Actually, this script has been tested on Maya 2011 (PC) and works fine. I haven't had the opportunity to test the script on OSX, so maybe that is the issue. Email me directly if you would like me to send you a sample skeleton. jason baskin dot com is my URL
Hi Jason. I tried using your rigomatic thing with my model, along with the base skeleton you made, but when I type rigomatic an error happens. I only get the 'control scale' words under my model and an error that says 'The attribute 'sampleControllerLabelShape.overrideEnabled' is locked or connected and cannot be modified.' The panel for the rigging doesn't show up either. What could I be doing wrong?
Hi Jason. I'm a student and still have a lot to learn! Watching this video, do I attach the mesh to the rigomatic joints after I'm doing what you telling us in the video? Will I have to weight-paint after attaching the mesh to the joints if I use rogpmatic?
First of all, let me thank you for creating this script which will be very helpful to me as I really am not a rigger, only a modeller/texturer. I tried out your script this evening and noticed that the finger control controls all fingers uniformely ie the fingers do not have their own controls. Did I do something wrong, or does Rig-0-Matic not create controllers for each finger individually?
I suppose for creatures which are not biped / quadruped you can just use scripts like these in maya instead of going back and forth all the time though.
Realtime playback may be worse if you do not have a Quadro card though
It comes with quadruped skeletons as well for dogs or any 4 legged creatures. The rest can be done with a simple spline or chain, where MB will generate the controllers 4 u if you have the proper constraints. These types of animals may take a day or 2 of learning though, but its still quicker.
if your not doing facial animation its really just a matter of painting the weights thats the hardest part. Especially if your using a modified MB skeleton with proper bone naming and rotations already. After your mesh is binded to it you can literally take it in MB and generate a rig in 1 minute.
Facial animation will always have a learning curve though
DL motion builder u will love it. You can import one of the sample skeletons and translate all the bones to fit your needs perfectly because the rig is generated back in MB. The only thing that takes time is naming your bones properly but it literally takes less than 5 mins to get a full functional SWEET rig.
Then you can click one button to bake the animation to the skeleton to export a clean animated mesh.
Not saying this script is bad,but if you need more flexibility -> MB
Pure genius!!! I'm an animator so the faster I can get my rigg set up the faster I can get to work. You are freakn' genius!!!!!!!!!! Einstein tips his hat to you sir.
Great video! I love it when people make something for the community just to help out. Is there any way of getting a downloadable version of this video? I like to have tutorial videos on my local machine in case the video is no longer available online for some reason.
I used version 4.4 and everything seems to work but it did make a super mover and made a couple of controlers that are suppose to act like movers but only affect the head for some reason.
i dont seem to be able to make it work on maya 2008 too,... and please if u can link the file ".mel" to your website so ppl can be able to download it,it would be great, right now its just showing me the script and am copying the script from it.
I have a Mac with Maya 7.0.1 I seem to be having some problems with your rigged characters and those of other people.
I can open Bloke 1.2 but I can't open Blik, Blok, or Bloke 2.0 Every time I try to do this it says I am missing information. Also, when I actually CAN open up a character, the UI highlight body part things are all weird and don't work. Is there something I can do to stop the madness?!
Thanks so much, this will really help me out. I am an animation undergrad graduate. I'm trying to put together an effective reel. I model characters myself and animate them but I REALLY HATE rigging, so it's nice to know that i don't really have to anymore. I'm also using some of your characters, Blik, Blok, and Bloke, in my animation reel. Don't worry, I'll give you credit! Thank you!
i really wish i would b able 2 use this mel script.
would u b kind enough to offer me assistance as i am beginning to give up on learning how to rig a character.
i created the joints for the skeleton, using ur last tutorial on skeletons as a basis. weneva i rig something, it mirrors twice and theres two sets of rig joints.
heey jason... great thing you did here!!! very helpfull...
just one question from me... does it work in new 2008 version of maya? cuz i got problem running the script... says... //Error: Cannot find procedure "rigomatic".. (= anyways!! BIG up!! greets, fabio
Thanks for the comment. I haven't tested the Rig-o-matic yet on the Mac, but it does work fine on Maya 2008. Like most MEL scripts, though, this one needs to be sourced before you run it. The easiest way is usually to place it in your scripts directory before launching Maya.
For more information, please visit the link in the video description.
great! it worked.. i idiot forgot to relaunch maya! (= what a nobby mistake... sure it works fine in maya 2008 at mac platform. thanks again for your great work and the fast answer. keep it up. all the best.. fabio

This doesn't work in Maya 2011. Each rigging attempt brings up an error saying certain IK Joints are missing. Very frustrating.

So does everyone who uses motion builder. Its considered more of a rigging plugin FOR maya
