How someone can find joy in a "God" who has to slaughter his own son in a bloody ritual in order to come to terms with his creation is beyond me. But to each his own.
@yochanan12 you seem to have genuine concerns. imo sin is much more grave and serious than our public view it to be these days, but there needed to be a grave and serious demonstration of love and sacrifice that took the humanity of Christ to it's max to save us from our sins.
That is absolutely gorgeous. I believe this hymn was introduced to Great Britain during one of Billy Graham's crusades. For those of us across the pond in the U.S., who are the elderly gentlemen shown in the beautiful red coats?
The elderly gentlemen are Chelsea Pensioners.Permanent residents of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, they must have at least 20 years service in the army , be free of family obligations and be over 65 to qualify. They wear the red coats mostly for ceremonial duties such as this.
Thank you. Does "hospital" connote what would be considered a retirement home in the US? I assume it is not the same as a US "hospital" -- a place to go only when you're sick.
Magnificent!!!!!! Finally a classic version, correct speed, and wonderful descant, and of course, no words to describe the organ. Thank you so much for posting this. It actually brought tears to my eyes.
Wow! I finally found a decent, dignified version of this hymn on youtube. Every other version I've come across sounds like pop singers (or pop singer wanna-be's) trying to win a Grammy.
@Kubrickfilmfan73 I agree with you, nice to hear this sung how it was intended to be sung unlike so many recordings just on youtube of singers messing about with "trendy" curles and wobbles on the tune and turning it into a completely different, almost unrecognisable hymn.
For this reason I put a recording on youtube of me playing it on the organ, faster than this but then I was not accompanying singers :-)
Great hymn

@Roseburg93 the red coats are worn by "in patients" of the royal hospital and are worn all the time.

It's very good to see the Anglicans singing this rather contemporary low-church hymn. They do it up real nice :D
