@Nogli It was used as a general purpose beep - it's still used as a general purpose beep :P IE you can use it to tell you when you get a new email, when you get a new IM, when you get an error box, when an application wants your attention, etc.
His comment during the movie about engineers was absolutely ignorant and illustrates widespread attitude problem with the whole Mac culture. They don't care how it works, they just want it to work, and anyone who actually makes it work is some sort of dork without a girlfriend. If it weren't for Apple engineers working tirelessly over multiple incarnations of the hardware, there wouldn't be the robust Macs we have today. You can't brag about a product while shitting on your engineers.
You're missing the point. He was an engineer. You also contradicted yourself. Earlier in the movie, he explained how not "so wonderful and happy" it was to work for Apple as an engineer. I would probably be disgruntled too if I had to go through some of the headaches with the Apple board he had to go through.
1:13 Just got this email? In 90? You mean fax or something?
RawwestHide 1 year ago
@RawwestHide People have been emailing since the 80's. And even before that.

He says he told some people. Just not everybody till 99. I'm sure the story was around. Christ what a petty argument.

I am very much looking for the clip where Jim talks about the engineers putting magnets next to the hard drive. DO you have that segment?

I knew about the origins of the name long before 1999, so his story can't be completely accurate.

It's coming from the man himself, he should know better than anyone else.
Nogli 2 years ago 9
Well clearly he doesn't because there were many of us who knew about this LONG before 1999.

If his story isn't completely accurate, what has he got wrong (seriously, this isn't a stab, but for genuine research for a college project.)
Also, what was the sound actually used for? Error or startup/ shutdown etc.?
