I work at a small shop, and sometimes the sodas come in on these open-top cardboard palettes. I could just picture they had been sitting in a warehouse like that for months before, and there were probably exposed to all kinds of stuff. I sure as hell wouldn't drink em like that, so I always clean em before stocking.

That's a good question. As for humans, our urine is one of the most sterile body fluids, because of the ultra-filtration involved in its generation. If the rat has no urinary tract infections, its urine WILL be sterile or close to sterile.

Essentially, it is wasn't uncommon for people in the past to use their own urine to successfully disinfect open wounds... Though they usually boiled that stuff first...

Rat urine probably contains certain bacteria which are not a threat to it's immune system, but are a threat to the human immune system, so this myth isn't impossible.

But, can any single-celled organism survive for more than 5 seconds in a liquid as "healthy" as cola? (;

Except a lab rat kept in a relatively sterile environment is different from a wild rat exposed to all sorts of bacteria. A lab rat likely does not carry as many bacteria in the urinary tract as would a wild rat.

The beginning of the video specifically references harmful bacteria that the rats carry that are harmful to humans. There is nothing intrinsically harmful about the urea in rat urine.

But, it would be prudent to run the experiment with a group wild rats as the main experiment and a lab rat control group. Just to see the difference between the chemical and biological content of the rat excrements.

But, as much as I know, if the cola cans are held in a freezer after their delivery to a store, the bacteria should die off or become inactive enough no to do any harm.

Bacteria don't really die in the cold, they just slow down. We freeze our bacteria or place them in cold rooms to preserve colonies and prevent further growth.

There is no difference in the biochemical content of the rats urine samples. The bacterial colonizations would be different and I assure you that they would be different because the two populations (rat vs wild) live in very different environments.

What I meant to say was that since the lab rats (should) have much less bacteria in their urine, we could see the difference between chemical toxicity (the ingredients of lab rat urine), and the biological hazard (the bacteria in the wild rat urine).

Although, bacteria aren't the only real killer in wild rat urine. Some delayed effect rat-poisons can have a huge concentration in urine. You can have a bunch of seemingly healthy rats pissing a lot of poison on the cans, before they actually die...

By rat poison do you mean warfarin? People take warfarin every day in much higher doses than would be excreted in some rat urine. The bacteria is the real problem.

I was talking about neural-paralyzing poisons some people use when dealing with rats. They can cause huge damage even in small doses. For example, if a small person took a drink from 2 or 3 contaminated cola cans, there would be dangerous consequences.

But, you are right, bacteria present a much more potent (and plausible) danger to humans in this particular case.

Warfarin is anti-thrombotic drug that is used to prevent blood clots. However in rats it causes excessive bleeding and therefore death. If levels get too high in adults (INR>4) then there is a risk of bleeding. However it is difficult to get levels that high from some rat urine.
