ is amazing!!! Lively-Fulcher also has another wonderful installation at the RC Cathedral in DC that is again just a perfect match.

  • Excellent performance here. 44 ranks may be few for a 3-manual, but in the right setting they can do the job.

  • @bcschmerker - 44 ranks, small for a 3-manual? Here in Britain you'll rarely find a 2-manual bigger than 30 ranks (if that), so 30 ranks up to about 60 (maximum) for a 3-manual. Most 50+ rank organs are four-manual instruments.

  • @EccentricRichard In anticipation of future construction at OMS Japanese Christian Church, Walnut Creek, CA, USA, I did a study of organ configurations around dual pulpits and a baptistry, using the D. A. Flentrop 3-manual at Harvard for a baseline on account of anticipated Sanctuary dimensions. I came up with 59 ranks controlled by 49 stops to meet known music requirements for the blended service.
