  • I get chills watching this!

  • Absolutely my favorite skater of all time...

  • WHO CARES THAT WAS YEARS AGO!

  • I CAN BELIEVE KAT WITT WAS ON STEROIDS!! SHE IS LOOKING MORE MASCULINE EVERY DAY!

  • One of the things I love about this recording is the number of points at which the commentators don't make any comment beyond noises of disbelief, such when she does the triple-triple, the double axel-triple salchow seq, and the triple flip and lutz. You really don't find that with any other skater, but it all over the commentaries on Midori Ito.

  • Why in the world was she not on the podium?!? Shame on the judges!

  • @NettieKay Because she's Japanese...back then, all sports like figure skating and diving that use subjective scoring go for the white person. That only ended when Michelle Kwan arrived. Also, Midori was simply not very attractive.

  • @infinera06 Midori was pretty and Kristi Yamaguchi won Olympic Gold long before mediocre michelle came along.

  • @getrealandsee That should have read Midori is pretty. I know that society values outward appearance very highly which is sad since its genetics...not choice.

  • @getrealandsee Midori's main competitor at the time was Jill Trenary. Jill was graceful and beautiful. Midori was short, stubby, graceless, and sports a big nose. It would be sad if all those things were ignored in a sport like figure skating, which is like ballet on ice. Imagine a fat stubby person in Swan Lake.

  • @infinera06 Three Times a Lady

By David Swerdlick 14 February 2006

This is the article...again I VEHEMENTLY disagree and in fact RESENT the "Asian Excuse"....Lipinski creamed Kwan....and to pull out a racist card is just plain crazy....all as in ALL odds were on Michelle and she got scared and skated like she always did...timidly and convinced the Gold was hers.....all the hulabaloo about the headline...all that had to happen was 'fellow American beats Kwan' but no....jump on THAT bandwagon!!

  • @infinera06 " short,stubby,graceless and a big nose'...ha ha

you left out big ears, massive thighs, bow legs, and crooked teeth

All adds up to extremely attractive and adorable

I've known her for 30 years, and bottom line is she's gorgeoous

  • @hennagaijin100 Yeah...in a Mickey Mouse kind of way.

  • @getrealandsee You are blind.

  • @infinera06 I don't agree with this but here it is: Lipinski seemed to benefit from her role as underdog, as well as from the politics of perception. Only six years earlier, Kristi Yamaguchi, another Asian American woman, had won the gold medal for figure skating. Perhaps that was all there was room for.

  • @infinera06 No way....even the commentators agree...she is adorable...I never did quite see Jill Trenary's appeal but then I haven't watched her videos either...not many anyway....and again....you are right....I will believe that the Miss America pageant is about the scholarships and achievements of the American woman when a short fat ugly American woman wears that crown!! Give me a break...how STUPID does Donnie Trump think we are....anyway...genetics determine a whole lot:(:(

  • @getrealandsee Kristi won because she was competing against Midori! There was no white skater who was a legitimate threat in the mix. Kristi was the prettier of the 2, and Midori fell...so there was no dispute. But if there is a white skater in the mix...the white skater will win. Example: Lipinski vs Kwan...and Witt vs Debbie Thomas. But nowadays, Asian skaters dominate...that sort of bias is no longer possible.

  • @infinera06 I read somewhere that Frank Carroll took Michelle on because she was Asian...the small build was an asset....(I am French Irish Swiss....in other words a flat out mutt)....Tara beat the sequins off of Kwan to win the Olympic Gold...of that I am sure....however......to be honest I have read one opinion that supports your contention...these days I am afraid to say anything that might have a whiff of not being politically correct however innocent it and I may be...sad:(

  • @getrealandsee Michelle won that gold, but Tara was awarded it when the judges decided that "Tara skated with artistry", for the first time in her life! Racism in sports exist. Back in 84 LA Olympics, Greg Louganis was awarded gold in platform diving on the last dive, even though a Chinese diver did a better dive/same difficulty.. The score was made just enough to eek out the gold. Even the commentators were perplexed. Now the Chinese dominates in diving, so no more score tampering.

  • @infinera06 Didn't Kristi fall as well? You are right...Asians are dominating the sport which makes total sense to me...they are of smaller build....(God, I hope I said that right)....I have freckles due to my Irish heritage...naturally curly hair which was dark eons ago and blue eyes...that's the Irish...this isn't about me but just sayin' that genetics are what they are...

  • @getrealandsee Yeah...then the small framed Asian athletes get accused of lying about their age!

  • And NO...Kristi never fell because her jumps are about as high as my sandals.

  • @infinera06 And medicore Michelle Kwan was NO lady, either. Period!! She was an ungracious loser and an even worse 'winner'....anyway....putting a cork in my big mouth now because I am off on another tangent and this isn't the time or place for it:)-:)

  • @infinera06: I think you have made some simplistic conclusions in your posts. U argue that there has been a racial bias against non-white skaters until Kwan, but your examples are not credible. I think it's more about country of origin, frankly. Europe and N. America dominated skating until recently, and Ito was a victim of this. Witt usually beat Thomas b/c Witt was simply better! Can u name a time Thomas should have won and didn't? And Lu Chen won worlds over Nicole Bobek in 1995.

  • @infinera06: Finally, you claim non-white skaters only won when there were no white competitors. But what about 1990 worlds, when Ito beat Trenary (her main competition). If biased judging against non-white skaters was as bad as you claim, the judges could have easily buried Ito in the figures, giving her no chance at a medal. I'm not saying judging wasn't biased (it WAS), but you place WAY too much emphasis on race, while ignoring all other possibilities and variables.

  • No doubt that the judges should give her some 6.0's marks. Everybody who has conscience knows that she should get some medal in this OLYS .

  • A star is born!!!!

  • 本当に素晴らしい。定期的に観てる自分に気付きますw何度も観ても素晴らしい。

  • I think this is the best performance I've seen. Her jumps are huge, and she's built for it. Whether or not it's IJS and 6.0, All the jumps are still the same. And her's was HUGE! No triple axel, but overall performance was full of energy and speed.

  • too bad midori was a skater during the 6.0 system.. if she was a skater now,, she is...

  • Deserved first in LP

  • いや~、素晴らしい!今見ても。ジャンプの高さが全く違います。

    今もこの高さで跳べる選手はいません。

    とても23年前の演技には見えません。

  • Now, to say loyal ....

Katarina Witt has previously characterized the figure skating, they put art on the ice, like no other.

For this and this is so real, it deserves the first Paltz and the Carmen-shorter ... so full of soul was gone and danced.

    I'm German. and not biased.

  • みどりになら 銀河点が出ても合点がいきます

  • 新システムなら加点の嵐。

  • Under the new judging system this ladies event would have ended much differently.

  • マツコが絶賛するだけのことはありますね。鳥肌立った。

  • 伊藤みどりは史上最強のスケーター!

  • 素晴らしい演技には、観客や解説、ジャッジも誠実に答える。

    そんな昔々のちょっといい話。

  • The impact of this performance must be too strong for the people of 20 years ago.

  • Does anyone know what this music is?

  • @Vydio Le Corsaire Pas de Deux Adagio

    by Riccardo Drigo

    Grand Pas Classique Coda

    by Daniel Auber

    Paquita Adagio/Coda

    by Ludwig Minkus

    It's a great music selection!

  • @Koan777 Thank you very much! Can anyone think of any other skater in Olympic history so magnificent yet didn't take home a medal?

  • @Vydio Midori was amazing for sure. The last of the powerhouse yet artistic skaters. However, to answer your question, one simply has to look to Janet Lynn.

  • @railynnelson

If I'm not mistaken, she got a bronze.

  • Comment removed

  • @Vydio She did in Sapporo in '72, but Ito won Silver in Albertville in '92, so I figured you were talking Gold Medals.

  • Had a typo on my original.

  • She was so much ahead of her time... Only the compulsory figures were in her way! And don't say that there was any lack on the artistic side so it didn't match with the athletic one. I simply cannot agree with that! She was a lady on the ice... Outstanding forever!!!!

  • @USAGymnast Even Yuna kim's LP is a joke comparing to this.

  • @kev7978

    so TRUE!!!

  • @USAGymnast She even made some men skaters looked like a joke.

  • もう人外と言っていいほどの脚力だな。みどりと同じ高さでジャンプできる女子スケーターなんて出て来ないだろ。

  • 今みてもすごい・・・

  • This performance is even more incredible if you know her story-and the six months prior to Calgary.

  • Comment removed

  • @thehoopify.. Your comment is moronic to say the least! A little biased are we?

Remember, this is a sport, not a recital. If Witt is so amazing and Ito so bad, as you claim, why did Ito get a standing ovation and Witt get a lackluster, forced applause with not a soul standing?

I actually liked Witt a lot, and thought she was a great competitor, but her Carmen program was all glitz, no soul or athletics.

Ito was the greatest jumper of all time, Witt was a good showman, period.

  • @TheHoopify who the hell knows katarina witt now? No one bloody knows who is katarina witt now cause she sucks. HAHA. Unlike midori, she is still remembered and well known until now because she's the one that revolutionized women's figure skating, not katarina the nitwit.

  • 久しぶりに見たらトリプルルッツがスローモーションのように見えた。

  • this performance was just out of this world. I just watched kat witt's performance again and, dont get me wrong - I think she's a great skater, but seriously when you compare midori's skate and witt's... midori's was far superior. its ridiculous that she did not medal.

  • @elinzme Because of the ridiculously high proportion of the figure......

  • @fjn219 screw the figures.

  • Electric! This performance single handedly erased school figures: Audiences were tired of seeing incredible programs ignored and mediocre attempts continue to win. After all, this is supposed to be a SPORT! Ito is brilliant.

  • @mlc2005 For which every figure skating fan, no matter from what country, should be eternally grateful. Thank you Midori.

  • Amazing jumps and good spins. A strong technical performance even by today's standards. Too bad she started out so low in the rankings. It was really a good move to get rid of the compulsories.

  • She should have been 1st in the SP.

  • hardly Liz Manley, Liz had a huge triple lutz and deserved the gold at these Olympics. The rest of the field certainly looked outclassed by Midori but not Manley.

  • Manley was far outclassed as well. Her Lutz did not have the same level of Quality as Midori's and she landed 4 Triples (NONE in combination), compared to Midori's 7.

  • if she would performed triple axel during Calgary Olympic, then she would been the medalist for sure...

  • After 20 years, this is the performance of performances of any Olympic women figure skating competition. Though I have always adored Kat Witt, her winning gold medal performance in Calgary seems so laughable and ridiculous. Perhaps the board of judges must feel ashamed today after watching Midori's performance again. I've always believed that Midori Ito's skating made such influence that compulsories had to be removed a few years later. What a shame.

  • you know I am german and I was ready to defend kati witt before watching this. but all nation´s pride aside I must say that midori just blew me away!absolutely fantastic!!! I would´ve given her the gold medal, def.!

  • @jayweh I agree

  • I couldn't agree more!! Love the music in this, especially the middle part where she gets the crowd going

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA

  • She was not only one of the best in women´s competition in history, she was THE BEST, ever! Such ease in the jumps, incredible rotation, she was incredible! Which girl was able to show such jumps with such ease? Nobody! If figures hadn´t existed in the past, the rest wouldn´t have had any chance to beat her, I think she would have won nearly all competitions! Midori was a gift for us and for the ISU. No wonder that she had the nickname: Tsunami girl! One word: Legend!

  • that triple axel brought me to tears!

  • 翻訳ありがとうございます!

    スタンディングオベーション=みどりちゃん!!

  • She got the only standing ovation in the program all night.

  • I stopped watching the winter Olympics altogether after her loss. She was not only robbed but robbed horribly. But what do I know?

  • Those sound about right.

  • 訳ものすごい有難かったです!!

  • That is an interesting point to bring up. I think it depends when the figures were to have been removed. If they were removed a year before the Olympics then I agree, she still wouldnt have had a chance. However if they removed say after 84 she would have been in with a big chance. She would have already established a big reputation. For example in the 84-85 season she beat both Chin and Thomas in fall events, showing how quickly and early she would have rose up without figures.

  • mmmmm dont like dick here how many times he just said that it was an athletic program like 4 5 timess?? she even had better laybacks position than the womans today what else she needed she had the carisma with the people the jumps and a big smile such shame she didnt win and even worst were 5th overall

  • she was FUCKIN ROBBED HARDCORE!! SHe so revoltingly cute!

  • Wow...

  • I agree. Sadly with her placement in figures no way she would have medaled even had that happened. I did the math in my head to make sure and even winning the short and long would not have put her over Thomas, even with Thomas bumped down to 3rd in the short and 5th in the long.

  • How gusty.

  • Midori Ito was robbed of the gold medal. I didn't know for the life of me how Katarina Witt won the Gold. Midori's routine was far more technical and artistic.

  • I still get chills when I watch this program. She's a skater's skater. Her jumping is amazing. You don't get a high wrap like that if you're barely off the ground.

  • 20 years later, I still am amazed by this incredible skater - I loved figure skating before her, but no one is missed more today than Midori Ito - she was one of a kind. Her Calgary performances were impeccible, and I still get chills rewatching them over and over again, even today. Amazing talent. Her triple lutz at the beginning of the long program was even better than any Brian Boitano ever performed!

  • That was FANTASTIC!!! Too bad she didn't win D:

  • PML!!! Midori was out there to do a sport that involved fast skating, jumping and spinning while the other girls were out there to look cute. What a joke!!!

  • She was 5th. If it wasn't for the stupid old school figures, She would've definetly won a medal.

  • oops i mean 88 olypics

  • wad's her rank in the 98 olympics?

  • Her birthday is August 13, 1969.

  • how old is she in the 88 olympics

  • わかりやすい字幕ありがとうございます!
