  • I only had a 10 gallon tank and no room for anything bigger so I just kept my BGK until I felt like he was beginning to get too big then found him a new home with the help of the people I got him from. I miss him but hope I will be able to have a larger tank one of these days and get another. They are so cool to watch!

  • for real i doubt it will get the full 19inches

they always say that about everything and 80% of the time they are qrong tha fish stays small not a baby but gets to 12-15inches if not less

and we post videos because we want to not to have people like that try to put us down they sound as they have nothing better to do than critisize people because they are jealouse if not doing way worse

  • Oh - And Ive had my Goldfish for Over 3-1/2 years, and hes as healthy as they come. He lives with Cichlids that have lived with him for over a Year.

Cichlids and Goldfish share a Happy Medium temperature of 75'f...All of my fish look and act extremely healthy and happy...

  • Should the turtle have something he can prop up on? To get him out of the water when he wants" Ive seen those turtles Resting on logs in lakes - looks like thats what he needs...

Also - just picked up a "Mastacembelus armatus" today..Poor guys scared as hell. I have nice fish though, hopfully he'll warm up to his home quickly..

Pretty tank BTW - very spacious.

  • plz guys tell me what the kind of this sands ..

  • You turtle could be an Olympic swimmer!

  • Nice :)

Has the turtle got somewhere to sit where he can breathe? Because it looks like he's trying to get some air.

Thats a lot of food :P

  • Ryanpretzel2311, like chieftx said the fishes outsides stop growing and the inside continues to grow. That's why it won't grow to 19 in. in a smaller tank. The people at your fish store seem more concerned about costing you money than they do about telling you the truth about the fish. In my opinion it would be a waste of money to buy a fish that will die if your tank is too small. Some fish cost $20-50 and thats a lot to flush down the toilet.

  • anyways just switch out the cylinder for something a bit more cave like and bigger and you'll be fine, but keep in mind if you dont soon your black ghost could die from stress (due to too much direct light exposure) or even from starvation. hope all goes well for you though ;)

  • i know how that is. try to find a tank setup that works for you will take a lot of time, iv had my for almost 6 years now and still havnt once been happy with it lol (bit of a perfectionist) - read next comment

  • that black ghost was really struggling to get out of that glass cylinder, now unlike the other talking about "oh it gets to 19" im going to cry waah!" - read next comment!

  • Why is your turtles head tucked in? is

    that normal?...

  • Awesome tank the whole set up is really cool :)!! I have two turtles with a tire track eel in a 55 gallon tank. I was wondering where did you get that BGK and is it a good fish?

  • Dude, I feel bad for that turtle. Turtles breathe air, he needs a place to sit or something. Have you wondered why he is constantly treading for his life at the top of the tank. Imagine being stuck in the ocean for the rest of your life, your safe and have plenty of food but you can never rest otherwise you will drown and die.

  • @loganis1337 He has a log to rest on.

  • nice tank and fish, I got an eel too and so tempted to get a ghost knife if it wasn't for few small fish in my tank.

I think the minimum tank size for a full grown BGK is 75g and turtle should have access to land like a floating log.

  • Who cares about a gold fish, they cost like 12 cents.

  • Nice set up how are the turtle eel and fish doing? I just bought an peacock eel yesterday

  • @emostars71 They're doing good together. I guess it's because my turtle doesn't eat fishes like normal turtle does. Actually my eel doesn't eat fishes either.

  • this tank is AWESOMEEEEE!!!

    =]

but arent u suppose to have rocks that reach up to the surface for the turtle...in case if he doesnt wanna swim all day all the time? (if anyone knows PLEASE answer because i want a turtle in my tank soon!)

  • @QueenDominiRican You can't see it but there is a log he rest on.

  • Seriously thats not a good idea to keep a turtle in with any land that means he's living in water 24/7 and you really need to get a bigger tank for all them fish you should do some resourch before you decide to stick fish in.

  • What do you have to do to make it grow that much? I just got one and the guy in the store told me he eats normal fish food, however...they are carnivore...Whats the best food for then?

  • Beautiful tank, its nice to see your bond with your pets!

  • YOU CAN PUT A TURTLE IN THERE??!

  • i read all your comments and i started my bgk in a 10 gallon tank and now he is 17 inches and 4 years old in my 55 gallon tank... nice tank cool fish...check out the vid of my bgk...5 stars from me

  • you have a beautiful large tank. i think the fishes in there would be not just fine but very happy to live in there.

  • You should feed them twice a day but it seems like your not having any problems so whatever. Very nice knife fish.

  • hey correct me if im wrong but i think ur eel is actually a tire track. BTW nice tank

  • @bverman123 Yes it's a tire track. You know your fishes =).

  • My advise would be get another bgk and watch how they come alive, moving a lot and hunting togather!

  • so does the turtle not eat that black fish?? cuz my turtle will eat anything that moves no matter how big. he will just rip them apart.

  • i had my bgk for 3 years and never got to big for my 55 g

  • Nice setup, although I'm surprised you were able to mix in your turtles with the fish! How is his attitude towards them?

  • @shiftykey They get along fine. My turtle loves chasing your finger but scared of anything else or just don't care. Lol.

  • nice tank with some cool fishes ! I have at home a Asian Shark Catfish I love that little bastard it eats everything and its active

  • u really dont have a clue

  • @ZombeeXTC and you do? LOL.

  • are you retarded your never supposed to put a fish and a turtle in the same tank obviosly they dont get along

  • @toysoilder846 wrong - depends on your turtle and no I'm not retarded. I started with cheap feeders to see how the turtle reacts and go from there. Some turtles eats fishes and some don't. You need to do more homework before making comments like that. Not everyone is the same including animals etc. For example some people are negative like you and good people are positive.

  • hey, does a zig zag eel nned small narrow caves like the snowflake freshwater eel (i know its not really an eel)? i am getting one and i want to know how to set up the tank :)

  • hahah. what the flipp isup with the turtle.

    that cracks me upp.

    :D cute fish!!

  • A better solution would be to have a turtle/goldfish tank and a separate tropical tank.

A> the goldfish will grow fast and produce too much waste at a high temp.

B> the turtle NEEDS a rock/log base to climp completely out of the water to regulate its body temperature correctly

So, if you separate them, and keep the BGK and spiny eel in a dimly lit covered tank with more hiding places they should fare well. And Yes, 55G is enough for a BGK to reach its potential 20inches.

  • @objectofdesire Good tip - Thanks.

  • does the turtle has access to a dry zone? cuz they need or they will perish in only water aquaria

  • what are u feeding them?

  • Oh wow you can feed an eel, don't you feel awesome.....NOT!

  • i ave the blsk ghost knife but ot bad i dies ...MISS IT !!! TOT

  • how did u get such a big zig zag?! that's fuckin HUUUUUUUGE! I've seen fire eels that big and bigger but not zig zags. Zig zags are TINY!

    WTF?!

  • turtle will eventually eat all your fish.

  • @giannizboy I'm still waiting for my turtle to eat anything alive.

  • most of them grow to about 20-25cm in an aquarium. I have kept 1 in a 2footer and it was around 30cm when i sold it to someone with a bigger tank :)

ps your turtle will eventually eat all your fish. my little penny turtle killed all my fish including bristlenose and an oscar 4x the size of the penny. Turtle will hunt at night when the fish are sleeping and it will eat their guts. Thats what it did to my fish :(

  • @giannizboy I've had my turtle for 10 years and has never ate anything alive.

  • VERY nice tank!

  • Yo, the turtle.. is gonna die.. turtles cant live in that deep of water... Also u need like a plantform for it to sun tan and stuff..

  • I can't help but notice. You have a plant in your tank that is not truly aquatic. The variegated plant is has the scientific name Draceana Sanderiana. It is actually a plant that grows in swamps.

  • what turtle is that because i thought you couldnt keep them with fish?

  • what turtle is that and dont u have to have a UV light

  • how big do they get?

  • does that turtle try to bite the other fish? my sisters is only 5 months old and it bites any other thing thats in there.

  • where did you get that see through tube for your BGK? you get it from a pet shop or something also are they expensive?

  • @ryanpretzel2311 There was a glass shop in my town. You can get them at ebay.

  • nice tank, that looks like tire track eel? if you dim lights in your tank the ghost knife will be active all day and night like mine is.

  • @Jcashrulez - I have blue dim led lights. I know what you mean =).

  • hey how long is ur tank? in feet

  • @cairnsghettonigz I'm not sure but it's your standard 55gal.

  • ignore that person cos i got like a really small BGK in a smaller tank n people at mi fish place said its fine just eventually u may need bigger tank if they grow 19'' but its unlikey, anyway nice tank!!

  • .....they grow to be 21" no matter how small the tank is...

  • They grow 3 feet in nature. They grow to the maximum size that your set-up allows them to.

You should keep it in a LONG tank but they generally find a place to hang out and stay there so I don't see the point of anything longer than 48"

Mine is in a 55G and LOVES his peice of wood ;)

Check my 55G tank prior to adding the BGK in my videos. He now resides in the wood on the right (2nd from the right) with the onions growing on it.

    He's funny

  • They don't grow to 19", it is 12-16"

  • unfortunately chieftx is right about the ultimate size of the fish. Lucky for you the BGKs grow very slowly, so it should be fine in there for a while. Now for the bad news. The tiretrack eel you have in there gets to be about three feet long, and mine got to be that size in only about a year and a half. so that really wont work since your tank is barely three feet long. Sorry for the bad news.

  • well thats great!

I acctually really wanted one for my 55 gallon but I heard about it on this very good fish forum you oughtta join us.

    on Badmanstropicalfish(dot)com.

they have some awesome info there and they will be glad to help ya out.

    glad to help out. :)

  • Oh this is bad.

first off: gold fish are cold water fish period! its insides will outgrow its skin in tropical temps.

second: a black ghost gets to 19 inches, and they will stunt and die in a tank that small.

  • The gold fish/ feeder fish are fishes my kids won in the fair, not worried about those. I'm sure the black ghost will be fine in my 55G. I doubt it will grow to 19" because of my tank size. Plus I feed them every other day.

You sound like you know a lot, why don't you trying giving advise instead of being so negative.

  • OK its understandable about the goldfish.

look sorry about this, but that thing that petstore employees tell you about how fish grow to your tank size is dreadfully false. the fact is that when you stop a fish from growing by keeping it in a small space, it will begin to grow sick, unhappy, and possibly violent. this is called stunting, it is infact painful. giving him a larger tank or rehomeing him would be the best option.

I hate to be negative but your the one hurting the fish.

  • Thanks for the reply. I'll research stunting, this is the first time I've heard of that term. Learning as I go. I can't get a bigger tank so I'll find him a new home when he gets bigger. I'll enjoy while I can.

  • thats the best thing u can do :) gud luck, they are very beautiful fish :)

  • oh and also its not "stunting" its "stunning" it's a condition which states that in small tanks, the growth of the fish to its actual size will be stopped or really slowed. this is a myth. it might slow the growth a little bit but they will grow to the adult size anyway

  • Actually stunting isn't a term. His growth WILL get stunted a little bit but I don't think that causes them to die. To my knowledge if an animal lives in a smaller or more crowded habitat he will grow slower. But if anything I imagine this would lengthen their lifespan since they'd eat less and metabolize slower (age slower).

I hope this isn't true because I keep my black ghost in a 55G. A lady I know at a petstore told me she had hers for years in a 55G tank and he only grew a couple inches

  • actually it wasnt that negative he was trying to tell you what would happen because the bgk gets so big and if he outgrows the tank it would eventually become stunted

  • Fish never stop growing. People think that a fish will grow to the tank size, they are wrong. I work as a marine biologist and bacteria slows the growth of fish in small tanks. The fish is still growing but not nearly as fast as it normally would in a larger tank.. It will be fine, 55 is plenty big for him.

  • @speedfanatics whats the difference between the average tiretrack and zigzag eel?

  • @finalman25 - They are the same eel. I guess different scientific names. Lol.

  • @speedfanatics i believe it might grow to be 19 inches but dont wrry abt it, a 55 is still fine for him :) btw, cant believe thts a 55, it looks huge :P

  • lol 19 inch bgk would be a monster, try 12 inch MAX and in a 55g thats fine

  • To say that they will outgrow their skin is one of the more idiotic things I have heard in my life.

Their SCALES will regrow and accommodate the body of the goldfish.

  • They don't get to 19" in captivity. They normally grow to 14" in captivity. I have a 3 year old black ghost in a 30gallon with a Gar, a Fire Mouth Cichlid, and a Placo(who is 5 years old).

  • @chieftx no, they're fine in heated tanks.
