Well can we at least hear someone play it so we can find out how great it is for fucks sake? Why have a video like this? It's like a documentary on the Mona Lisa without the painting being shown.
@BigBagsForRent@BigBagsForRent Joshua Bell, the man playing the violin in the beginning, is one of the best violinists around. He is playing on the Vieuxtemps violin in this video.
Here is one of a longer performance:

I honestly think nobody is going to purchase this strad for 18 million...the record price is 15 million, and the only reason the price went up that high was because all funds went to the Japan Earthquake Relief.
One of my clients let me try his old violin, It looked like crap, not fancy at all, plain maple back, old matte finish, etc. I bowed out my best scales and It sounded awesome, he then told me it is valued at $30,000. I about fainted as I handed it very carefully back to him.
US$200 paid for each live fish weighing 0.3 kg! Google this article: (fvn.no/okonomi/article907338.ece)
This will be paid in Norway for delivery of wrasse-fishes to the salmon farming of fish! These fishes eliminates the need for chemicals and antibiotics in salmon farming, because they eat lice (Gyrodactilus Salaris) directly from the skin of salmon. .
See 2 friends diving among this kind of fish at the Norwegian coast:
i mean, why wouldn't it sell for that much? its a culmination of what the luthier arts and musical history stands for. its an icon and an amazing instrument. there is no reason to sell it for any less than however much the top bidder is willing to pay...
Josh told me last night after a show that he actually liked his strad better. and that this video makes it look 10x better than any other violin when it's just a good fiddle. And he got his for a little under 4 million... either way, i'd be happy with a "bad" strad!
If I had the money for such a violin I would buy it just for the hell of having it. But knowing I do not have the money for it makes me want to play it even more. I have played 3 Strads in my young life and I hope this one gets the acclaim that it deserves.
I say if they want to find it a new home. Host an international violin competition for young musicians with multiple stages across the world. With a final stage held in Italy or something. And give the violin to the winner and award the others with exceptional violin that hang out in storage like this one. :D He did say a suitable home was the most important thing right??? lol But that's not happening. It would be interesting to watch and maybe participate. :P
In Genova there is a competition every two years, the winner can play the famous Paganini's violin, the Guarneri Del Gesù called "Il Cannone" (the cannon).
I can't how believe ignorant you people are. No one has done more for the violin then that "fat goblin" since Paganini, said by Ruggiero Ricci. He's helped the volin buisness grow, and has brought this beautiful music to people all over the world. Maybe you can get a grasp on that and begin to respect him when you stop wasting your time thinking of ways to try and put down a man who's acomplished more then you ever will.
@Noiss96 Yeah he helped the prices and his income grow out of proportion in the last few decades. It was not the only one but was definately part of it
My dad Geoff Fushi has the violin for sale. The owner set the price, Bein & Fushi are proud to have it. Not only my dad has said it's the best, but also Vieuxtemps, Ysaye and Yehudi Menuhin. To the mean comments about my dad -he'd be first to say he isn't a violinist, hasn't practiced in 50 yrs. The producers begged him to play it, perhaps wrongly he did. He's an expert and proof is that he's sold instruments to Itzhak Perlman, Joshua Bell, Gidon Kremer, Anne Sophie Mutter, Yo-Yo Ma, Midori...
Good-sounding violins are subjective; it depends on who's playing it too. A good violinist can have a completely awful, beat-up, $50 violin and he can still make it sound good.
If you take enough time and check for contemporary makers you will find an instrument which, to my believe, sounds almost as good as such precious old ones. I guess the price you pay for a Vieuxtemps is not for the sound only. Check for Pierre Dalphin here for example (I don't know him but I believe the sound in the video is exceptional for a new violin). We love to pay for names, do we ?
that's so dumb preserving an instrument for showcasing.
a violin is a masterpiece and it can go for millions upon millions in worth, but in the end its primary purpose in its "exquisite" life is still the same as any violin out there; to be played with.
its as if you're taking the mona lisa and hiding it in a ultra secure closet to preserve it.
@Violanerd6 Yeah, i've tried but its not the same... I have a friend who plays a strad that has the same chinrest and i've played it but it's not the same...
Plus...speaking about del Gesu and Strads...at one point it's ridiculous to say "this is the best"....ok unless you are not a hipocrit dealer. I hate this bullshit, they want to sell it for 20 millions or smth like that. It is insane. And this Jabba the hut who can't play s...t explains what is best. This kind of comercial crap make me become violent.

@TempoFurioso Sarah Chang is great, however, I think she can do great performances because of her phenominal 1717 Guarneri del Gesu that she kept it as her partner since 13 or 14 years old. (Of course she can do great performances becuase shes just number ONE!!!!)
@stradivarius001 yep, she is wonderful... she did say in one of her interviews that she already knows what her 1717 Guarneri can do and cannot do... maybe the Vieuxtemp will give her new possibilities... but it will need some time synching with it... yes her 1717 is a good partner, she already knows its properties, and thus can use it well
Screw that. My German copy of a Stradivarius sounds better than that. JK. I don't think its the best though
