His music was heavily influenced by American funk-- he gave much credit to James Brown and others like him. So I'm not sure that he'd "roll in his grave" about having his music exposed to a new generation of Americans.

excuse me? lmapoo....u obviously dont know anyhting abt FELA! he wasnt influenced by any american funk..he was original..he created his own style ..dont make up stuff..i grew up listening to his music, i swear he will be offended by this rubbish u just said!...afrobeat has nuttin to do with american funk or james brown! ok?

Have you ever even listened to funk? The influences are there, I don't even care what Fela actually said, but if you read a book or two about him, I'm betting you will find that your opinions aren't as well founded as you claim. Use your ears instead of your emotions to decide how much influence American music has had on Afrobeat.

@catalystdrums123 your ears cant be trust Afro beat is not influenced by no american music,Funk is an african inspired music using african drums not the opposite,Afro beat was created in the late 60's by FELA,and made of yoruba traditional rythms.Funk music evolved in the 70-80's you probably know the infamous Soul makossa song learn it was released in 1972 and played by blk american Djs..

@chrissiebosede, your correct the Afro beat was unique,FELA was unique.some americans always want to take credit on any african achievement without even knowing what they are talking abt.back in those days it was americans that discovered that africans had such great music.
