I though this was a perfect match of song and singer. This version is, in my opinion, much better than JD's. Sorry to all you JD fan but, this is areal cowboy version!
1st one that has done it right! You have the mandolin & guitar, a fiddle for fill-in, bass for "flavor" - just like we have at 3C Cowboy Fewllowship church in Salado TX. Actually we also have drums for rhythm. I play upright bass, and we are doing this song Sunday morning (12-27-09).
I love the yoddeling - don't think any of our guys can do it.
I've gotta say it: if I like a song, I will have more than one version sung by other performers. This guy is good. I like John Denver. He was good. Each song is good. Just different.
well I mean I didn't want to come across as a jerk to the guy, good to see this old song still loved, but it just doesn't compare to the John Denver version.
I am a life long fan of John Denver. I first saw him in concert in 1971 and many times afterward. That said I like Wyle's version better. For one thing is rings more true coming from a real cowboy. JD was a wannabe cowboy.
Toby has worked around livestock when he was young. Now Alan Jackson and dome of the others might be a different story. Wylie is the real thing though and those are probably HIS horses in the background as he runs a big horse ranch on the Palouse in Washington State.
Merry CHRISTmas and GOD bless!!!

Actually John Denver didn't write Christmas For Cowboys, it was written by his band mate and guitars Steve Weisberg.
