Clothespins are a great idea, and I see someone already suggested making them captive. The area where I shoot usually has long grass, so I'll skip the base and instead add a lower cross tube with Ts and drive a couple of steel rods into the ground that the vertical tubes can slip onto. I'll use electric fence wire, which is cheap and can be twisted together. BTW, for PVC projects, they make a "cross" (a T with 4 holes) that can come in handy. Not a common fitting, but can be found. Thanks!
Good idea. . Amazing what you can do with PVC and an idea. I made an alignment jig for my mercedes the other day out of 1 inch schd 80 pvc to check toe with. Works perfect and found my car had 1/4 positive toe.
Just for a bit more versatility, you can add a T at the top center to mount a metal switchplate cover onto another piece of pipe (make it removable). And drill more holes down the sides. I might suggest ditching the tape and use 2 eyebolts at top and bottom to adjust for different target sizes like the B-27. Great idea about running the wire through the clothespin springs. I'm still wondering though, what'll happen to the PVC if it's hit?
hey i was thinking of maybe making that but before i do i wanted to know if u think it would be sturdy enough to hang some steal plates from the cables or even from the top i might have to put one of those connectors through either the side to make a style or one in the middle for a mullion but i just thought i would c what u thought if it might not be strong enough to hold the steal plates
@usmc158 Depends on how large and heavy the plates are. I'm going to put together one tomorrow according to sootch's dimensions (I'm using 3/4" diameter PVC, not sure of sootch's but it looks like 1/2" dia.). I think 3/4" or 1" dia. would be sufficient for a single steel 6" plate but of course you'd want larger PVC diameters for additional plates. Get some 3/4" or 1" PVC pipes and try it out with a single plate; I think all of my materials (pipe, connectors, primer/solvent) were ~$12.
We all know how fast pvc glue dries, so before glueing, put everything together and lined up properly, then with a permanent marker, put a line from each piece to the corresponding piece leaving "marks". This way when you glue them together you can line up the "marks" perfectly. works like a charm anytime ur glueing pvc. hope this helps
pretty neat little stand there. I like the concept and idea of it, but would that PVC stand up to something a little more heavy? such as a fruit melon or possible a steel/metal plate?
I built one of your stands. I left the base and vertical part unglued so I can take it apart on the way to the range. The base was made a little longer for a total of 3 foot in length for more stability. Instead of using wires I attached plastic cardboard sheeting to the frame and just staple my targets to that. I took it to the range last week and it worked just perfect. Thank you for a great idea. I hope to make about 2 more and then maybe I can have a mini run and gun with them.
Awsome video! i have a metal stand that i built about two years ago and it is still around, however i need to replace one of the bars that have been shot through. but great design mine is very similar except i had had a cross bar that ran from the top to the bround for support for riffles. long live the republic.
I made one similar to yours out of 1-1/2" PVC. When strays shot up the top section, I cut it off and put two pieces of wood lath into the verticles and stapled a piece of corrugated plastic to them. Heavy cardboard would work too, and when it gets shot up just staple a new piece on. This is a great idea with many variations to fit the individuals needs of anyone. Keep up the good work!
Nice stand sootch. You could put sand or another material in the base before you glue it. That way it would be weighted. Also make sure you wrap some extra duct tape around on of the pipes for when a round hits the pipe. You could tape it back together.
great stand sooch, a person could prolly get away with super glue or pvc glue without primer for this project seeing as it does not need to hold water or pressure
on the otherhand if you have the proper materials, why not use em??
Replace the ties/string or wire with a bungie type cord. Make 4 of them . 2 for verticle , 2 for horizontal. Put a cord lock on them. When a stray shot cuts the cord easy on / off replacement. ( my wife drove me to this ). Then, easy to convert to other size targets. Anyway, a thought.
Just a thought Sootch and everyone else, for different target sizes you can drill more holes and use the thin bungee cords in 18-20" range instead of the one wire, makes changing silhouette targets to circular targets a lot easier.
Just had an after thought for those using different size targets. If you thread the wire in an X pattern it will accompany multiple size targets. Just a thought!!
Great idea Sootch.. Just a suggestion if it hasn't been made already. the only thing I would do differently is add another 2' PVC cross brace underneath the target. Add 2 more "T"s to the shopping list. You already have an extra 2' of pipe so you won't have to buy more. That cross brace would make that top piece more stable and won't put as much stress on the elbows at the top when you take it apart.
Hey sootch, I have a similar PVC stand and I fill the bottom portion with water to help keep the stand upright in our mighty Oklahoma winds. Pass it on. Great vid.
fantastic idea.... i watched the video on saturday and went to homedepot sunday... extremely easy to make and there are tons of things you can do to improve the design... THANKS AGAIN SOOTCH...
oh btw...HOW COOL IS THAT NEW ARIZONA GUN LAW PASSED LAST WEEK... ANYONE* OVER 21 CAN CARRY CONCEALED ... A TRULY PRO CONSTITUTIONAL LAW.... ROCK ON ARIZONA!!!!
The biggest advantage of a PVC stand is it's weight. I built a stand out of 2x4 that works great, but I leave it out where I shoot, it's too heavy to disassemble and move and store every time. If I build a PVC stand, I will probably use dowel rods vs. the wire. That would give you the advantage of a little more stability in the stand, stability in the target with any wind, but still allow you to replace it on an errant shot. I'll try to make a video if I ever do make one. Good Video, Thanks
Great target sootch00 The inside diameter of the PVC is 1" so some short 1" wooden dowels would make for a handy repair just in case someone shoots the frame. great idea ,,my range starts off at 30 yds unless you bring your own stand.
Our public range on a management land sayes we have to have a target stand at least 5 foot high and we have to bring it out our self / the target ranges provided are 25yards and 50 yards or the hunters to true in there rifles and no shotguns allowed
That type of Hoppes target was the first target I ever shot. It was with a lever action air gun for a shooting team in High School. Back then I didn't even know to line up the rear and front sights. Glasses would have helped, too. Anyway, I digress. That's a cool stand on the cheap! PVC is fun to work with, just a little rickety.
I have that PVC cutter. I highly recomend it if you work with PVC. It is so easy and simple to use. Great stand by the way. Good luck with your shooting range. You most likly already know, but Hickok45 has a really nice range. You may get some ideas from his range tour video.
awesome video ive been thinking about building a stand for some time now. thanks for the info sootch00. will you be posting a video about your range construction?
I love the stand! One thing you might want to consider is running the wire through the clothes pin springs, just so they don't get lost. I am probably going to build one of these things. I've been looking for a good idea on how to build a target stand, and cheaply. As usual, great video, Sootch!
@guns4good Dude nice stand went to make mineand it works great used a bigger size for the bottom. But just want to say thanks for the info, and idea. Nice job bro!!!!
I feel like an idiot, I've been using a sharpened 2x4 hammered into the ground with paper plates stapled to it. This is way better, I'm going to build this right away.
Nice drawing! :) You can do without the primer since it doesn't have to be water tight, Very cool idea! I am a builder and have been wanting to make one of these. Nice video!
I did not glue the pieces because I'm carrying it in a duffel bag. I might glue it in sections though... I'll have to work up some way to keep it together for moving all in one piece. Great vid!
That's just awesome. I actually made one almost identical on Thursday. I used 1.5" fittings and pipe for the base, 3/4" 5' sections for the up-rights. 4 reducers to go from the 1.5" fittings to the 3/4" pipe. All my base pieces are 2' long as well. Makes it very stable. I just tied a 3' wide piece of cardboard to the stand at the top. The extra width helped to keep it from moving. Worked really well. cont...
@actualityisabitch It's probably just the audio limiter in the camera reducing the volume so as to not overmodulate everything. Or something like that. I know just enough about audio to get me in trouble.
Well **cough** Sootch zero zero should probably just come out and tell us if it was an audio limiter or special ammo. I would be interested to shoot low velocity rounds out of a mk2. My grandpa is holding one for me...I can't "own" it tell I'm 21 though. It is one awesome gun. It is the exact same ones he's got. And ha I know just enough about about not knowing enough to keep me out of most trouble. : )
I made a similar designed stand out of wood. My friend had a new deck put in and gave me some of the old lumber. Score for me, most of the wood was in excellent target stand condition. So far my stand has lasted me 2 years, shooting a few times a month. Your design is far superior in weight/mobility and is very cheap to make. I like it, I think i'll make one for summer use. If it holds up to strong wind, my old stand is firewood. Thanks for the post.
Great video Sootch. I made a similar target stand but used wood for the upper. Honestly with a couple of the people I was shooting with I am glad that I had done that. By the end of the day there were chunks missing from the PVC tubes that were supporting the upper! I love your idea and think that it is a great idea for making a target stand. Will definitely try this one out myself cause the range I usually go to does not have target stands on it.
Paracord and tent stakes for guy lines for tying it down.
Bulldog Clips are more traditional as target fasteners, and the wire could be threaded thru them to attach permanently - less chance of you arriving at the range without fasteners. Maybe paracord would work instead of wire or steel rod and bulldog clips.
Thanks for the vid. I have been thinking of making my own portable stand for the range and this is a great idea. Simple to make and lightweight and will work perfectly. Keep them videos coming Sootch00!
I found the 52' B-A-R-R-A-C-U-D-A video again though! Little guy almost burnt his drag disc's up on his reel!
Nice PVC stand! I cant wait to see your homebuilt gun range! I'd rent a Backhoe and grade a 1':50' hole in the ground and bank up the dirt in the end! Should work great with some drainage! It might just roll me back again! 4th time viewing this! Later!
I use the for house for sale frame for my target stand, its cheap and metal is so small that its almost impossible to hit it. nice set up sootch Im going to make one also thanks for the vid
@Mr2fierce yea you can buy 21 feet of 1/4' steel rod for like .20ft and bend it in a horseshoe shape! .20 *21ft=$4.20! I also have built pvc sumthin like this before but they dont last long.
I just call one of my liberal asspuppet neighbors over and tell them to hold the target!!! I just paint "I HATE BUSH" on it first! and they think they're at a protest!!
Wow thats weird. I used the same word too. Didn't even see your comment till after either jsh1284. How bizarre! Sootch must of said it at some point and put that word into our heads. LOL

Thanks for the vid. I have been thinking of making my own portable stand for the range and this is a great idea. Simple to make and lightweight and will work perfectly. Keep them videos coming Sootch00!

Damn subscription YT bar ! Here I am again !
Later!

Awesome vid and awesome target stand!
PS: That "Don't tread on me" flag is now considered "racist" and "anti-semitic" by the Zionists in our government.

Peace!
