After hearing the ugly duckling story as a kid so many times, I always thought that baby swans would be really hideous... imagine my surprise when I saw a photo of a baby swan. :|

The waiting part is like the one in I Wanna Singa. The male bird asked the female if the eggs hatch already but the female said not yet. Then the male waked backed and forth for a long time and made a trench. The eggs had hatched!

This was the last in the series of animated shorts made by Walt Disney called the Silly Symphonies, and what a short it was! That beautiful last shot - with the swan family swimming off - is such a perfect exit for a series that had begun a decade earlier with an ambitious young Walt and a struggling handful of artists trying to master an art form in its infancy.

When the so-called ugly duckling cries, I felt sooo bad. And when he saw the wooden duck smiling at him and thought he finally found a friend, I just about cried. When he cried with his mouth open wide, I felt sad but couldn't help chuckling through my tears as well.

Ahh I love this short. When I was little I hated when films made me cry. But now I love films that can make me cry as long as the ending's happy. ;)

Wonderful cartoon, it is a much better version of an Anderson story then the awful new Disney version of Anderson's The Tin Soldier in Fantasia 2000! Once again the NEW Disney changes the bittersweet ending of a fairy tale and replaces it with a happy one after they made the Tin soldier and Ballerina trite and dull! As they did with the Little Mermaid! The acting of the Ugly Duckling and his parents are so much better then the frantic, bland characters of today's Disney' cartoons!!

Hmm, the ending somewhat confuses me - the duckling, even though his family rejected him, chooses to abandon them? Was the duckling not of their species and accidentally put in the nest? Did the mother cheat on the husband with a (goose?). I feel like i'm left with a lot of questions.

The question of how the swan egg ever got into the ducks' nest in the first place was never answered in the original Hans Christian Andersen story, either. The most Disney could really do with that was attach a funny scene of the father duck accusing his wife of cheating on him.
