Essendon were a great team 99-01. Unfortunately for them history only shows 1 premiership. Been a carlton fan makes me enjoy only seeing 1 flag from the bombers of 99-01. 2000 wasn't very enjoyable but beating Essendon in 1999 and seeing Essendon loose 01 GF was very sweet. However this 2000 team has to b ranked as 1 of the best team of all time. A pity for those players couldn't win more as they did deserve more flags as much as I hate to say it.

Essendon beat all of the other 15 teams easily in 2000...Geelong on the other hand lost a game by 15 goals in 2007. Geelong are an amazing side but don't quite dominate teams like Essendon did, mostly because they have a pretty average foward line

@hol0015 - Caracella was not traded, we lost him Heffernan (Melb) and Blumfield (Rich) in the same year for various reasons, mainly salary cap considerations. Caracella was the only one of the 3 to ever be close to his 2000 form again, but I still reckon at Bris and Coll he was a shadow if his Bomber days.

AND NOW, Hawthorn have an average defence. And Geelong has a weak forward line, that Essendon would shut down simply...Mooney and Lonergan...compare it to Essendon.
I think the Geelong team of 2007 would beat the Essendon 2000 team, because also they were strong all over the ground! Defence - Harley, Hunt and Taylor. Midfield - G.Ablett, Bartel, Ling, Ottens. And then Mooney, Johnson and N.Ablett.
So you think Geelongs forward line is weak? Take a look at the score of the 2007 grand final.
2. Hunt and Taylor, Fletch and Wellman are better and Lloyd and Lucas would kill them!
3. Mooney is overrated and not that good and doesn't score enough goals with all his opportunites! Johnson is the equivalent of Blake Caracella, Gary Moorcroft or Darren Bewick. N.Ablett was hopeless.

We lost about 4 of our premiership players and I'm talking about ONE season. Brisbane lost far more games in all of their winning seasons than Essendon in 2000. And NO, Essendon (2000) and Geelong (2007) would probs beat Brisbane of one of those years. Remember Brisy have state advantage!

the thing with llyod i think he put too much body size on him back in his unstopable days he was alot skinnier wich made him more agfile and flexable.... lance franklin hant kicked a bag of 10+ yet llyod has on a few occasions so its hard to say franklin probly kick more goals by the time he finishes his career..... but i think llyod had potentiol to beat tony lockets record but i dont think he will now
Franklin's accuracy from a mark is ridiculously poor. He's magic under pressure, which is why people love him; on the run, he can snap it from most anywhere, but with a man on the mark in front of him, he's worryingly inaccurate.
Essendon were better than Geelong are now. We had a much beter forward line and were physically much tougher and more intimidating with players like Wallis, Hardwick, Solomon, Johnson and Barnard. Also the Bombers would have smahed them in the ruck with Barnes and Allesio.
I think the greatest team has to be out of Essendon and the Brisbane team of 2001-2004.
IMO the 2000 Essendon side remain the greatest side in history, they had an almost magic ability to weave through other sides and demolish them. You have to consider yourself fortunate to have been able to follow them through 2000, may well be the greatest season by the greatest team in history..

if i had to guess id say geelong, there talent and depth and overall team aspect is better. The game has evolved so much from 2000 id say its a no brainer
id say essendon. easily. they averaged a score of 130 per game and rarely looked like losing. when they scored 198 points it was against the team ranked 4th and had an 11 point loss. geelong had an 86 point loss and looked like losing a few times and almost did a couple of times and they scored their over 200 against the bottom ranked team and 182 over 2nd bottom. thers a no brainer. but yes geelong08 are one of the top teams in history
why the hell would you say geelong now is better than essendon 2000. essendon dropped 1 game by 11 points, went on to win the premiership, geelong dropped 2. by 86 and 25 or something like that. and essendon got a premiership

not really, after essendons 2000 win i think 2 players went to brisbane for salary cap room. if essendon 2000 played brisbane 01 or 02 or 03, essendon wouldve won but if you combined the years yes brisbane would win
brisbane had too much players that dug in when they needed em man plus they beat the bombers in the 2001 grand final and smashed em earlier that same year by alot so id pick brisbane.........
i mean essendon 2000 is better than brisbane 2001, but if essendon maybe kept some players from that year they wouldve won in 2000. lloyd couldve made lockett's record but i reckon the couple of years that essendon spent near the bottom killed his chance. he will reach 1000 though. maybe he will get lockett if a miracle can happen.

carlton would have beaten your "almost invincible" mob 1 round earlier than the bulldogs did in round 21, had your dirty players (eg. mark johnson taking out koutoufides in mid air) not taken out 3 of our key players early in the first quarter. the margin at 3/4 time was 2 points, yet we had 1 player on the bench the entire game so couldnt possibly win the last quarter! we would have beaten u in the finals too had we a full side (silvagni was out aswell)
u beat us by 21 points in round 20. it was practically even at 3/4 time. in the prelim final when we had our best 5-6 players out u beat us by 45 points
great great team, geelong of 2007 would challenge though and the brisbane lions era eclipses them

I think the Essendon team of 2000 would beat Geelong or Hawthorn of today because the bombers were strong all over the ground! Defence - Fletcher and Wellman, midfield - hird, misiti, blumfield, j.johnson, caracella. And then Lloyd (100+ goals), Lucas, Bewick.
AND NOW, Hawthorn have an average defence. And Geelong has a weak forward line, that Essendon would shut down simply...Mooney and Lonergan...compare it to Essendon.

3. Mooney is overrated and not that good and doesn't score enough goals with all his opportunites! Johnson is the equivalent of Blake Caracella, Gary Moorcroft or Darren Bewick. N.Ablett was hopeless.

You're right with the forward line, theres was better than what we have now. Nathan Ablett was not hopeless, Mooney has his days, and Johnson produces magic. I didn't meantion scarlett for a reason. You can't just rely on Lloyd and Lucas. But either way..
I wouldn't really care because Geelong are my favourite, but i'll always back the Dons. Unless.. They verse Geelong.

Why youse talking about Geelong today vs Bombers of 2000 vsing, arent you forgetting the 4years Brisbane dominated the comp?, and in 2001 Brisbane beat the bombers in the grand final, im not sure if bombers lost alot of players after 2000, but they wouldnt of lost much players, (i think caracella went to brisbane in 2001?) but still Brisbane in 2001,2002, 2003 and sorta 2004 considering they only lost the grand final in 2004, are the team of the century (fact) and would beat both teams imo

We lost about 4 of our premiership players and I'm talking about ONE season. Brisbane lost far more games in all of their winning seasons than Essendon in 2000. And NO, Essendon (2000) and Geelong (2007) would probs beat Brisbane of one of those years. Remember Brisy have state advantage!

the thing with llyod i think he put too much body size on him back in his unstopable days he was alot skinnier wich made him more agfile and flexable.... lance franklin hant kicked a bag of 10+ yet llyod has on a few occasions so its hard to say franklin probly kick more goals by the time he finishes his career..... but i think llyod had potentiol to beat tony lockets record but i dont think he will now

Franklin's accuracy from a mark is ridiculously poor. He's magic under pressure, which is why people love him; on the run, he can snap it from most anywhere, but with a man on the mark in front of him, he's worryingly inaccurate.

Essendon were better than Geelong are now. We had a much beter forward line and were physically much tougher and more intimidating with players like Wallis, Hardwick, Solomon, Johnson and Barnard. Also the Bombers would have smahed them in the ruck with Barnes and Allesio.
I think the greatest team has to be out of Essendon and the Brisbane team of 2001-2004.

IMO the 2000 Essendon side remain the greatest side in history, they had an almost magic ability to weave through other sides and demolish them. You have to consider yourself fortunate to have been able to follow them through 2000, may well be the greatest season by the greatest team in history..

id say essendon. easily. they averaged a score of 130 per game and rarely looked like losing. when they scored 198 points it was against the team ranked 4th and had an 11 point loss. geelong had an 86 point loss and looked like losing a few times and almost did a couple of times and they scored their over 200 against the bottom ranked team and 182 over 2nd bottom. thers a no brainer. but yes geelong08 are one of the top teams in history

i mean essendon 2000 is better than brisbane 2001, but if essendon maybe kept some players from that year they wouldve won in 2000. lloyd couldve made lockett's record but i reckon the couple of years that essendon spent near the bottom killed his chance. he will reach 1000 though. maybe he will get lockett if a miracle can happen.

carlton would have beaten your "almost invincible" mob 1 round earlier than the bulldogs did in round 21, had your dirty players (eg. mark johnson taking out koutoufides in mid air) not taken out 3 of our key players early in the first quarter. the margin at 3/4 time was 2 points, yet we had 1 player on the bench the entire game so couldnt possibly win the last quarter! we would have beaten u in the finals too had we a full side (silvagni was out aswell)
