Hello Drobo. Goodbye data. Seriously dude, why are you locking yourself into a completely proprietary storage OS? If you are using all identical drives, you'd be way better off using a Linux based NAS with a plain vanilla Raid 5 or Raid 6 disk array. Have you read some of the 1 and 2 star reviews about Drobo on Amazon? Scary stuff. I just hope you have a secondary backup for when the Drobo goes bang.

Hey Jared my understanding of the drobo is that it is already a redundant storage system and that you do not need to split your 10 tb in two, beacuse if a drive goes bad you just pop out the bad drive replace it and the drobo does its magic and you lose nothing. is this the case or am I way off the mark?

Backup storage is one reason I bought the Mac Pro. Its got 4 bays for HDDs. Although it was $2300 its well worth the money. I dont think you'll get the speed and efficiency of internal HDDs with the Drobo. I think I have two 1TBs but still have two bays empty and all you do is pop off the side of the computer and slide them in. No wires..lol.

Drobos are nice, as long as your initial backup is minimal. They're slow as fuck! My initial backup was 1.5TB and took more than 2 days to upload to the Drobo and I lost 1 hard drive in the process (so I guess I should be thankful because the lengthy initial backup weeded out the weakest link of the array). Since then, it has held its own for a year, but I wish I had went with a Qnap. Just in case, I also upload off-site to CrashPlan.

@ragnarocking I transfered 1.5tb in 17 hours to it on fire wire. Wish I had usb 3 or esata on the mac but thats fine once its transferred its going to be on there for good.

RAID 5 will work just fine, RAID 1 works only with 2,4,6, ect drives

@setosail use the fastest lenses and shoot RAW make sure your shutter speed is in the right place to freeze motion.

Also curious on the acoustics seeing that it doesnt have a network connection so you have to have it at your work station. Or are network connections not relevant with such devices?
