My comment had nothing to do with how good he is, I just wanted to see video of him grooving in the pocket. A Bassist should not be judged on how good they solo. For what it's worth I am an excellent bassist but I won't say I'm better than he is.
Thank you. Remember Bass players don't spend much time soloing but it seems that when fans post videos it's often of solos. I prefer listening to in the pocket grooving with an occasional solo. My main influence was Jaco Pastorious but not his solos. It was his funky groove that impressed me most. Another big influence was James Jamerson but I never heard him take a solo.
Here's another good one with another good bass player.
Marco Panascia & Dario Deidda: Jazz Bass Duet
He grooves and solos here but much of his solo is in the pocket. Really good stuff. I think it takes a bass player to realize that playing in the pocket is often more difficult than soloing because of the necessity to keep perfect time. When soloing things can be freer, looser and consequently easier.
@theIonliestmonk; I was referring to another video here on Youtube titled "Marco Panascia & Dario Deidda: Jazz Bass Duet", not this one. Check it out! There are indeed 3 bassists in this video.
While I agree that the groove is important and basically the job of a bass player I think that for a bass player to be able to step out of that role into something more melody oriented is a great thing. I won't say that bass is just as great a lead instrument as trumpet or guitar but a bass player can be as melodic and as skillful as either when improvising. And thisguy exemplifies that.
I also agree. I also like to play melodically and also like to play guitar and horn like solos. I spend a lot of time learning this. My point is I don't want people to judge a bass player on their ability to solo because that is at most 5% of our playing. I appreciate and like to listen to what a bass player does when their grooving. That is where it;s at.
great but...he is a guitarist...

Grooving, pushing the rhythm, playing off the drummer. I'm sure he does it well but this is just a solo so I didn't get to hear him groove.

dear tbcass he's a great bassist, one of the best, i hope that you can play better than that... so you can say "he's good but...". Vai Dario!
