However, just to point out a flaw in your logic, Until this is properly tested by the general public there isn't a true way to find out if metro truly works in this environment. I mean, I think it will, but none the less. A phone's success isn't directly related to a desktop's success and vice versa. If you look at the iPad, it has a totally different interface to OSX.

Just read a consultants report on this. The summary headline was "irrelevant" to the users of traditional PCs. The main changed being aesthetic and aimed at different platforms. Microsofts director of windows experience - Jensen Harris made the comment in PC tech authority that "every screen needs to be touch". I do not want my 32 inch gaming screen to be touch. If it was I would no doubt be going blind in short order as I should not be that close to it. Imagine this with multi screen modes.

Windows 8 metro is good, but I more interested in the performance of the OS which is very good. Faster boot times and Windows 8 running under 500MB is impressive! I hope Microsoft will release performance updates for Windows 8 and not just security updates.

All running fine on my fully paid-up legal copy of Vista x64. Vista has now matured, and IS very stable now.

You don't have to go into the desktop interface on a tablets if you don't want and you can stay in the desktop interface on a laptop, only opening the start screen when you launch a new app (like you do with the start button now). As long as the experience is smooth &fast their strategy will work. If it's slow, people won't upgrade.

Everybody just calm down. In windows 8 you have an option to choose the metro UI view. Most of the other work has been done 'under the hood' as you would say because with windows 8 they've built a new OS from scratch which is much faster, smoother and better than windows 7. I can't stress this enough; you can switch to the traditional view if you want to.

@PSRBF6 If the Developer Preview and CES demo are anything to go by, the Metro UI IS the Start menu (they called it such in the CES demo). This means when you boot, you get this. You can drop through to the traditional, Windows 7-ish desktop, but whereas in Windows 7 clicking the Start button would bring up the Start Menu, in Windows 8 it will take you back to the Metro UI Start screen.

AFAIK, there's no way to disable Metro UI as it is part of Microsoft's unified UI vision -Xbox, WP7

but obviously that won't stop M$ from splitting it into 100 versions (from no-features up to all-features) and selling it full-price.
