He was horrendously miscast for this roll. Since he plays a character like someone almost everybody knows, people everywhere (especially college students) flatter themselves into believing that they are living something like a Brideshead life. Waugh's Sebastian is an aristocrat and a contemplative, neither of which is brought out by Whishaw.

For those who are complaining that he seems "shy", there are lots of actors who are considered "shy" (such as Heath Ledger, Sean Bean, etc). There's nothing wrong with it, in fact, it can sometimes be a sign of a good actor (especially if he doesn't appear shy on film/in a theatre). :3

I have yet to watch Brideshead....that will soon be rectified! Ben does seem shy, yet Jane Campion (who worked with him on Bright Star) says he isn't shy! He is a lovely guy- that is obvious.

I was at Castle Howard while Brideshead Revisited was being filmed, and I met two of the actors outside the Fitzroy Room while I was killing time on the grounds. Don't remember who they were though, unfortunately...
