Just work on the behavior more. After walking into him without the treat, add a cue so say "back up" and walk into him so he backs up. Try saying back up without walking into him and if he does yay if he doesn't try walking into him again :)

  • How do I get my dog to back up from me when the dog is facing me and I am standing still...so they back up just on cue and I am still...

  • I taught my lab this cue successfully, but since the last few days I've noticed that he backs up on cue and then starts walking forward without my cue. He has just assumed that once he does what I ask, he can right away do what he wants. How do I break that? I noticed how Splash waits for what you say after backing up at 1:56. How do I get my Buddy to do that? Please HELP!

  • I like your videos. I think they are some of the best ones on youtube, for dog training. You speak clearly, you demonstrate everything clearly, and you show the right way to train the dog. Thanks.

  • Many TKS

  • @rizkhandagr8: repeitiously say the verbal cue while doing the hand motion so the dog will get used to hearing the same exact thing every time. ..yes it takes time, patience, and being able to take a step back or two.

  • I will teach my dog and see how it goes.

I am having trouble with making the dog do circle on my tuen command. When I have treat she does fine, even without treat she does pretty good; but I have to do the hand circle motion and she follows my Hand to circle. If I just say TURN she doesn't turn.

I taught her jump, touch, down, sit commands but turn command is problem.

I also have problem with COME command. Any tips will be appreciated.

    Thanks

  • So helpful!

  • When I put the treat under his chin like you did in the video and start to move backwards he will just go into a sit position, same with it above his head

  • I was really anxious to get my puppy , but after watching your videos, you helped me a lot! I can't thank you enough for your helpful videos ! You're great ! And your dogs are really well trained! :)

  • what editor do u use?

  • Ok video I do all this with out treats that's the difference with police k9 obedience training and being a cookie pusher

  • Nice ass

  • Nice to see how you treat your dogs :)

  • Lovely vid - really nice way of thinking laterally to avoid a problem :-) Definitely one to teach my pups, and one that can be used in so many circumstances.

  • Doesn't this training make your dogs OBSESSED about treats? They'll start to think of you as a treat machine.

  • No. When teaching a behavior treats can be used as a lure or as a reward. As the dog learns what we are teaching, treats are given less frequently. I use treats (as well as toys) with my four to occasionally reward them for behaviors they already know. I do it to show my appreciation for a job well done and because it makes me like a slot machine. They never know when they may hit the jackpot.

  • @Sinekyre14 Well, if someone gives you a treat for doing something well do you get obsessive ?

  • Can you tain my dogs :D lol jk

  • Im only now just starting to use CLICKER training on my dogs.. and i cant work out WHY i never got into sooner.. your videos are GREAT

Thanks and keep up the great work

( never mind spelling! WHO REALLY CARES!!!! LOL )

  • I can't even begin to thank you enough for your wonderful, infinitely-helpful videos! I watched your YT channel all day yesterday, and in the past 12 hrs have seen more results in my dog than I have able to achieve in 1.5 yrs of basic praise/treat training. I am so excited to begin this new, supportive relationship with him. You have opened up a realm of training possibilities.

You are a wonderful teacher and a valuable resource. I will be sure to pass this along to all my dog-owning friends!

  • Do i have to have a "clicker" or cant i just clap my hands or some other clicking noise?

  • @Civicblabla no you don't, you can use a world like "yes' but a sound that always sounds the same is best. Some people make a clicking noise with their mouth. I clap for my dogs some times (like in the middle of a routine) however at other times it doesnt work as well, as you might need your hand to hold a lure etc... like in this video. You can use a ball point pen if it has a loud enough click to it.

  • @kikopup Thanks ur videos are realy awsome!

  • Thank you for your brilliant series of videos. I have two labradors who have recently arrived in Australia and were pulling on their leashes. Following your clicker training tips and slowly progressing to the back-up I have had two wonderful walks with my dogs Flynn and Pai this morning. It is really exciting to see how much they enjoy the walk and importantly the interaction with me. I am thrilled and highly motivated to continue with this wonderful method. Thank you for taking the time.

  • @rwburnell I actually struggle with language. So you will find lots of "misspellings" in my writing and videos. I have had trouble hearing and pronouncing words since I was a child. I still confuse curb, with "curve",,, I am dyslexic as well. I will focus on making videos and enjoy the process rather than getting depressed looking for errors in my speech patterns. I have seen the word "forwards" in written English, but I do believe you are right... that I am misusing "proper" English

  • @kikopup maybe you here the words the way it is used in the German Dog training world: the word "forwards: = vorwerts/voraus it means kind a like "lets go"/go ahead. I am German and have been living in America for nearly 20 years now and I also have trouble with some words and pronouncements, but just like you kikopup I will not let it stop me from working my dogs and teaching dog Obedience; I love it to much.Keep up the good work you are great!

  • @rwburnell However I don't really mind that I do not speak properly, as neither did Shakespeare- he used the word "forwards" :)

    SONNET 60

Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore,

    So do our minutes hasten to their end;

Each changing place with that which goes before,

In sequent toil all forwards do contend.

  • @kikopup

My mother told me that Shakespeare wrote for all people to enjoy the theater. You make videos for all people to enjoy their pets.

  • @rwburnell CORRECTION: it might not be listed in some concise dictionaries but "forwards" IS a legitimate English word. It's listed as an adverb in the Oxford English Dictionary online and has been in use since the 15th century. (You need a subscription to access this, but other comprehensive dictionaries will list it as well). @Emily, you always communicate clearly in your videos in any case. And thanks for this video - as usual, really helpful!

  • @rwburnell ur an annoying prick

  • @rwburnell Oh come on! Language is dynamic, fluid and constantly changing. Words change over time through a number of processes and everyone has their own idiolect. Actually writing a comment about this is discriminatory.

  • You are awesome! Thank you for the tip.

  • I really love that

  • Another helpful video! Thanks

  • My dog like to sit when I teach them to back up. Now I will try your trick.

    Thanks you so much.

  • Thank you! I am going to try this.

  • Awesome video, thanks!

  • Very useful trick, made easy with this video!

  • i love this!!

  • Thank you SO much Emily !!

I got my dog to back up by walking towards her. But now we're stuck, I can't get her to back up without moving into her. :-(

  • AB FAB-LOVE these videos of yours, my shelter volunteer friends are using "yanking" and pulling and yanking more to teach them who is boss-at the instruction of the ACO's! I am trying to convert slowly and your vids are so logical and stress free that I think it will help THank you so much.

  • Excellent! Easy when you know how. Thanks again. keep up the good work!

  • This is great thanx so much for your videos. I used to think that only some certine special dogs can be trained and that the rest are just not born with it. I got an 11 week old golden about a week and a half ago. I thought maybe I'll try to teach him down. With in an hour he had it down. two days later I thought I'd try to teach him how to cross his paws (from watching your video) and even though it's taking him a bit longer to get just right he is actually learning. Thanx for all your tips.

  • ADD AND SUB ME IF U LUV DOGS!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for the great tips! I followed one of your other loose leash walking videos, and it worked great. I noticed my dog already starting to automatically back up if the leash started to tighten. When he gets himself back in proper position now, he touches my knee with his nose. I hadn't thought about putting it on a que.

  • thanks! I am going to try this with my dogs.

  • Thanks for another great video! The only way I could get Berri to back up was to shape it, he simply wouldn't move back with a lure. Now that he knows the general movement I can try luring him to get him to back up while at heel (as opposed to directly in front of me only). What a great application though.

  • very cool!

thanks for sharing this. It gave me some ideas to try with my dog.

    Mary

  • another great video Emily. I hope to see you soon in Madrid! Happy New Year!

  • Shaking my head in amazement. Another tremendous video!

  • Great training aid will start working on this one this weekend. I must say YOU ARE ONE OF MY FAV trainers online. Your vdeos are so clear and well stated. Thank you for all the tips.

  • Thanks .... I am going to have to try it.

  • Great idea - never thought of backing up towards - have always used away! Thanks - will be training that one!

  • Wow, this is fantastic! : )

    Thanks for sharing! : )

A very informative and simple video! : )

    5*s!

  • Emily Thank you!

These always seem to appear at just the right time.

  • wow I can't wait to try this with my pup, we just got 'go forward' on the leash down ( she was a little unsure what to do, but we're getting there) now I have to teach her this so she's not pulling when she decides that going forward is awesome. LOL

  • Awesome! This is great not only for walking...but I've been having trouble with backing up in obedience heel, this helps! Thanks Emily!

  • Fantastic video and fantastic idea. When Desperado loses focus and starts to walk out front I stop until he resets himself at my side. Before he would have to do a finish to my right of left, but I think now I'll teach him to back up since that will take less room in a cramped space.

  • What a great help! Today I start this training with my dogs. Thank you. 5 *

  • ooo, need to try. At the moment Mi either sits when I stop moving forward, or does a little spin back into heel position.

  • Kiko is such a beautiful pup! I did get my rescue Chihuahua 1/31/09. About all she wants to do is sleep. That's OK with my migraines. We just lie around together. She is so so sweet!

  • I like it! simple and effective. Thanks you Kikopup, you have helped a lot in the past and future.

  • Good video :)

Splash is beautiful.. I'm expecing a border collie puppy this summer to teach canine freestyle and more, I wanted to adopt a grey one but they're not here in iceland.. what a shame.. :) I'm going to adopt a brown one instead

  • thank you a lot about your videos, you are an amazing trainer

  • I never would of thought of this!! Great to know this tip! :) 5*s

  • Genius!!!!!

  • You are awesome! What if your dog is really "independent" like a terrier and listens only when he wants to.

  • Nice Secret! Love it! Bandit knows this well! HEHE!

  • Awesome! I love how many videos you've been pushing out lately - keep them coming.

  • Fantastic video! I am in dog school-and my 9 month old is good at many things--but not come--she is terrible. do you have a video address that. She has an independent stubborn streak. (half dachshund). As a first time dog owner--well--may not have been the best choice.

  • first class! 5*

  • Great idea - I'm going to do that too !!

  • Great!

  • I'm definitely teaching this one! Thanks! Great explanations and demonstrations.

  • awesome trainer

  • great!

  • Excelent!

  • fantastic!

  • i love your videos! im so excited to train my puppy next year using your principles! i think the positive reinforcement is the best method for having a smart dog, plus one that loves you!
