Down here in the American Okanogan, we have valleys exploding with turkeys. In the Chilowist, a high, narrow valley here, I once saw the funniest sight I've ever seen. I was driving up the valley road, and there was a small traffic jam--hundreds (true!) of turkeys were sauntering down the road, ducking into people's backyards. Up the hill a piece were about ten very frustrated hunters, unable to shoot into a populated area--the birds keep juuuuuuuuuust out of their reach! Smart, fast turkeys!
Benjamin Franklin wanted to make the wild turkey the national bird for the newly-formed USA--wild birds are wise, canny creatures. But we made the eagle our national bird instead!
