I have live in the St. Louis area and am not afraid.  I walk through the streets of downtown on my way back from Cardinals games by myself all the time. The downtown area and forest park areas are fine. Just stay away from east St. louis and parts away from the city. Like every city, we have our good parts and our bad parts, but there is a TON of free and fun things to do here.

St.louis is a cool state for the most part. Avoid the north like a plague, if you have a gun, make sure your clip/magazine/drum is full, and CARRY IT WITH YOU at all times.

DO NOT walk around late at night. Don't LOOK like a tourist. If you can make it in st.louis, you can make it anywhere. But sadly, most people who live over north, and a few other areas of st.louis only make it to the morgue..

I also suggest visiting the Anheuser Busch Brewery, take a tour. Some cool thing in there for kids too. As for eats.. well, I really have to suggest two places: Rich and Charlies, and The Pasta House. STL Is GREAT for fams on a budget.. oh yeah, the Six Flags here is great too!!

We live in south city and love it. So much to do down here, beautiful parks (Tower Grove, Carondelet, not to mention Forest Park is only minutes away), restaurants, bars, and a great mix of people. I would definitely recommend checking out the Cherokee St. area and its great shops like Apop Records, Binge 'n Purge, as well as all of the cheap, authentic Mexican eateries.
