I don't like it. A very emotionally intense French dance (not originally a Christmas carol), but a poor performance here. I think adding a bass drone chord was a bad idea, for one thing; destroys the intimacy of the piece. Doubling the tempo also destroys the intimacy and makes it seem more like a barn dance than the bittersweet song it can be in other treatments. (Compare the performance of this song by Mannheim Steamroller on their 1984 Christmas album for a very different version.)
Un flambeau, Jeanette, Isabelle -- Un flambeau! Courons au berceau! C'est Jésus, bonnes gens du hameau. Le Christ est né; Marie appelle! Ah! Ah! Ah! Que la Mère est belle, Ah! Ah! Ah! Que l'Enfant est beau! Qui vient la, frappant de la porte? Qui vient la, en frappant comme ça? Ouvrez-donc, j'ai pose sur un plat Des bons gateaux, qu'ici j'apporte Toc! Toc! Toc! Ouvrons-nous la porte! Toc! Toc! Toc! Faisons grand gala! C'est un tort, quand l'Enfant sommeille, C'est un tort de crier si fort.
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (January 2, Christmas 2), we sang a hymn set to this tune. It is Love Has Come, written by Ken Bible, born 1950. It is #292 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship.
@CelticMusings Actually she has combined the two separate tunes, beautifully, in this arrangement. She alternates between "Un Flambeau" and "Three Ships". Lovely arrangement! Thank you for posting it!
@yummi2x0 : "Three Ships" is another nice Christmas carol, about a century older than "Un Flambeau", but not as intimate or emotional. Similar melodies, but not the same. (Mannheim Steamroller's 1984 Christmas album has both songs on it (instrumental versions) if you want to compare.)
I find pagans very amusing... They hear something that is mildly "celtic" and they think they are renewing with their pagan roots... when they are really listening to christian songs written in christian times by christian composers and writers. Face it, the pagan Celts didn't write their music, so we have no way to know how their music sounded. Same thing with ancient roman or greek music. By the way this song is French and was composed in the 16th century.
Sure. But the way the song is performed is trying to evoke the style of the "celts" based on traditional music performed by the descendants of those people. Besides, the spirit of the song and the season are just as resonant to non-Christians as to Christians. Maybe this type of music just puts them in mind of their spiritual roots.
I agree a thousand % with Annyinha. Loreena McKennitt truly is alike a druidess bard reborn into modern times! A truly gifted artist, musician, & singer!!!

Just a playful comment, no dissing any religion here, but the druidess/bard is playing a medley of two thoroughly christian christmas songs here :-)
Other than that I agree on her great talent.
