If I wanted 3 to 5 pet store kois, how large does the pond have to be if I can't have a filter? It would have plants to help oxygenate and clean the water, and where we would have them would rain plenty.

You can not have Koi without a filter. Plants does not oxygenate or clean the water sufficiently- it is a fallace. Don't even go there. Do it correctly from the beginning or it will cost you dearly. Build as proper pond with proper filtration and you will have lots of fun with you Koiu. Good luck.

@KnollDark Yes a waterfall can sufficienly oxygenate a pond but the design of the waterfall must have the correct flow rate and size in relation to size of the pond. The bigger and higher flow rate the better. A filter and a waterfall can almost not be too big.

The pond is eight feet deep with steep edges, so herons can't walk in.  We don't really have any other predators in the area though...
