@livelifehight your friend obvious has no idea how to use linux neither do you if you cause the shortcuts to get "eaten" by the start bar. Say that you will never touch linux because of that is like saying "I'm never going to touch a car because I don't know how to drive"
mmm haht about HTML? I wonder how the internet would have been without HTML being opensource.. wait, right IT WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN AT ALL (at least for another decade...)

@windowsforvista Android, GZip, BZip/BZip2, LZMA/LZMA2, ARPANET (though it actually used RfC), Linux, MySQL, PHP, Python (though it has no practical implementation), Apache, the dreaded Joomla/Droopal/Wordpress bastards, Eclipse, osCommerce, OpenOffice, Firefox, 7-zip (which has the only good LZMA compresison GUI on Windows), VirtualDub, BitTorrent, Subversion, NetBeans, Ubuntu, VNC, Duke Nukem 3D (Windows Version),...
@dcj991 Chrome is better. Firefox is fucking gay and its idiot community leaders hate the internet and want to make it impossible to use by inventing new W3C and AAA standards interpretations constantly.
just remember this. anyone who uses gmail. the servers google use to run gmail are LINUX servers... linux owns if you're good with computers... otherwise get a mac (or if you're not completely retarded, a PC)
Big parts of Mac OS are open source, including for example the technology Safari uses, and most of the system kernel: Machintosh wouldn't still exist today without open source. The website you are viewing runs on a moslty open source system. And you can pay a lot for using open source, it's not always free!
Linux is kinda cool, but too fussy for everyday use imo. You don't have the same commercial software for Linux platforms as for Mac or PC and that usually pisses people off; they have to get used to a different environment that might not even be fully compatible with the popular Mac or Windows software.
But the idea is good. A few years back, when I was running Ubuntu on my PC I loved that I didn't have to pay for any software. Imagine if the whole world worked like that :P
@kornholioa No, it's not related to FF, for what is publicly known: it uses WebKit to render the pages, which is a fork (which means an evolution started from a copy) of KHTML, which was developed on linux as part of the KDE project (see kde.org, i love it!).
They are both fully opensource, and in that world copying is good, its a right you're given!
"Open source is an approach to the design, development, and distribution of software, offering practical accessibility to a software's source code." Thats the definition of open source, and that is Google Chrome.
I will not be satisfied until you come up with 20 more examples. I also want explanations as to how they are used and the benefits from each. Now go!!!!!! :)
Not really, cause I'll have no idea what you're talking about. I got my 1st computer at 27. These spoofs are meant to be funny like, haha hee-hee. Like our website says :
Computers are computers. Macs are great and so are PCs. So are toasters-what's your point? It's just a computer, get over it!
That being said, my 4 slot toaster is way better than my toaster oven............. oh no I just started another controversy!!! :)
@TrueNuff Mac was never great, they are expensive and where outdated before they even where made, people allways say "their programs are so good" no they are not and you can run them on a "pc" to.
You pay 400$ for the computer and another 2600$ for the apple logo on it. My laptop cost me 500$ and its better then a macbook pro much better, and the macbook pro i compare it to costs 2500$.
linux is somewhat right. some media and software should be free for download (some stuff that you have to pay for. i know some media and software are free.)
i think it was both. we used to have windows on it a few years back, it was still pretty slow. but on linux it gave me this weird gray screen and froze for a minute...
maybe firefox is better than IE, but it sucks at ram management, if the guys at mozilla are so brilliant why do people have to download another program to manage firefox' ram correctly?
bind - Most used DNS-Server, apache - Most used Webserver, - postfix & Sendmail, 90% of all big freemail companies uses one of them, Openoffice is good enough for the standart jobs which normal people do at home, VLC - no other player supports so much file formats out-of-the-box,
If you say something like "These Programmes are crap" then you give some reasons why. If you cant find a reason: Shut up and keep quiet while the adults talk.
I tried Scribus three Times. It has no chance against Indesign (or Quark) it it comes to professional layouts. Maybe you can do a good layout with it, but try to make databased-publishing. Or Try to built a Workflow with Scribus - Impossible. Most OSS is good to use and nice to have (as an alternative). But not every Open Source Programm can be a full replacement of a commercial Software. Linux is a good OS for Server and maybe a ton of other devices. But Its not an OS for Idiots.
People only care about the client anymore. My friend says Linux sucks just because he can't play games on it. Linux doesn't suck. You don't need games on a freaking server.
the real killer is that linux was right when he said mac's mom was open source. since everybody knows that os x is just a stripped down version of the freeBSD kernel.
Torrent's and Hacked programs, along with most DVD ripped software that's downloadable through torrent and so forth... there is like over millions of programs being open sourced to this day, via hack or just installation and about 85% of the time they work... so ya, there is just a few things are open sourced

Firefox... the most popular web browser.
Sqlite... the best database for mobile device programs.
Wine... a great emulator for running Windows applications on non-Windows OSes without actually buying Windows.
Substance... a nice Java look and feel system which opens up a lot of appearance options.
Pidgin... a great chat client that links to multiple accounts.
This is why I hate comparison commercials/spoofs. Way too biased regardless of who is doing them in some fashion.

Granted, open-source does have a few good things goin for it, but usually if there's a commercial equivalent, 9 times out of 10, its better.
