I don't think this scream sound effect originates with the 1953 film. It's a very funny scream, but give credit where credit is due. Just take a listen to Murray Spivack's work in the 1933 King Kong. The scream of the guy being eaten by the brontosaurus is hilarious.

I just checked my VHS copy and it's there as well on both the Hi-Fi and linear audio tracks.

I'm guessing you have either a mono VCR or a linear stereo VCR, so your problem may be a misalignment of the A/C headstack or, more likely, dirty buildup on the headstack and/or the capstan.

Your VCR may need a thorough tape path cleaning.

The scream occurs on the left channel and, with the linear tracks, anything that could cause the A/C head to miss the left channel will cut out the scream.
