  • We miss you Carl. :-(

  • You could hardly get people that differ more. The late great Carl Sagan was a wise intelligent sage. While Ted Turner is a greedy slimy dickhead.

  • Why didn't they just allow a 3rd grader to interview him?

  • carl sagan say in this interview USA is 18th in chil mortality (1989) now USA is 35th in child mortality, 34 countries cares babies better than USA, we should listen, richest country place 35 in child mortality SHAME

  • Ted Turner is not a retard. He's just a fucking idiot.

  • @gothatway09 Hahahahahahaha

  • Ted Turner does seem like a retard though.XD

  • I love the way he says 'Humans' at the start.

  • fukin retard host. surely one of his key competencies should have been to be able to speak.

ffs cant stand to listen to this prick

  • @firstspar that retard host happens to be a billionaire, unless you knew that. in that case you must be jealous.

  • @firstspar I don't think Ted Turner is a retard. Among many other things, he is the founder of CNN. You can like him or hate him, but he's not a retard.

  • @aigg He is a terrible interviewer though.

  • @tomplunket Arguably

  • Not bad for someone who smoked more green than this entire comment board.

  • More than 20 years ago, Carl Sagan already reported the problems we're dealing with now. The USSR still existed. The world has changed a lot since then. Apart from the way we tread our environment....

  • they should have every country to agree to cut there military budget and put it all towards sceince

  • Holy shit, was that a masonic handshake?

  • I dunno about you guys but Uhhh Ted Uhhhhhhhhh Turner is Uhhhh a moron? UHHHHHhhh

  • @bmxrider43 Not really man. People at that time didn't know as much as we do now. He was asking some honest questions of the time and he asked them in a very proper manner. Sagan was a genious and you can see how people look up to him and they pretty much want to hear him talk because he explains everything so well. This guy is the shit :D

  • I somehow like carl sagan more when hes interviewed then when hes presenting. he behaves differently

  • i wish my teacher was like dr carl sagan. this man make complicated things so easy to understand in more humainly way I wish he could come back. I miss him.

  • Nuclear technology is one of mankind's most powerful tools. Not just weapons; its a power source, its a new way to manufacture building materials and medicines. We have just begun to understand this. You couldn't travel in a submarine for months underwater without nuclear power. You have robot mission that were launched to the borders of our solar system that are still running on paint bucket sized nuclear batteries... installed almost 40 years ago! What will be possible in 10 years?

  • Oh man, the iq gap is tangible.

  • haven't read all comments but was this made before the fall of the Berlin wall?

  • Carl feeds people bull and Ted has a buffalo farm, ther's blow in it out yer arsenal!

  • UOUMMANNNS!

  • I didn't hear about Carl Sagan until after he died. I wish I had read his works before he died.

  • Is it just me, or does Ted Turner look like an asshole jock who has no idea what he's discussing?

Somebody put him out of his misery, and talk to him about, uhhh, duhhh, Pamela Anderson Lee?

  • In all my life, I can count my idols on one hand- those that I admire and aspire to be like. Sagan would no doubt be my #1! He puts political figures to shame. If people like this repesented the people (and Earth), I imagine we'd be much better off as a species.

  • @robertadiskin Very well said, glad to know that people out there think like you.

  • i have no idea who ted turner is, but it seems like he is way out of his depth "uhh yes thats interesting, i uhh certainly uhh agree with you. duhh nuclear weapons?"

  • Carl Sagan meets My Cousin Vinny...."The two yoomans..." "What, sir, is a yooman???"

  • Listening to Carl Sagan talk expands your mind!

  • Carl's got one of the coolest voices ever

  • @ChronicallyConfused haha i know! i could listen to him talk all day. and i love the way he says "humans"

  • If I believed in Gods, this man would be one.

Carl Sagan was one of the very few who "got it"

  • sagan's ear looks awesome

  • i can't take ted turner seriously especially after he's been played as parodies on Conan and Family Guy

  • @JonGeric could be worse, could be rupert murdoch sitting there raping the conversation.

  • this guy should be made a saint and be venerated more than jesus

  • I sure hope this is saved on at least 1000 hard drives. Important to remember the past. As a note of appreciation for the man...well, I love him. I just wish everyone could listen to him with an open mind. He really just wanted the best for our species, regardless of race, nationality, or religion.

  • Ted turner was way the fuck out of his depth, came across real stupid.

  • well carl....it's been 22 years,and....well,were in two wars atleast,we've got a negative bank account, and we are fucking up the environment even worse than you warned about...we were never good listners though, you know that lol. world should be doing the old shit flush here pretty soon, can't blame her..welp, back to jersy shore :)...haha...were like destructive monkeys..retarded.

  • Thanks for all your hard work Professor Sagan

  • Does that logo say CMI? Cause it cannot be CNN.

  • Intro was so long even Carl Sagan was falling asleep.

  • @Nallenbot- Turner is a businessman not a journalist or commentator. The two of them are on completely different wavelengths, it's obvious that Turner wants to talk about issues important to liberals. Sagan looks at the big picture and cumulative effect.

  • @Damndrrtyapes Sagan is talking about issues important to liberals. He is a huge liberal. Did you miss that?

  • Ted Turner would have made a far better truck Driver or cop.

  • Poor Dr. Sagan. I'm sure he had to take a long bath and steaming shower after this interview. Just looking at Turner makes my skin crawl. I can't imagine what it must be like to sit across from Turner.

  • Kinda sounds like Jeff Goldblum. Darn it Sagan you told the Illuminati that we are the enemy. idk jk

  • @ZellerIndustries He sounds a bit more like Agent Smith =p

  • This guy is the icon of analytical thinking.

  • i should have been born in the 1950's. Brain > Brawn.

  • @wiseimmorto I think you mean 2050, as the world advances intelligent becomes more important than your physical capability.

  • CAPTAIN PLANET!!!

  • maybe ted turner is alright

  • After reviewing Dr.Carl Sagans theories, work, and begging to read " The Dragons of Eden". I would give almost anything to have the brain of this man. I understand hard work, study, and dedication can get me there. I just feel he has a sort of unique intellegence about him. R.I.P

  • @helloimRickyD dude check out mr fresco it's common sense that he uses nothing in a book that can teach george cariln dave chappell bill hicks

  • @helloimRickyD You have the same brain. Its the application of your brain which is different. Nothing else.

  • @mik99D while inspirational, it's probably not true. Just like bones and muscles, we aren't all equipped with the same brain from birth, and our life experience modifies it as we go. We can probably all achieve more with proper techniques, but there are natural limits each of us will run into.

  • @rg0057 when you're doped up apathetically from toxic food, yeah maybe

  • I never knew Turner actually presented. I just thought he owned the damn station.

  • What an amazing, brave, couragous man Sagan was. He was concerned about the welfare of humanity in a way that almost no one else was.

  • Why don't intelligent conversations like this occur on tv anymore?

  • @WeAreStarStuff51 MTV owns everyones minds, people want flashy, vapid entertainment, it sucks. Carl Sagan is my hero.

  • @lastelement21 That's true. Attention spans have decreased. For example, even when they do have scientists like Neil Degrasse Tyson on CNN, it's only for five minutes of sound bites; no real conversation.

  • @WeAreStarStuff51 because it could make people think a little more about how they're used by corporate politics... I know, yourquestion was purely rethorical, but I couldn't resist.

  • @Acrimonator lol no, your comment is much appreciated

  • @WeAreStarStuff51 Because people gives ratings to Bill O'Reilly. I hope he goes out, just like Larry King.

  • @trampbiker "Wow they are actually talking about global warming back then? I thought this Carl guy would know better that it is a HOAX!"

Perhaps a guy like you should listen to a guy like Sagan.

  • Nationalism. Fuck It.

    We love you Carl Sagan!

  • @mntlPurple

As long as the alternative isn't a global dictatorship.

And yes, we all love Carl. Except Apple.

  • ha, for the first minute carl is completely spaced out.

  • Wow...a time when a television interview didn't devolve into screaming and yelling. Can someone get a DeLorean and a flux capacitor, I wanna go then

  • @Irishflyboy255 When someone tells you something that goes against your own view then your brain actually becomes defencive and starts producing a chemical ( to protect you ), the same chemical as when your life is threatened..

Fox news only acts like psycopaths when theyre arguing with smart people.

Btw how could anyone scream at Carl sagan, he is fcking cute :D

  • @Irishflyboy255 Would you settle for a remote control and knowing which channel PBS is on?

  • @monokhem lol good one that was funny

  • Both people smoked Cannabis.

  • @Anomki

lol i think if ur smart, smoking weed makes u even smarter, and if ur stupid, it makes you more stupid.

  • @dannee543 : Interesting theory, but I must ask: Where is the line, and what happens to someone on that line?

  • Nature has even more amazing "machines" which do not pollute, on the contrary recycle.

If humans are indeed that smart why so much pollution?

  • Turners response to Sagan's first answer: "ou...well...that's a...aa...that's interesting and...and...and...aaa..I...certanly...certanly...aa...agree with that."

    The guy is an idiot...

  • I wonder how much Ted understood.

  • Wow... this was 20 to 25 years ago, and the first question even back then had to do with climate change, and what are we gonna do to stop heating up the Earth. So, what have we done in all those intervening years to try to solve that problem? Not much! (Some scientific illiterates are even still in pitiful denial.)

    Yay humanity!!

  • when was this interview conducted?

  • @bcbizle 1989. Read the fucking description.

  • The interviewer looks like such an idiot. Poor Sagan. RIP

  • Lol Ted Turner...

  • he is agent smith

  • Carl Sagan you are my voice of reason!

  • If everyone was as kind and intelligent as carl sagan, we'd probably be living on mars by now

  • We're nearing the singularity

  • Episode 14 =D

  • Men engage in hoping, praying, pining, longing, desiring, anticipating, expecting, inferring and insinuating after they've expended many of their waking hours denying, cursing, denigrating, degrading, blaspheming, destroying and denouncing.

  • When I first discovered Carl Sagan and his works I remember hearing his Pale Blue Dot speech and I was so deeply moved that I cried. He helped me to discover the real beauty of the Universe.

  • @derekxnl me too!

  • Carl was an intelligent and a great communicator but....whats with the worship of him in comments?

  • "umans"

  • I keep forgetting, why can't they get rid of them by setting them off? I'm sure this sounds like a dumb question, but I'm curious. :|

  • @tiecuando Nuclear weapons? If they detonated them all...well...that'd cause all sorts of problems, nuclear fallout, nuclear winter and such not the least of them. You would have to literally put them somewhere WAY out of the range of earth...of course that wouldn't stop anyone from mining more Uranium and making more (hell, the instructions for making nuclear weapons have been published in magazines). Flying them all into the sun would work, they'd be a little firecracker for the sun...

  • @ZarathustrasCrown Yeah, shoot 'em off far away from Earth. But I'd still like to see them detonate. :)

  • @tiecuando You can see BILLIONS of them detonate every day :P or...well...on the sunny ones.

  • @ZarathustrasCrown Nope, I wanna see atomic firecrackers. XD

  • carl was prolly smartest man this past 100 years

  • I wonder which prolific, prominent and generation-defining scientific mind Rupert Murdoch would interview on a Fox News Special?

  • the idea Carl ,is that the other side will alwais try to anulate your arsenal ,the answer?more nuclear weapons .

  • jeff goldblum is playing him in the film version of "An Inconvenint Truth"

  • heres a question. Would one of the greatest minds of the last century aprove of where in part the world is going these days with the reduction in nuclear arsenals t he international push (states side and main body europe) to know the universe in greater detail than ever before?

  • Sagan said, "We are star stuff" and "a way for the cosmos to know itself."

All the atoms on earth and in our bodies came from supernova that blew up over 5 billion years ago.

Aren't we all just walking, talking stardust -- this cosmos become AWAKE and looking back at itself? -- and aren't we intimately connected to it all?

We are this wonder called life become AWAKE

    Please enjoy the dance.

And ultimately there's nothing that separates us from others in this grand mystery. Please be kind.

  • @leeroynaggins Right!!! -- and humans walked with the dinosaurs.

    LOL!!!

"The word god is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this."

    -- Albert Einstein

  • Even if it turns out in twenty years that evolutionary theory had major theoretical flaws, or that some other scientific fact is overturned, I would still consider people like Sagan to be infinitely superior to any creationist theologian or dogmatic demagogue. His balance, the power of his rhetoric and prose, his defense of free thought and democracy are values which would survive the upheaval of any one theory.

  • Sagan as usual hits every nail directly on the head. Turner might sound reasonably intelligent if he did not use "uh" in every single sentence.

  • I didn't realize just how dumb Ted Turner was until you place his tiny pea of a brain beside Carl Sagan's enormous powerhouse of neurons.

  • I find it interesting how he doesn't suggest getting rid of all nuclear weapons.instead he says having a certain amount of nukes would be enough to deter the other side.having none would be much safer I think.

  • why are nukes so powerfull ?

  • @british123able Nuke's Are Sick... Look up how thay work there Very easy to make. Very Powerful bad to health too.

  • @Chocolate9897 imagine a machine gun that fired mini-nukes, 1000 rounds a minute, i would hunt rabbit. . .

  • @british123able This is True

  • @Chocolate9897

They are nukes. They're purpose is to be bad to health.

  • @british123able "cause they are stuffed with grandmar's fart gas.

  • this is like eaves dropping in on the chess club champ and the running back while their having a conversation in the library after schools out.

    CLASSIC.

  • @soran27 LMAO!!!

  • @soran27 I prefer this to what's passed as interviewing now

  • I just found out the other day that this interview is only found on the VHS release of Cosmos...hard to believe Cosmos (PBS) was done in 1980....so advanced for its time - and deep intellect.

  • I could listen to him all day. What a difference then to the foolishness on tv- we need another one like him.

  • Comment removed

  • My points you have thusfar avoided are as follows, after u address them we can then move on to cartesian logic and why that is also a straw man.

-where did I say atheism is the answer to all problems as u claim I said? If I didn't, admit you misrepresented my argument

-quote where I said individuals shouldnt be allowed to believe what they want

-support your claim of this "new age science movement" which apparently is religious (contrary to the very definition of what science is)

  • Wow, wasn't TV news quaint back then?

Now some guy would be yelling at Sagan, calling him a commie and demanding he say why he wants America to fail...

  • sad but true

  • @leeroynaggins

Only the Democrat's view back then. Not that everything the Demo's say is wrong, just a narrow minded media then.

  • @12dollarsand78cents

So the scientific point of view = the Democrat point of view?

And it's the Repub view to malign science as unpatriotic?

    Okay then....

  • @12dollarsand78cents In a world that sagan talks about, there would be no government. Harmony would exist and it would be anarchy.

  • @lunarmansiondrummer

Actually Sagan would probably back just 1 global government and the abolishment of nations.

  • @leeroynaggins Only on the Fox Network.

  • @leeroynaggins *applauds* Ain't that the friggin' case. Thanks for the observation...I knew it, but now I can reflect on appreciating it.

Hard to imagine, isn't it....how "debate" didn't use to mean "egotistically self-serving label applied to the activity relating to berrating ones charecter in every manner available someone who doesn't agree with you...simply -for- not agreeing with you."

Ah well. Maybe the original meaning will last in some locked away history book for others to find.

  • @leeroynaggins Doesn't that get old quickly? I'm so sick of it

  • @leeroynaggins

Yeah, if he were interviewed on FOX he'd probably be asked why he seeks the destruction of America's arms industry by seeking a reduction and eventual elimination of nuclear weapons XD

Still though, it is always better to read his books than watch his interviews.

  • @leeroynaggins I know your post is hella old. But I agree. I'd shudder to think what would happen if Sagan had appeared on bill oreily, glenn beck, or fox news.I'm glad that no one (that I know of) has dishonored him by forming some type of religion for him.

  • @mistereveready

Yep. It would be all about Sagan's "controversial, atheistic viewpoint..."

  • Comment removed

  • @goog2k

Ahhh some cosmic star baby crap from the 60s...

Let me dust off my grandma's CS&N records...

We ain't "stardust". We were created from the dust of the earth and God breathed life into us about 6000 years or so ago... when the universe was all created at once.

Haven't you read the Bible?? It's the only science book you need...

  • carl sagan smoked weed

  • yeah, he smoked it regularly.

  • cool. Makes you wonder if there's a good point to be had for weed. If an accomplished scientist can do it, then apparently it aint worse than alchohol.

  • Comment removed

  • @andrewcramer13 realy? Did he just have one puff or was he a junkie?

  • @davfritz

I didn't realize smoking weed often made you a junkie.

  • @andrewcramer13

So what he smoked weed andrewcramer13? He's still far more intelligent than 99.9% of us. Maybe he needs it. This world is too boring for his smart mind.

  • @andrewcramer13

    No. My fault. It's not 99.9%. It's 99.9999999999999999999999999999999%.

People this decent doesn't come often. One in a million maybe.

  • @vegduck I don't have a problem with marijuana, 'm high right now. I was just stating a fact

  • @andrewcramer13 it was medical marijuana to help ease the pain of cancer. you're taking facts out of their context

  • @preposterous3637 no I'm not. he also smoked recreationally and greatly enjoyed the way it expanded his thinking. look it up

  • @preposterous3637 it's true. he was a recreational user for about half of his age.

  • @andrewcramer13

Wait till later in the interview when Mr. Ted "awwww" Turner asks Carl if he's a socialist.

  • @andrewcramer13 Yes he did.

  • I always find it a bit egocentric the way some people think that god interferes with the world for their sake.

  • I am a Christian who believes in Sagan's work, and evolution. No rational human trul believes that the Earth is 6,400 years old, or that some guy created the Earth in seven calender days. I believe in God and Jesus for personal reasons, and I have no doubt my faith is right for me. However, I cringe when I see these fundamentalist/evangelical lunatics rejoice in their unbridaled ignorance. They feel threatened by anyone who seeks answers because they have NO faith. They live in fear.

  • @TheOmatron i dont really understand people like you. you doubt the quality of contents from the package but buy it nontheless. I mean, if religious people were all like you, no doubt the world would be so much better, but i dont understand how you can keep something that has such flaws and keep it as perfect. the concept of god is nothing you can take lightly and just take for granted

  • That is where faith comes into play. I don't take the Bible literally word for word. I think anyone who does is ignoring the thousands of years of different translations, interpretations, additions, subtractions etc. brought on by man. I have experienced things in my life that leave me with no doubt that there is indeed a God. People need to find balance in their lives and learn to seek answers without trepidation, but also accept that there are some things that have no concrete answers.

  • "An atheist has to know a lot more than I know."[

    -Carl Sagan

  • atheists realize that there isn't objective truth to god just as any scientist. It is unknowable to man, so why even worry about it. I may consider myself an atheist because i dont believe in god just like i would label myself as not believing in fairies and ghosts.

  • I don't believe in fairies. I don't know if there is a spiritual plane. All I know comes from my studies and experiences.I love science, and I also love and believe in God. I don't think the two need to be antithetic. If I were to say that the sum total of my life experiences led me to believe that there was no God, I would be lying.

  • Good for you. I wholeheartedly agree that your faith does not need to be antithetical to your understanding of science. I don't share your faith, but I have a big problem with those people who choose to belittle someone like yourself or suggest that they are more enlightened than you simply by being atheist. The important thing is realizing the difference and keeping the two things separate. My best wishes.

  • it is important to recognise that believing in god is not supported by logic. In otherwords it is quite literally...and without question...equivilant to believing in fairy tales. You claim that there is no reason why faith is antithetical to science...I disagree and can show why. Science enhances knowledge by a methodological means. ie requiring evidence. Faith=no evidence. That is about as antithetical as it gets. no evidence vs evidence.

  • boorens18 - You don't take into account the fact that people, in general, do not abide by the scientific method in every action they perform in daily life. People have odd habits, superstitions and even propensities to believe that their dead relatives are there with them in time of need. Quite simply put, the scientific method is there for us when we put our superstitions to rest and perform grounded study. But it does not need to be at odds with all of those little odd things we at times do

  • yes they do...because those "propensities" give cover for fundamentalists. And infact lead to fundamentalism. If you treat ignorance like its ok as long as it's harmless, you shelter those who's ignorance DOES harm by giving them the cover of "moderation). There is better and healthier solutions to all of the ones religion provides.

  • @boorens18 I'm not talking about fundamentalism. I'm talking about a person's right to hold a personal belief/faith in God or the supernatural. I agree with you about fundamentalism, but don't believe that a god-based religion should be any less desirable than something like the new-age science movement (which includes little religions onto itself). Of course we should all look down upon dogma, because that affects cultures of people equally.

  • and who said you didnt? This has nothing to do with whether or not you have the right to. Of course you do, this has to do with whether or not culture should percieve it as good, or bad. (ps nope your wrong, science doesnt incorporate religion into itself, as it specificially prohibits faith)

  • Well, "good or bad" sounds reductive to me. I don't think you and I have the right to decide what culture should consider to be good or bad. That's up to people to negotiate dynamically. Personally, I believe that a person is entitled to have faith - that's their prerogative. What's in their mind belongs to them. To think otherwise is objectionable to me. I think you missed my point about the new age science movement - that's not "science".

  • All I have done is explain which way to go is healthy for a culture. I even expressly pointed out that individual people should be permitted to believe what they want. So dont try throwing that straw man that I am dictating what individuals can think at me. It makes you look pathetic. I said that as a culture, we should not support irrational justification (as is done for religion) because it is easy to exploit.

(ps please direct me to this new age science movement you speak of )
