What a gorgeous and powerful voice. I love the purity and beauty of Jaroussky's voice, but it is missing the complexity, richness, and power of this man's incredible voice.
@davehshs Of course, because PJ isn't a real countertenor like Daniels but just a pop singer performing classical stuff without any depth, richness, complexity and with total disattachment from the image. He is just a falsettist...
@serenaluce ... ouch, Serena. My question is, are you talking about personal character or vocal quality when you say PJ is a pop singer and DD is the genuine article ? I agree he is better, but I just don't know why, if it is the way he sounds or the facial expressions and body language and apparent emotions, the whole package. Is it who he is or what he sounds like?
Daniels has one of the most beautiful voices in history. The fact that he is compelling onstage and very good looking are but two more factors in his greatness as an artist.

Great Scott!! This is some of the best singing I have heard in YEARS. SO tasteful, such pathos, and the ornaments...I'm completely bowled over. Thank you for sharing this.
Somptueuse interprétation, absolument parfait, habité.La volonté de mise en scène de faire contraster la virilité de l'homme traditionnel avec cette voix "féminine" qui en émane est assez bien vue,Daniels est si bon qu'on en oublie l'atroce décor.Bravo Daniel!
"l'atrocce decor" LOL oh WELL SAID! Isn't it disgusting? Perhaps it was on purpose to accentuate the sheer vocal beauty, non je plaisante.. As a lower voice I listen to him before a lot of mezzo recordings, he just gets it, and it's beautiful.
According to Beethoven, "Handel is the greatest composer that ever lived. I would uncover my head and kneel before his tomb." I don't necessarily agree, but there is no need to trash the man who was truly one of the greatest.
who for heaven's sake did this horrible costume?! he lucks as if he has just finished browsing in a trashbin! or even more like and old queen having no mirror...
even more pity because the aria is sung very well, actually!
This production has a stupendous singers... and as good as they are that's how how stupid the direction/production is. Somehow, I forgive it all for the beauty of the music and singers.
Gorgeous. Gorgeous. Transcendent. Amazing. My heart is drawn right out of me on those long lovely notes. Totally beautiful. But I do hate the trenchcoat and hideous orange chairs. We just need to close our eyes and be transported!
Intense, passionate, riveting, haunting. It´s hard to think of any better version of this magnificent aria (But I agree: the costume and the setting are appaling).
I know the gender of Dido, but I guess you didn't get that I was thinking out of the box. Besides, wouldn't that be a great idea to present Dido & Aeneas in 2009 in cross gendered roles? BUT, the danger there is permitting liberalism in modern opera. My point is, Daniel's voice would perhaps intimidate traditional mezzo's if given the chance.
No it wouldn't. :( I'm a contralto and I don't care for the fact most of the reportoire for female contraltos is mostly "pants roles". I always try to avoid such roles myself in my career. I think its wrong either way for both men and women to play the other.
I agree with you totally, the male soprano alto voice is often superior to the female voice and the mystery keeps em guessing.
When Farinelli was visited by Mozart in bologna, Farnilli said "this man will put us out of a job" I still want to see Aeneas as a big burly Trojan with a beard and spear who could only sing in bass voice.
I stumbled across this by accident I had never heard of David Daniels before . I was blown away ,what a stunning performance. He has the most heavenly voice , I was moved to tears.
DD is of course great singer, but no mach to PJ or AS.

Whomever came up with these tasteless colors, costumes and a set - why did you have to do that to this great opera, mediocre minds? :(

I usually really don't care for countertenors, but his voice is supreme! A rich, rounded tone and ringing vibrato. great post!!!!

Handel is (one of) the best composers of all rimes°!
camposi 2 years ago 3
This comment has received too many negative votes show
He wrote quickly and often "borrowed" the works of other composers and recycled his own.
His fugues are weakly constructed and he ruined himself twice as his business enterprises failed into bancruptcy.
Long live Bach!
Blue hat. Strange writing on the wall. Is he supposed to be a Jew, lamenting?
I prefer the version in "Farinelli".

According to Beethoven, "Handel is the greatest composer that ever lived. I would uncover my head and kneel before his tomb." I don't necessarily agree, but there is no need to trash the man who was truly one of the greatest.
MrValentinus 2 years ago 3
1. Beethoven knew the works of many comosers?
2. All he had to do to kneel before Handel's tomb was to go to Westminster Abbey (Haydn had already been to London as had JC Bach.)
How do you measure "great" and "greatest"? These are rather overblown Romantic statements in my view.
Telling the truth is not "trashing" unless you can prove your accusation.

Dido's lament is sung by a female character. Not that transvestites aren't common in opera but most modern male singers don't sing female roles
