her since they closed off the bridge were we got our big cats we just fish a wall and for redfish biger bait sometimes means bigger fish but not always. but ussually for me its smaller luers like rattle traps means big 28-32'' reds.
i see alot of arkansas vid with some big catfish but never ever herd or seen a yo yo watever. everyone else just uses the same old fishing pole with the hillbilly acsent sorry if i spelled that wrong and they always use either stink bait or little allmost micro scopic baits like perch
Yo yos aren't legal in TX. My experience is that you get mostly smaller cats on prepared baits like cheese, stink bait, etc. With cats, bigger bait means bigger fish. I can fill a boat with catfish 4 lbs and under with stink bait. If I'm going after large trophy sized cats, large cut bait or live bream around 5-6" in length is what you want. I use 3-4" live shiners - 3/4 of what I catch is between 5-8 lbs. Anything larger will trip the yo yos.
I apply the 80/20 rule to catfish. 80% of the cats in a lake are < 3 lbs. Another 15% are probably between 3 and 20 lbs with only some 5% over 20 lbs. Small bait may appeal to all catfish, but since there's so many more small fish, that's what your likely to catch. As bait size gets larger, you discourage a larger and larger % of the smaller fish, increasing your chances of catching larger fish. 2-3 pound cats don't spend a lot of time eating 6" bream. It's all about probability and odds!
Limb lines, especially on flexible limbs, work every bit as good as yo yos, yet have some advantages. There's a practical limit to size of bait or size of catch a yo yo will hold. You can build limb lines as heavy as you want. For 40+ lb cats, I use 400 lb test nylon, cushioned with a bungee chord, with a #12 circle hook baited with large, live bream.
@kk201airsoftnfishn Is this video in Arkansas. I live in Arkansas and the biggest cat i've ever caught or seen caught was about 6 lbs. From what i hear all the big catfish are in Oklahoma or on the Arkansas or Mississippi rivers which i don't live near.
@InKa4484 yes i do beleive so and all you need is a pond or ok lake to find the big ones just find rocks ledges structures you now that5 sort of thing or just find a really deep spot and drop a big bait with a big weight and keep tryin these spots over and over untill you find them or just set a trotline or jugline with good palm size or a little smaller size perch or talapia you can use shad but i never really had much luck with it
@cjleger337 Shoot man, I was just catchin' bait in this video. lol Have you seen that new series on the History Channel called "Swamp People?" It's sort of a reality show about guys in south LA who hunt alligators using heavy limb lines. It's way cool!!! Wish I lived down there. Also, if you've never read it, check out a book called "Atchafalaya Houseboat." It's a great read about life in the swamp.
@ttenni yeah I wasnt talking to you though! I was talking to InKa4484, but the Landry's on Swamp people(Pierre Part,LA), I know actually, they buy their crawfish from a friend of mine. No need to read about the life, I live it! If you ever get a chance to go gator hunting, its awsome! Lezzez les bon temps rouler, cher!
what state do you live in were i live in Texas all i can catch is little blues and chanel cats from about 8 to .10 pounds except my dad he used to be able to find the 20 pound blues until they bloked off that area of the lake so now its really hard to find those big ones. Chack out one of my vids and you can see a cat that is about the size of the ones that you were catching.
Anybody can check out my video titled "Yo Yo Fishing - Part 1 (What's a fishing yo yo?)" for an explanation of what fishing yo yos are. Fishyman, I'm sending you the video link in a Youtube email. While common in the South, there are some states in the country where people have never heard of these nifty devices. CAUTION!!! THEY ARE NOT LEGAL IN ALL STATES. IF YOU'VE NEVER SEEN OR HEARD ABOUT THEM IN YOUR NECK OF THE WOODS, IT MAY BE BECAUSE THEY'RE ILLEGAL!!! Know your regs!!!
hay pal i love the video fish ole cane creek sumtimes im from grapevine so its not that far from me have good luck there sumtimes thanks for the vid pal good job and good luck !!!
I mounted four wood strips just inside the bucket with a bunch of screw eyes. I hang the yo yos by their hooks on the screw eyes. It works great at keeping things untangled, so long as you take them out of the bucket in the reverse order than you hang them.
Take 425 south out of Pine Bluff about 15-20 minutes until you hit Star City. Just as you're leaving town headed south, turn left on Cane Creek Road. There's a brown state park sign. Go about 4 miles and the park/lake will be on your left.
Basically shallow water near the bank, from docks, boat ramps, etc. You want to find a spot that has a smooth bottom - no stumps, big rocks, etc. for the net to snag on. I like to hit a few ponds near where I live several days in advance of a fishing trip and store the bait in a 150 gallon stock tank. That way, I can make sure I have enough bait. I hate to waste part of my day at the lake trying to catch bait!
I buy a lot of my bait (typically large golden shiners), but I've started using a cast net a lot recently to save money. I mostly catch shad and bream, along with some wild shiners. Bream over four inches are only legal as bait if pole-caught in AR. I've only experimented with a bait trap a time or two. You can use about anything for bait so I'm told - canned cat food, dry dog food, bread, etc.. Bream are the only thing I've ever caught with a bait trap, along with an occasional crawfish.
You can buy wire traps special for crawfish (search for with google). I don't care anything about trapping crawfish, as I don't use them for bait. Maybe you should trap some and make a video.
Most people seem to set their bait traps in shallow water near the bank. I've also seen a people drop one below their boat stall at marinas or around boat docks. I suppose the mouths of creeks would probably be good spots.
I like to hang my yo yos just before sunset, then run them around midnight, then again at dawn. If you're a glutton for punishment, you can can run them more often.
Flatbottom should work fine. There are lots of stumps, especially when the water is down. There are boat lanes, but they're poorly marked.
I use a bucket to store my yo yos in. I hang the hooks on the edge and let the reels hang inside the bucket.. If you throw them in a box, they just get all tangled up.
ive been having trouble finding a place to keep and store my yo yo's when fishing do you have any advice, what do you keep yours in? Ive been wanting to go fishing in cane creek lake is it alright to put a flatbottom boat in?
My two favorite situations are cypress trees scattered through a swampy slough or any sort of tree branches hanging over the water along a small riverbank. Sometimes in a shallow lake formed by a dam, youll have cypress standing in the middle of the lake along the original creek bed that formed the lake. That provides limbs plus underwater structure. Pick springy limbs, rather than rigid ones, as youll have fewer straightened hooks.
3" live golden shiners - anything larger, like goldfish, will tend to trip your yo yos. If you use limb lines, you can go with larger live bait without that problem. With catfish, larger bait = larger fish. Another plus with using live minnows over something like dough bait or liver, I also catch a lot of crappie in cooler weather, along with an occasional bass now and then.
I seem to catch a lot more smaller cats in the 1-3 lb range when I use dough bait. A cast nets is a great way to catch your own live bait (shad, bream, shiners, etc.) and save some money over store-bought bait.
Another tip, you can chum each yo yo or limb line position with a scoop or two of sweet feed. It's an animal feed (grain treated with molasses) sold in 50 lb bags at feed stores. Catfish think the stuff is candy! Some people chum with soured grain like corn, milo, or wheat, etc. That's a lot more trouble and the stuff reeks - you'll smell it in your vehicle two weeks after you go fishing.
Sweet feed actually smells good, can be used right out of the bag, and seems to work just as good as soured grains. Keep it dry and it pretty much lasts forever. I put mine in 5-gallon buckets with snap-on lids, which keep it nice and dry in the boat and keeps mice out of it back at home in the garage.
Its surprising how seldom you see these used anymore. I've got a few and they're a hoot to set along the bank while doing overnight camping. I also hook one of those little bells to the limb so you know when they show up. Its also pretty cool that the yo yo reels only cost around $3.00 apiece, so you can have a bunch with a minimal investment. Nice video!
Over the past year I've started using limb lines about as much as yo yos. You can make up a bunch of limb lines for virtually no investment/cost. Just be sure you use a good "springy" limb so the fish won't straighten the hook. In my state, limb lines can be left out around the clock while yo yos can only be left unattended from dusk to dawn. Sometimes it's nice not to have to get up at 5:00 AM and pick up yo yos. I still say yo yos are more fun.
thats going too be some good eating!!!!!!!!!

Arkansas allows you to have 30 yo yos out unattended from dusk till dawn. During the day, you must be in eye/earshot of your yo yos.

how many yo yos do you set out?

Daily limit for channels, blues, and flatheads combined in AR is 10. Possession limit is twice daily limit. No daily limit on bullheads.

Don't know about Tractor Supply. Look in yellow pages under "Farm Supplies" and "Feed Dealers" and you're bound to find somebody that carries it.
You can usually catch all sorts of small bait fish around boat docks, boat ramps, etc.
