I think its probably one of the worst accidents in F1 that most of us have never seen, its frightening, the sheer speed, its such a shame there was no proper film of it, its very spectacular, amazing Jos was not badly hurt.
@Dannascarizod What bad English? I see kids with English as their first and only language that can barely form a sentence in the comment sections of youtube. You only forgot one word, no need to apologies.
This was the one crash that proved that the new safety rules in formula 1 really helped. Such a crash even a year before 1996 could have end up way more serious. Hakkinen 1995 - Adelaide, looks familiar to verstappens crash, Hakkinen was wounded, Jos could walk away from this. Not to mention 1994 ... Jos could have died here two years before 1996. Thank God that Jos Verstappenm was not hurted to much and could entertain us with more of his spectaculair driving skills for years ever since!
I remember watching the police camera action racing special you refer to about racing safety, and when they told the story of Imola 1994 I found myself becoming so agitated about senna's accident that I had to leave the room.
I saw him in Hockenheim in his F3 days, when he was leading, early in the race he made a mistake in the Opel Kurve and was getting back on the track at the back. He then plowed through the whole field of F3 cars.
Sadly he was never really able to show his talent in F1, but I enjoy seeing him in the Porsche RS Spyder nowadays.
He just had bad luck to get in that seat so quick, he was suposed to do a testing year and then driving untill the accident with Letho wich putted him in the seat. Many forget that Jos pretty much made the same step as Kimi did, only 2 years of openwheel racing and he got in F1. Jos had natural talent and speed, just not the experience yet and that ruined his career. But thats Jos, every change he gets he will take simple as that and thats why i like him. Even with the many mistakes he has made.
His rookie year, wasn't it? And being teamed up with Michael Schumacher isn't an easy task to any driver, especially when Michael demands first driver status
@thatguywiththecodes yeah but he was a rookie and had just the year before raced in F3 for the first time, so he wasn't completely ready for the task. For example Hamilton has been preparing for F1 ever since he was 10, Verstappen's F1 adventure was for him very surprising. He was a test driver until JJ Letho broke his neck.
He was in Benetton in 1994 when they have a very good car. They didn't re-sign him for 1995.
I agree he had a lot of talent, but he was just speed and very little "smart driving". Many says he lacked the wits to use his talent in a meaningful way.
@McLarenMercedes You ever saw him race in the rain?? Rain was his favourite!
Check his race in Canada year 2000 in his arrows. When the rain came, and pure car speed didn't matter, that's when Jos really showed himself. 1994 in the benetton was his first year. To little experience.
Yeah, I saw him pull off quite some spectacular drives with the Arrows in 2000. I rooted for him and Arrows, but sadly the team never really recovered and although showing great promise in the races, it almost never led to results.
I always hoped he would go to CART or IndyRacingLeague. In Formula 1 far too many talents don't get the chance their talents deserves.
It's from a Police, Camera, Action special aired in 2000 on ITV focusing on road safety in comparison with motorsport (it was a two-part special, first part focused on F1 whereas part two focused on the American series).
Featured interviews with quite a few drivers along with some rare footage (such as a full-speed version of Ratzenberger's crash, although the car spinning to a stop was understantably cut)
No offence guys, but Verstappen had a good chance in a world championship winning car in 1994, and didnt take full advantage. If he had done, Herbert would not have had a Benetton seat in 1995 and Verstappen would have won races. But he didnt and his career was in trouble from that point.
the Arrows F1 team was renamed Footwork from 1991 till early 1996 because of a 'sponsor' agreement. Although the official name was Footwork it is very much an Arrows F1. When the team was sold in march 1996 to TWR, it was officially renamed Arrows.
He is now having surgery on his neck, the cause was this accident, after this his phenonenal speed went a bit down (he showed great stuff in the SimTec and Footwork before the crash!, the Benneton wasn't build to his style of driving). He probably wouldn't had survived it if the new 1996-how-to-build-a-F1-car rules weren't applied. That ment higher cockpit edges so if you crash your head can't go very far away, like what happend with Ratzenberger.
I'm not sure you can put Jos' poor results all down to this. He had already been trounced at Benetton in 94 and didn't exactly shine in 95 (granted, he was in the Simtek, but Schiatterella should have been an easy one). This is a big enough crash to shake anyone up...but I think Jos was always "a standard driver" except for the occassional flashes of speed.
That's right.....Never officially recorded but one of the most serious crashes of that decade! If you ask me personally it is after this that Verstappen lost his devastating pace (comparisons to Senna were normal back then) and became a standard driver
Apparently Jos states this is his worst crash. I now see why! That's some serious deceleration there. I've waited 11 years to see this. I think this crash was never officially recorded. Knew someone, somewhere must have it on amateur recording. Now I see. Well done for posting it!

This indeed was one of the most terrifying f1-crashes in the second half of the nineties.
Although not as 'famous' as some crashes.
The crash had serious consequences regarding Jos' career in Formula 1.
He was absolutely not a 'new Senna' as some around here tend to claim.
But the crash did change him at least physically. Up until his very last year in F1, Verstappen had chronic neck problems.

not shined in the Simtek? he put that backmarking car up to sixth in the Argentina GP of 1995, then the gearbox exploded.
That was noticed by everyone in F1 back then, cause it was simply a stunning drive.
