You seem to have a lot of the same things I suffered from when I still had vision. What I found quite pleasant and found would reduce eye strain and the subsequent horrible head aches when using a computer, was use a black or dark grey background (I too have photophobia, still, so dark grey would work better, less contrast seemed to lessen the head aches) and big yellow/orange font. Also, I had my monitor set to 100+herz, since anything less I would experience as flicker, really eye straining.
Bugger them if they are unacceptable about you and your guide dog Jemma, you are wanting your independence and you thought a guide dog would help, and it did!

Are you farsighted? Your lenses look very strong and magnifying. What do you see without your glasses? Also, the thick plastic frames look cute.
