Amazing movie. Honest, straightforward, realistic ! It left me in a devastating situation with tears rolling down all over my face! There was no real atonement for a deed that no words can describe "... he looked at me and i let him go...": Just too heavy to bear, just too evil to be forgiven, nothing to make it up with. The main character is surviving just to be tortured by his deed. Even the mother took pity on him! Superb! The emotional, awesome music makes it even more heartbreaking! A must!
At least the evil doer went to prison and the other inmates gave some deserved justice. I didn't understand this scene when it went down until the end of the movie, where he FINALLY admits his evil deed to himself and his victim. It was a great, honest movie which I think has the answer.
@lordtains At what point does it ever decisively let you know that it's been made right? And when is the moment of the mother's forgiveness? That's what I love so much about this film, is that it's simply posing the question of whether or not saving a life can act as sufficient vindication for taking one. It leaves it morally ambiguous.
Well it's more like he finally forgives himself because he relives the moment and makes the right choice this time. And I think him finally admitting that it was his fault also allowed for the mother to move on.

This music sounds like Death is the Road to Awe from The Fountain. Does anyone know what the composition is?

and he makes it right by saving another child's life.
And the mother forgives him. It was really really really good.

But that's how I saw it. It's been a while back.
