Wowbagger86: His name was Joe Kittinger. On August 16, 1960, he jumped from a high altitude balloon at 102,800 feet (over 19 miles high). He reached over 600 mph in the thin atmosphere.
Thanks! I did some research and found his name, but thanks for the details :) I remembered this from a documentary I saw many years ago... it impressed me, but I forgot who it was. Its amazing!
Are you serious? He was wearing a pressure suit. Oh no, he just jumped from a near-vacuum and still managed to breath (sarcasm).
Also, there is very little friction on the edge of space. The reason why meteors burn up is because they are colliding with gas particles and they are compressing the air in front of them. He was still in the stratosphere and only obtained 614 mph.
A man actually jumped from that hight with a parachute... It was a famous scientific exsperiment. I just don't remember his name...

Wouldn't he die? There would be very little oxygen, freezing and the friction would certainly burn him(?)

I think that was dust on the lens. The video camera wouldn't have enough latitude to show both a bright landscape and stars.
But it's still cool.

Wow that's pretty sweet!! You could see stars there for a second before being washed out by the sun.
