The road is pretty good, except a section of ~6km (600m elevation) after the visitor's center .
Ride time was 4:12 hours (+the time in car for the unpaved section) .
There's deep sand alternating with gravel (big stones, i even couldn't imagine to ride up with a mountainbike .
I don't know why they "forgot" to pave this section,cause later on the road is perfect again until the top,it's amazing to ride up and reach the telescopes by bike .

@davetone I started in Hilo at ~ 06:30 AM .

@Zaskar77 Hi, the ride time on bike was 4:12 for the paved road (~3600m elevation) plus the time in car (for the unpaved section) .

I didn't ride down by bike, i went down by car (a friend accompanied me with a rented Ford Explorer)...
