  • What a great series! I was concerned at the part where the had the wood stove going and that blue polyurethane sprayed in insulation exposed. Isn't that not only very flammable, but extremely toxic when burned?

  • put up some more gatheringdevicesstart selling back to the power companylol. i love this idea of yours you should spread the word les. start a comunity there this is the future id sighn up no questions.

  • EXCELLENT! WELL DONE LES.

  • aahhhh. :D this is what I want to do in my lifetime. :]

  • I wonder if the kids went with the wife after they got divorced?

  • AburKadabur, I'm pretty sure that the house is lit up to demonstrate that he's got all the power he needs. He's not being wasteful -- the sun and wind will recharge the batteries. With everything he's been through building this place, I'm pretty sure he has very few bad habits, environmentally speaking.

  • i really really like less stroud the way he lives..and the way he enjoy his son and daugther .. he is a nature lover.. god bless you less stroud

  • Yeah Stroud has lots of cash. His offgrid is the rolls royce version. I'm sure the average joe could do a "toyota"version of this with proper seasonal planning and a lot less cash.

At least Stroud is holding the torch for off grid.

Here in South Africa we're facing a water crisis and already have an energy crisis.

  • wow you must have unlimited resources of cash and friends to pull this off. could any one short of a millionaire or more afford to have a hellicopter bring building materials in the winter to a remote location in bad weather. i love the dream but let's get real. And who has a wife that would back you up on this unless you had unlimited money to make this happen. great story well told .all the well for you . wish i could afford to do the same. stuck where they want me till i die .thank you Dale

  • @111Buckethead

funny how we all have self-imposed limits. I would like to stay out of that mindset. You're assuming this guy has money, he did say that he couldn't afford to drill through the bedrock for water $10,000, that says to me he's no millionaire. He did have a wife that supported him, so it's not impossible, except maybe for you.

  • @fire4ashz i dont know who wrote that lol sorry man iv never even watched this video before lol

  • I think it's hilarious how the final shot showed that even an environmentally conscious family can still entertain bad habits. There they were sitting outside by the fire while inside the entire house wss lit up with electricity!

  • This project took a ton of moola but he could have been like the rest of us and spent that money on trips to Hawaii and expense SUV's. It's a choice we all have. We should all start thinking about this and showing our kids how they may have to live in the future.

  • This documentary was absolutely amazing. I have always been an avid fan of "Survivorman" and this series of videos has been a just as great of a learning experience as Les' shows.

I'll be sure to buy Les Stroud a drink if I ever meet him. He is truly a tribute to the human race.

  • Far oot! What an inspiration, ay!! My dream to do similar, just looking for source of funding, first.

  • What about an AirConditioner gotta have A. C.

  • Good thing the Discovery channel was paying the bills for Les Stroud cause this little project was expensive and the average person could never afford this Jesus I mean with all he has invested in this he should have stayed on the GRID and payed his HYDRO. Lol what a retard

  • @mythic89 You're missing the point. You're the retarded one.

  • @mythic89 You're missing the point. You're the retarded one.

  • fukken awesome

  • This was an experiment not a how-to.

Do what you can; it costs nothing to recycle.

We all have different means but the ideal should be the same.

  • One thing this movie failed to tell us, is how much money it cost to do all this.

    I bet it isn't cheap.

  • What are you doing for food? You need some chickens, they are the best for entertainment, pets, and eggs. Very easy to take care of. Ill be looking forward to seeing some videos on growing and harvesting your own food in the future ;)

  • Don't forget you could always plant stuff. Especially a good option if you plan to live as a vegetarian/vegan, or if you just love plants.

  • great to place to live off the grid , instead of bothering sand people in Iraq and reskig your life in afghanistan and working your ass out for the NWO

  • wow are power outages really t hat common 2 make people wanna move 2 the wild...you wouldn b able 2 live like that without people livin normally in cities workin in factories 2 make crap like furnaces, windows, skis,

    ....helicopters lolll

  • @YamahaPhyscho yeah power outages are very bad here

  • i feel sorry for logan. you really need a brother to hang with when you live out in the woods. girls suck ass when it comes to outdoor living. she is probably more interested in dance class anyways.

  • @projectdurden As a female, camp goin' skiin' canooin' horseback ridin' huntin' Marine in the reserve, I resent that stereotypical remark.

I do dance and wear high heels on occasion, but I still prefer the country lifestyle and walking around barefoot.

  • I was told that his wife left him, if so I feel sorry for him.

  • I bought an rv and moved to Florida.

I get my hot water for free through garden hoses laid out in the sun.

My next project is to go solar and get off the grid.

  • I want to do this so bad Im reserching it now any tips on where to look would be helpful

  • that was amazing! it is my dream to one day be able to do just that. maybe not in canada

  • Man the resell value of this house is going to be tenfold

  • There is no season 3 of survivorman

  • You want off the grid? Search Dick Proenneke Alone in The Wilderness, or Braving Alaska. But I don't think Braving Alaska can be found on Youtube though.

  • One, they are not that far away from civilization, and especially a HIGHWAY. Two, they are RICH. I mean, come on, who has the funds ON HAND to buy 150 acres of undeveloped land and then develop it. I've lived away from the city, and it's not nearly as scary as one makes it out. Although, I'd really hate to give up my Quik Trip. LOL

  • I know you are right. I would love to do this but the common man don't have their kind of bank roll. They may not be billionares but the average person like me could never afford this..

  • dont forget the werewovles they play havoc in off the grid living

  • and when your kids grow up, what you gonna do with them, if they want to know other people,

  • ok this is a really good idea, but what happen if you get sick, or some snake bite your kid, or some one of your family broke an arm?, is a really good idea, but you have to think in the other stuff

  • they are only like a couple hours from civilization lol

  • then they die.... or you repair the arm.. like they did in the old day you silly ;)

  • Good film, but I have a few questions.

What are your kids gonna do when they wanna start socializing with others? Surely that's gonna hurt them and cause problems later on in life without that interaction.

What about emergency problems? No nearby hospital.

Meh, w/e. For anyone to pull this off you have to have the money to invest into this. The majority of us don't have a T.V. show to fund our dreams, but thanks for showing us its possible with money. Lol jk.

  • this was pre-survivorman, iirc

  • no, this is in between Season 2 & 3 of Survivorman

  • lovely film . thank you.

  • I'd love an update and see how things are going a couple years into it, especially about how the kids have adjusted.

  • Just put a windmill up in your garden and throw solarpanels on your roof, dont give a shit.

  • This would be totally awesome. It seems it would be really expensive tho, I wonder if you could work the wind/solar power into a mortgage?

  • What if EVERYONE decided to leave the cities and "live off the grid"? Where would they go? I get the impression many people that live in urban areas think that the vast open lands aren't owned by anyone, as if the land is free for the taking. I know they bought their property, but if everyone did what they did they wouldn't be isolated and would have neighbors contaminating their water etc. Nice idea for a few but not for the masses

  • Wow amazing Idea living in the wilderness . NO BILLS

But keep an eye around you , ReMEmber Those forests hide many creepy things that you dont wanna know . Big foot isn`t to be happy to share his territory . what about the grizzly, wolve.

  • These ppl are nutz had neighbors like that growing up. they were the good earth folks kids couldn't have candy no food had to be natural. Their kids would come over to my house and mash down cup cakes with 1 inch icing like it was crack and down it with kool aid with lots of sugar it was funny as hell

  • I agree with you on that part, it's simply not possible for all people to go back to the old ways of how it used to be.

I'd never starve kids of sugar and candy and all that good stuff.

But if we could all have homes like that, that'd be amazing, even if it was still in the city.

  • Hahaha!

  • awesome. I just watched the whole thing, thanks for posting this.

My family had solar power in the 80's. I think they charged their way into debt with cars, electronics, and simply spending money they don't have. But, we had solar and I didn't even know it when I was a kid. Now I have my own family and we're renting. When it's time to buy, we're definitely going solar/wind. Maybe move to the mountains (although, I've met some freaky mountain people... different story though)

  • I think I'm a bright guy, but installing solar power seems a little over my head. I could do it for smaller applications, such wiring a work shed or something, but wiring a whole house for solar is expensive and pretty technical.

I need to get a job in the energy business.

  • OK, the idea is all well and good, but what did it cost in total for Les to get this set up? Solar systems are not inexpensive, he brought in alot of fancy equipment, he even had a helicopter deliver 12 loads to the site. So, while Les keeps harping on the fact that he won't have a "hydro bill" any longer, just what other bills does he have to pay off for the construction, solar panels, etc.?

  • your thinking of it wrong. yes building this nice house with solar electricity and a cabin is very expensive. but think of how much they will be saving every year. in a few years they will have made up for there move and build by not paying electricy and water bills and bills i dont even know about. think like a hustla.

  • That's true -- but just think about it... they had to have a HELICOPTER fly in the materials for their cabin. For the average person not on a TV show and with many friends in the building sector, this project would still be incredibly expensive... and would take a LOT of time to pay off!

  • Oh, of course it's expensive. That was the one thing Stroud was saying, constantly throughout the whole documentary. This isn't something you just do, it takes careful planning. Probably best tto do once you have your life going, you have money saved up and you have a house in the burbs to sell to pay off all the construction bills.

  • expensive, true. Though it's not about paying itself off. We continue to consume oil because it's "cheaper" or "economically viable". Won't be that way forever :( Or...... we can start making the expensive change and have oil for many more generations. :)

  • they are building quickly. this a long project done over a short amount of time to show us that , yes it can be done and the average family can do this. you dont need to make a boat load of money , but it helps

  • This is great but I too live mostly off grid here in the United States. I harvest rain water, have solar power, solar thermal, wind power generation and grow most of my own vegetables. And I live inside a small village. I watched your video with most interest. Very good Job.

  • How much did it cost you?

  • the point was never to give up the conveniences of modern life, he says that right from the beginning. the point was to allow themselves to live comfortably while still being self sufficient.

  • What an awesome thing to be able to do in this life. I wish I had the money and the time. What a wonderfull piece of property they have. His hard work paid off in his dream becoming real.

Now get to work we want more survivorman....

  • This man is a hero of mine, and I aspire to reach this goal one day. Thank you very much for posting this. :)

  • If any other celeb did this they'd be rubbin it in all of hollywoods noses, and yet he doesnt he doesnt even mention it on interviews. Thats why he is good,he is modest, humble, and he does not have an inflated head.

  • Is he still living there?

  • A fantastic video!

In 1970, my parents moved me to Northern New England, to live in a cabin and live similar to this. New technologies have made it much more doable and comfortable, and this video shows me that its time to take another look at solar and wind alternatives! Well done Les, thanks so much, and thanks to the folks for posting this episode!

  • vandwelleruk....Thank you for posting this.

  • "from pot farm to paradise" i grew up alot like this we did have regular electric but we lived on what we grew in the gardens and picked in the woods/fields & what we shot & raised ie chickens , pigs , ect. my mom canned all kinds of stuff & made things like home made bread , cider , cheese , butter , even peanut butter & ketchup ect. we only got stuff like flour , sugar from the store i loved it and would do it now in a heartbeat but i have health problems and cant but i do as much as i can

  • this is an AMAZING dream to aspire to

the whole fam is quite wonderful to

  • great vids thanks for posting them

  • nature is my thing so i guess he is living my dream dam it les your so lucky great video's

  • Les Struod is the definition of badass!

  • If I never get to do this at least I know some of my lucky brothers and sisters are doing it. Bless you all.

  • I have so much respect for Les, his family and their ethics... they aren't arrogant in anyway about there views and, along with that, they aren't environmental radicles either. They did a great job showing how a normal family, who loves the city as much as the great outdoors, can live without all the extra "necessities" we chase after in society.

  • That'd be such a wicked house to have. Looks extremely laid back.

  • great idea ! i didnt know this came out..but for the idea i had this idea for quite some time myself but needs alot of money do start it off im im just young with not a whole lot of money :P but for the ppl that are fortunate enough to do so im very happy for you!

  • les is awesome. his daughter's got a sweet name too. awesome house. nature rules.

  • Les is the man

  • if they're lucky...

  • should have used the florescent bulbs to save electricity.

  • You should have watched the show. He said he used LED bulbs. They use up less than a third the energy of a CFL bulb (compact florescent). Its like 4 watts for the same light as a 15 watt CFL uses, or a 60 watt light bulb. LED bulbs are still expensive... like $40 USD each, but last much much longer than a CFL, which usually breaks before its lifespan becuase it cant handle the on off on off usage. CFL bulbs are also dangerous to your health becuase of the mercury in them.

  • He had something that most people go their entire life not having. Inspiration. He had the idea and ran with it.Perseverance, when he ran into problems he didn't quit, like so many people do.Utilization,he used what was available to accomplish his goal.If any of you find those characteristics despicable then you have none of those qualities and your opinion is purely arbitrary. If you had a goal you wouldn't hate those that do.

  • as Edison said- Genius is 1% inspiration, and 99% perspiration

  • I watched all the series here on youtube and all I have to say is this LES SHROUD ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i like the show .. but it just seemed that to be off "the grid" they neededmost of "the grid" to make it all happen...

  • this was AWESOME!!! i wanna do that, i love les stroud hes one of my heroes

  • this is cool. I`m thinking to do this myself of I gonna live on myself. I think you would create a environment where you really can relax.

    Good Luck!

  • I agree with MrAgmoore. I LOVED "Alone in the Wilderness." I mean, it was amazing that he did EVERYTHING himself. Les and his wife did that. But he was trying to do two things...he was trying to live sustainably while providing modern comforts for his children who are accustomed them. It is reasonable to bring these amenities with them because he wants his kids to accept the lifestyle. It would be unfair to make them live like fur traders.

  • you got that right! thats the life!

  • I'm a big fan of Survivorman but I found this documentary dissapointing. It just consisted of the monumental screwups involved with building in Winter. What was the point of hiring builders to build the second cabin? Richard Proenneke's "Alone in the Wilderness" was more inspiring.

  • It was more inspiring but Proenneke did that a LONG time ago, Stroud pulls this off with a wife and kids in todays age. I think they are both awseome in totally different ways. I'm suprised Proenneke didn't go totally batshit crazy, I think I would. Something like this seems alot more do able.

  • les...ur a badass! i'd do what you just did in a heartbeat! no questions asked

  • that's the life

  • wow you are really brainwashed AND stupid.

  • don't you think your being ignorant yourself. it takes all kinds! obviously you just don't get it, i kinda feel sorry for people like you

  • maybe working 50 hours a week in an office, paying nearly all of your paycheck to pay for material items and basic things the modern world makes us believe we need such as power,tv,internet, phones. Never truly understanding the reason we were put here is being stupid.

While modern technology is great and theirs nothing wrong with it. It should not be humans main concern in life to just have material objects.

  • wtf is the matter with you?

  • awesome
