  • Loved this one, only just found it dont know how Ive missed it before when looking. Loved the colours in the f/g typically up to your usual standard - amazing.

  • @LeonaFraser1 I did this one a while back. Thanks as always for your support.

  • Wonderful 3 part demonstration. Really enjoyed your use of the hake and credit cards.

  • @PoliticalPars I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching and best of luck.

  • oh my days, amazing, how did u do the 'YACHT thing? i see the credit card forms the shape ! but did u use white on the brush? or an eraser or something !!! it was like MAGIC !! WOW :-o ( im a beginner ) thanks

  • @Sassybaby1 the brush was just very lightly damp and removes the paint when you stroke over it, effectively like an eraser. Thanks for watching and happy painting!

  • Thanks for your response...the brush handle appears to be short and wider than most, an ideal brush type for persons I work with in rehab...who can't yet grasp to hold the narrower brushes...if you could tell me the brand or manufacturers name I would very much appreciate the info.

  • @TheMaineMariner hi, the brush is a system 3 Daler Rowney ¾ inch flat brush that I bought from HobbyCraft. I hope this helps. Best Regards.

  • Excellent....what is the name of the yellow, black bottom brush you use for painting the white sails? Thanks so much!

  • @TheMaineMariner That brush is a ¾” flat, though pretty much anything would do the job for the sails. The brush needs to be only slightly damp, just enough to remove the paint from the paper. Thanks for watching.

  • boss ... good one.

  • @shirsathsushil thanks for watching

  • Thanks chihuo1

  • I like you style of painting. What is the big wooden handle brush you use?

    Thanks.

  • The brush is a large Ron Ranson hake. Thanks for watching.

  • Thanks so much for explaining along the way. You have a great talent!! I was wondering how you achieved the misty rainy look on the mountains. Did the sky washes just flow down over the mountains on there own, or did you intervene in some way. Thanks....Todd

  • Thanks for watching Todd. The 7 colours I use for watercolours are Ultramarine Blue, Lemon Yellow, Paynes Gray, Alizarin Crimson, Raw Sienna, Burnt Umber and Light Red. To create the misty mountains, all you need do is wait until the sky is about half dry and then put your mountains in. As the 2 elements blend together they create the misty look. Hope this helps. Best of luck with your painting. Regards, Steven.

  • Steven, excellent tutorial and painting, Thank you for showing it to us all.

  • Thanks for watching.

  • i am hakim from morocco i love you way of panting i am your student i hope i will bee a good aquarelliste as you are .thank you steven

  • Thank you Hakim and keep painting!

  • Excellent video, very nice painting. I like your technique, the comments from 356star baffle me, as many many of the videos on here and of the artists I have met have stated, that a great deal of their spectacular effects in their paintings are just from "happy accidents" it is the end result that counts surely.

  • Thanks for your comments. I totally agree with everything you say. If the finished painting looks good then what does it matter how you got there? I'm for keeping things as simple as possible. Take care. Regards, Steven.

  • I can say this is great painting, but I can't say the same for you...

You should not let the colour set abroach like that, because all the result you get, it happening by accident. The true skill is to control all of your colours and to do (but before everything, to know), exactly what you want. And what's that motive? Try something harder and more impressive.

Take a look at Alex Ross' work, here, on youtube. You'll see what I mean.

  • Personally, I think I was in control of my colours and the end painting was pretty much exactly what I wanted. I also think many things in watercolour happen by accident and people should just take advantage of it.

Alex Ross is undoubtedly a very talented artist though Id hazard a guess hes been doing it a lot longer than the 3 years I have. Maybe when I have more experience youll find my work as impressive. Regards, Steven.

  • Thank you so much for shooting the entire progress, I turly appreciate it. It's much easier for me to grab it, THANKS AGAIN!

  • Thanks for watching.

  • thanks. this helped me a lot. good job!!:)

  • Keep practising!

  • That was pretty amazing watching you do this painting from scratch, I;m going to try out your hill techniques and the sail one.

Really good thanks, Im going to add you to my favs so I can take some more lessons from you, thanks !!

  • Thanks for watching.

  • nice technique for tha sails not bad overall image i think mayb tha foreground could do with a little more work

  • I think you're right about the foreground. It's so easy to overdo it, I think sometimes I tend to finish a painting early rather than risk overworking. Thanks for watching.

  • even though i have a lot of question in my mind. i guess i could do this now.. im very hesitant in doing paintings before but i've learned pretty much with this video.

hey!thanks so much for posting this vid you've helped a lot of people you know. because it's really fun watching it too. hekhek i want to have my own video of paintings too! and someday i'll put my paintings on the museum! haha!!

thanks a lot for a great help watercolourworkshop!?hehe watched most of your vids here :)

  • Thanks for watching. Keep practising!

  • Real fun workshop. Tried the painting and it came out great. Thanks for the demo. Keep them coming!

  • You see, you don't know what you're capable of until you give it a go. Keep painting!

  • Thanks! One of the things I like about this is your use of basic paint pigments such as most beginners would use, nothing exotic or hard to find. Also, I like that you have filmed it in real time, not speeded up or with big gaps missing. Makes me feel I could actually do this! Christine

  • Believe me Christine, with a bit of practise, anyone could do this. Have a go!

  • Hi, I know Ron Ransomes work well and you give a very creditable demonstration here. In fact Ron gave a demo at my local art group a few years ago. Thanks for the demo, will be spending some time looking back over your other videos - John

  • Thanks John. Wish I could have been there when Ron turned up. Never mind. I almost booked on one of his courses when he was in Ireland last summer but I couldn't afford it. Keep painting!

  • great demo u make it look so easy

    Thanks !

  • Cheers

  • superb ........enough said , i hav'nt tried to copy yet but no doubt it will look nothing like i'm sure

  • Keep practising!

  • absolutely brill! youve proved you dont need £100's of equipment. Just a hake and an old kebab box. Great man!!

  • Just keeping it simple!

  • Sail Away is one of the best demos yet ..... I am having a go .. and I have now learnt lots of useful stuff from this video...

The colours to use, brushes, how to use them and the time taken...I now realise that I have been pratting around... too fussy

    Thanks

Was this painting of an actual scene..

    Thanks again John

  • Hi John

I've got to be honest. This picture I copied from a Ron Ranson book. If you're passionate about learning watercolours then I can't recommend enough getting hold of a Ron Ranson video and learning from the master himself. The fast and loose technique he teaches is an inspiration to myself and countless others.
