@ColeBeasley... My comment was one of the best of the time. obviously there were many, but he was exceptional in my opinion. He was using finger board hammer on techniques (ala Eddie Van Halen) way before Eddie hit the scene... Collins was excellent also, but had a differing style all his own...
1970's rock n roll kicked major ass. Ace Freely was unreal. He was pulled over where I grew up doing well over 100 mph in his Ferrari....rock star cliche moment for sure, but man he could play.
1973 to 1975 was the real KISS before they turned plastic. This is a time when Kiss still wrote songs that were over 4 minutes long! Later on the stage show got bigger and the music got smaller. Hardly any 12 year and under fans 73 to 75. Late 70's half their fans were 12 years old, there is a reason for that, their music turned lame!
@METALIZE1 INfuckingDeed...their first two albums were the only acceptable things they did. Then these nice 'n safe jewish New York buisinessmen came to the conclusion they could milk these comic book caracters to the hilt.
And were indeed taken seriously only by 12 year olds.
@maryquant1967 He's the same prick that hasn't inducted Rush either. Great bands create their own legacy and don't need some corporate assholes to decide whether they belong in some lame HOF museum. I went there and didn't see a lot of my heroes....Judas Priest, Iron Maiden....etc.
The day after this first aired I told my dumb older sister that "Ace Frehley's WAAAY better than Jimi Hendrix" love the pure joy on Gene's face at 3:13 mark
Any one that does not think Kiss has musical tallent just cant see past the makeup. LISTEN....The music is amazing!! Peter as a drummer is VERY under rated and ACE is deffiniaty got a unique sound and was doing things in 74 that eddie van halen made famous (invented some think) in 78. Kiss were pioneeres and "gene"-yeses ahead of thier time!
@vockins I knew I could bait atleast one of you, mission accomplished. I'm sorry man, they just aren't talented musically, now marketing is another matter.
@thefoppa1000 oh I agree and I love music! I just prefer musicianship ,which they lack ,but that;s not what it was about for this band anyway. Sort of a personality cult, but I suppose rock back then was sufferring a bit so for those looking for something different ,they found it. peace
I love the way they synchronize dance towards the end, Gene and Paul then they face Ace while he's finishing up the solo and Ace joins them and they do that freaky cool KISS Deuce Dance! Just fucking love that.
Back when the boys were hungry,I love the fact that all the non believers from back then have been proven wrong! How can anyone watch this and say Kiss does'nt kick ass
im 17 and i was brought into rock by listining to Black Diamond live on the midnight special. i'm probably one of the only Black Kiss fans but i don't care they are the greatest
@lildsmoke12 Nope you are not the "only" black kiss son brother.
I been listening to them since 1976 and had all the posters, t shirts and records on vinyl. Saw the orginal line up too.
Also last year I met Ace Frehley in NYC and got to do a quick interview and he signed my guitar. I met a lot of famous people before, but this was the only time I was start struck.
You know your man is working hard....he's worth a deuce...classic verse...first concert ever Kiss Alive Tour April 1975 Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto Canada...kick ass rockin' roll...especially when you knew every word in every song!
Ace Frehley was one of the best guitarists of the day. His solo's are incredible. I remember watching this performance on TV back then. couldnt get enough Kiss...
@ColeBeasley Allen Collins was my favorite Skynyrd guitar dude, but Ace taught me how to play..... and did it wearing stack shoes, pounds of costume and greaspaint..... NOBODY in Skynyrd did THAT!!! This was great, kick ass playing while giving fans more bang for their buck......
Ace sounds great even in Low Definition/Low Fidelity! His tone is cutting. His bends are precise. It sounds like he's a lead guitar player in a rhythm guitar player's body. Precision. I can't help but wonder if he was drunk/stoned/etc at the time. Peter sounds sloppy, probably coked up. If Aerosmith comments about you "loving coke" then you do.
SO many people say Black Sabbath was the first heavy metal band. But in my opinion....No other band pushed the envelope & polayed LOUDER and Harder than these guys.AND put on a hell of an awesome show on top of that. a Balck Sabbath show compared toa Kiss show was like night and day.I like Sabbath & feel they made their mark on Hard rock, But KISS had all bases covered & then some.
@stingray1964 Yes that happened alot in the early years until they got used to those heels. You have to give alot of credit for being very original. I remeber seeing them in 74 or 75 in So. California and being so close to the stage that i felt the heat from the fires! It is a shame what gene did to this band, not allowing ace and peter for freedoms. Sure ace and peter smoked magic mary and drank, but they would have controlled it more if gene let them put more songs on the albums. Jew yorker!!
@barmtrail Totally original!! And these early clips remind me of why I got into them in the first place, SO MUCH ENERGY and STAGE presence!! I'm a few years behind you, I never saw them until 82 unfortunately, but they were still pretty good. I'd give my left arm to see them back in 74-75. Over the years they toured with UFO, Sabbath, Rush, Cheap Trick, Aerosmith you name it. Who opened up for them in 74?
I also agree, Simmons has turned KISS into TOO much of a business!
@stingray1964 I dont believe anybody really opened for then in 74. In those days they would just be on the ticket themselves or with other local bands in the New York area. Bill aucoin payed their way out west to promote their first 3 albums. Their music was not as good as ted nugent or aerosmith or even ufo, but their stage show and presence could not be ignored. Ace really made people take notice as well. Gene i believe was always jealous of Ace and knew he was a better axer. Gene was no good.
@barmtrail Oh okay....yeah Bil Aucoin maxed out every credit card he had on Kiss from what I've heard in the early days. I also heard those are his suits they are wearing on the cover of dressed to Kill...great stuff man thx!
@stingray1964 KISS was really a good band except for the politics which were mostly caused by gene. Paul was and still is cool. Buy today they are just KI...because there is no ace and peter. When i was a kid it was kill or be killed if you liked KISS, because you were considered gay if you like them because of the make-up. But me and my friends carried on and now we find out we fought for a money hungry asshole who only claims to stand by his KISS army. He is a fraud and he knows it!!
@stingray1964 MY friend and i went and watched peter in his band, "great balls of fire" in glendora Ca. That was a real trip because here is peter just sitting in a booth with his bandmates just drinking. lol So weird because here was peter criss!! and he is 10 feet from me and he is plastered. Then they played and they were good. Peter was just looking for his youth and fun of the old club days, but it was sad, but drinking heavy will lead you to this demise. What a world.
In KISS BEHIND THE MASK, Paul Stanley says "Sean Delaney was a creative dynamo who was an important part of the early team. he was responsible single handedly for taking a move that we did and by repeating it in the show, it became the signature classic KISS side to side movement".
Along with strutter & black diamond ,deuce is an all time classic...raw heavy rock, fantastic live performance from the masters...forget your zeppelin, purple, stones Early KISS made them look like pussy!!! Even AC-DC at their best (with Bon in my opinion) were still behind Kiss for that elusive live 5 star charisma!!!!
Now THIS(!) is KISS! Oh yeah. About as far away from Corporate America as any rock band could have been in 1975 and where no rock band belongs anyway.
In what kind of music can you get to hear real screaming ?? Not in derpessing rebetika, not in boring classical, not in cool jazz, not even on the dance floor... You can only hear it in rock n roll !!! Check out the scream at 2:34 !!! Rock n roll is best, fuck the rest !!!!!!!!!!!
@TonyBriggs the latter doesnt bother me so much, Kiss were the only band with a glamish look i really ever liked. but i definitely am dissapointed in the rest. rock isn't tough or rough anymore and its sad.
I remember watching the original telecast of this....a proud 9-yr old member of the Kiss Army (yeah, my older brothers started me early). Saw the original lineup on the 2000 reunion tour and it kicked my ass as much as the very first time I ever heard them.
I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to the original band members for not appreciating their music before now. I realize now that I should have been a true fan 35 years ago when everyone else was, and for that I'm regretful. Although I still don't care for most of the stuff from 1985 onward, it must be reitterated that in the seventies, KISS was the greatest rock and roll band on Earth.
PERFECT!!! This was KISS at their Best! They were a great and very original band and sound. I saw them in 1977 and they put on the BEST SHOW ever! I think even Micheal Jackson learned a few steps from Paul.
@gwamba These guys are smart and knew that this 1975 Midnight Special taping was going to be around for a long time and seen by a LOT of people... they were very well-rehearsed and serious here... and its awesome.

In 70's and 80's,bands like KISS, Aerosmith, Poison etc. have so much energy and passion in the music. They are real bands and their music is REAL music !!!!!!!!!!
Those were the days...raw in your face Rock n Roll of the 70's and because of that song in particular, picked up guitar, wanted to be the next “Ace”, but sadly after years of lessons and countless hours in garage it left me relegated to being one of the best “air” guitarist, ever…Thanks KISS
@mdonnelly1971- I respect both bands. Kiss and Iron Maiden are both pioneers of hard rock/heavy metal. No disrespect to Maiden, but KISS kicks their ASS.
When you have a great metal band- Metallica- closing Cobalt Hall with Detroit Rock
City. When Garth Brooks performs Hard Luck Woman. When Lenny Kravitz performs his version of Deuce, etc., it all shows you that KISS has influenced many bands outside the genre of Hard Rock/Metal. Without a doubt, KISS defeats Iron Maiden!
This is the moment that changed my life, when I saw this as a little kid on Midnight Special. Blew me away. Took up guitar, jammed in bands ever since.
Early Kiss like this is perhaps the greatest rock music ever made. They had it all back then, concise powerful songs, great showmanship and that raw, no bullshit essence that is what rock and roll is all about. They absolutely crushed in this performance, heavy as fuck, super tight, raw and polished at the same time. I actually can't think of a greater live performance than this. What a statement.
@blacksabbathish Huh? "No bullshit essence"????? The make-up, outrageous costumes, fire-breathing, blood-spitting, pyrotechnics... KISS was ALL ABOUT "bullshit" - no other band in history has been more characterized by their egregious incorporation of "bullshit." "Bullshit" is exactly what made them famous and what they are most well known for.
@blacksabbathish Gee whiz, blacksabbathish. You hit the nail on the head. Well written. And the best part for me is at about 3 minutes when all 3 are doing the undoubtedly trademarked KISS moves. It was Midnight alright and even more special than we knew then.
@blacksabbathish KISS in this era kicked every rock band in the ass on live performance. You can find AC/DC's late great Bon Scott who opened for KISS say as much.
@blacksabbathish If you listen and watch closely, you'll see and hear that the audio from this video is actually the studio recording. So of course it's super tight...there faking it! As is most music videos.
Yeah right???!!!!....either you're joking or you're completely tone deaf, this is as live and off the cuff as you could possibly get. You're not serious are you?
@pberger310 watch Black Diamond which was the last song they performed on midnight special. You can hear Paul mess up the starting riff really bad and Criss destroyed his drum set at the end....no faking this was totally live.
awesome opening line...'get up & get your grandmom outta here'. if gene showed up at my pad with that get up on my grandmom would smack him with some ground beef & call the cops
I have no idea what the hell they are talking about in this song, but they are rocking hard. When the lights catch a flash on Paul's guitar, you kind of remember what the mystique of KISS was all about.
mystique? wasn't it & isn't it all about money? that's what gene simmons constantly preaches, isn't it? usually, musicians say, "it's all about the music"...but even he says their music is often below average.
@ColeBeasley... My comment was one of the best of the time. obviously there were many, but he was exceptional in my opinion. He was using finger board hammer on techniques (ala Eddie Van Halen) way before Eddie hit the scene... Collins was excellent also, but had a differing style all his own...

PERFECT!!! This was KISS at their Best! They were a great and very original band and sound. I saw them in 1977 and they put on the BEST SHOW ever! I think even Micheal Jackson learned a few steps from Paul.

Rock contest: Kiss vs. Iron Maiden ... Reply with your vote. Thank you for your participation in the rock poll.
mdonnelly1971 1 year ago

I saw Kiss in 1974 with Rush opening
One lid of weed--$ 10
Concert ticket -- $ 3.50 (yes 3 fifty)
A night at the opera--PRICELESS
My ears use to bleed from listening to Kiss, Alice Cooper, Rush and Sabbath. At 50 it's a wonder I can still hear.

What a statement.
blacksabbathish 1 year ago 20
@blacksabbathish You said it, dude!! you said it perfectly.
bultaco111 1 year ago

It was Midnight alright and even more special than we knew then.
maryquant1967 1 year ago
@blacksabbathish KISS in this era kicked every rock band in the ass on live performance. You can find AC/DC's late great Bon Scott who opened for KISS say as much.
SupernautG 1 year ago
@blacksabbathish If you listen and watch closely, you'll see and hear that the audio from this video is actually the studio recording. So of course it's super tight...there faking it! As is most music videos.

@pberger310
Yeah right???!!!!....either you're joking or you're completely tone deaf, this is as live and off the cuff as you could possibly get. You're not serious are you?
blacksabbathish 1 year ago
@pberger310 watch Black Diamond which was the last song they performed on midnight special. You can hear Paul mess up the starting riff really bad and Criss destroyed his drum set at the end....no faking this was totally live.
