Dido's lament is sung by a female character. Not that transvestites aren't common in opera but most modern male singers don't sing female roles

I know the gender of Dido, but I guess you didn't get that I was thinking out of the box. Besides, wouldn't that be a great idea to present Dido & Aeneas in 2009 in cross gendered roles? BUT, the danger there is permitting liberalism in modern opera. My point is, Daniel's voice would perhaps intimidate traditional mezzo's if given the chance.

No it wouldn't. :( I'm a contralto and I don't care for the fact most of the reportoire for female contraltos is mostly "pants roles". I always try to avoid such roles myself in my career. I think its wrong either way for both men and women to play the other.

When Farinelli was visited by Mozart in bologna, Farnilli said "this man will put us out of a job" I still want to see Aeneas as a big burly Trojan with a beard and spear who could only sing in bass voice.
