The Irish government was so weak that it just let the evil catholic church do what it wanted and it became very much like the SS in Nazi Germany, a state within a state, above the law. It controlled peoples minds and abused its victims. Why do you think that so many Irish people came to Britain in the 50s and 60s? to escape

Children brought to these laundries and called "whores" and "bastards" as if they even knew what they meant. Nuns telling them they wont get to heaven unless they repent...what about the nuns repenting? Then, the Vatican has the audacity to deny this ever happened, or, they claim theses "women" came of their own wills to these laundries. The church lies, and is cruel!! Shame on the Catholic church and its Vatican and Pope. I spit on all of them!!!

An Irish colleague of mine told me that on her final day of school at a harsh RC school run by nuns, she walked into the classroom of her most hated "teacher" and punched her hard on the face and walked out!! This excuse of a "teacher" used to make girls drop their knickers in front of the entire class to be thrashed with a ruler. This was the late 60s. I say good for her!!

@NancyWhiskeyNo1 The saddest thing about the Magdalene Laundries is that it is not closed because of its cruelty and inhumanity ... but because of the advance of washing machine. The nuns never get their punishment. I rewatch this, and it brings tears to my eyes still. It's a sad, sad world....

Wow! That was pretty damn powerful, and shocking to say the least. Crimes of the Catholic Church for which it still denies to this day (even attempted to supress that movie The Magdalene Sisters). Those poor women. Treated like shit and abused daily just because they were raped, unwed mothers, or "too attractive". Damn priests and nuns. Great job on this video.
it is my understanding that if a husband left the Irish Army to join the British Army in WWII leaving the family unit broken up that all the children were made wards of court and placed with the good shepered nuns...?
I really hate this crap. It makes me feel sad. It's so depressing, it should have never went on. I hate those nuns and fecking priests. those poor people..its scary that this only stopped afew years ago. it wasn't so long ago. It's creepy. I was really young when some of them were still open. creepy.
The bible says to live your life through the eyes of God, and what these Nuns and Priests did to these young girls and woman was not of "God", and they were not living according to the word of God. They verbally, psychologically, physically abused these Women. They did not deserve to be locked up, and have their own Children sent away, never to be seen again by their Mothers.....this is just awful, pure evil. Shame on those of the Catholic church who did this....THEY are the sinners!
I am a Catholic and I am proud of it...until i learned about the horrible facts about the Magdalene laundries just yesterday...i got fixated with this and was able to learn more in a day...now, I am more saddened than proud....in fact, i am ashamed of being in a Church which has caused injustice to women for 150 years and maybe even more...it's like throwing stones to 'Magdalene' all over again...it infuriates me how the Church itself never learned from the Bible...
@friltch Through the Church's tens of thousands of schools, hospitals, hospices and other social service agencies she provides education, health care and other needed services that alleviate the sufferings of countless millions of people in every country on earth. The Catholic Church is the largest charitable organization on the planet. What other church and make a comparable claim? Never stop being proud to be a Catholic.
@friltch The Church is divinely inspired and maintained and does not need to defend herself. She cannot become corrupt and sin even if her members do. The Church is the means God has given us to get to heaven. Those who listen to her and follow her teachings are saved. The Church has produced some of the holiest people who ever lived as well as the greatest theological minds. What other Church can boast of St. Francis of Assisi or St. Theresa of Avila?
@friltch While is is sad an undeniable that this did happen, consider the motives of whoever made and promotes this video. What makes you so sure that it doesn't take license with the facts by exaggerating the malice and nastiness while ignoring some redeeming qualities of these institutions. Remember all the love and goodness we find in the world we also find in the Church as well as all the evils and misuse and abuse of power.
it was like this.. if you sinned you had to confess immediately... or go to purgatory or worse when you die burn in hell.. so we had to attend confession every week.. many of us who confessed or received communion probably received from sick priests.. hundreds of thousands we married in church through the years.. who married us, who baptised us.. had they the sins of the world on their hands.. imaging receiving your first communion from an abuser?? etc. etc.. i feel sick.. i need out of this..
I'm a Catholic and my concept of the Church is so different from this. Admittedly I'm an English Catholic and it's probably the Irish mindset that caused all this. It's unforgiveable and I do feel ashamed to belong to a Church which allowed this treatment. You ask - how could nuns and priests do these things - take innocent girls from their homes, having no mercy for an unmarried mother and her child? I'm shocked and angry.
im in my 50s and remember back when i was a boy how afraid i was of the priests and nuns.. they did these things because the church was like Nazi Germany.. they had so much fear put into us you dare not question them.. they knew this and used their power to abuse sexually physically and mentally children.. we believed they were so close to god they were right with everything.. i want a change.. i pity those who have to get married in a church today or have a baby baptised.. what do we do?
How could a people be so deceived as to give their precious daughters over to the monstrous Catholic institutions of guilt and pain. The pope Gregory "the great" said that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute and that's why these places are named after her. She was in fact Y'hoshua's wife and the mother of his children.
The Catholic organization is referred to as the great "Whore of Babylon" in the Book of Revelation (17&18). The guilt belongs on her. Woe unto her.
laurierevill, you loose any credence of your argument by finishing "I pray to jesus" that's part of the system that created this mess, this blind faith is dangerous in all religions.
That was a very moving video, and beautifully put together. It is an amazing thing that these so called "servant of Christ" these "Christians " could not follow the simple human quality of understanding tolerance and forgiveness. There religion the Catholic religion was so obcessed with human sexuality, that they were ignorant of its beauty and considered all sexyality to be evil. This led them to the darkness of hatred towards their fellow humans who tasted what nature gave us.
This is the result of total fear based mind control on a whole population. The catholic church and the towns people on the take profited from it I pray to Jesus this never happens again. He is all we need.
The catholics are brainwashed to think they must pay and pay and pay and pay and pay.....nothing is ever enough, is it? Especially if the priests and nuns and pope says so. Once THEY decide you are worthless that's it. Not even your own catholic family will doubt it. Brain washed zombies.
Thank you for putting this together, a thoughtful but distressing overview of this shocking story; of how little respect men had for girls and women despite the statues of the mother of god everywhere. Men committed a great deal of the 'crimes' which led these women to be incarcerated - I know the stories my Catholic young friend told in the 1960's in Glasgow and she was terrified of her priest and we were far from any Magdalene laundry....
Your soul has journeyed deep to reclaim the courage to speak your Truth and expose the hypocrisy and injustice placed upon you and so many other women. Thank you for using your voice to be the voice of many who are not able to speak and for those who can no longer speak.
funny how they had to pay for their sins. because jesus already did that when he died on the cross for our sins! His blood washes away our sins if we believe he died on the cross for our sins and ask for forgiveness of them we will go to heaven. much disrespect to the cathoilc church
We don't need manmade untruths dictated from manmade books any longer. People should be looking within for truth and guidance and humanitarian love and kindness through friendship and relationships. Religion preaches it but does not practice it. How many people that carry out horrid acts would claim to have a religous faith?......only too many!
Religions have a lot to answer for they think they are omnipotent and cannot be touched well. they are vile, uncaring, selfindulgent and should never be forgiven as they know what they are doing, extorting the weak
My mother is Irish Catholic. This video explains her delusional/abusive treatment of me as an innocent child. I was an instrument of the devil because a little boy kissed me on the cheek when I was 6 years old. It still goes on to this day.
How will I ever forgive her? How will I heal from the damage done by her merciless, sex obsessed Irish Catholic "Church?'
She had sex before marriage & may have been pregnant so she projected her own "sins" onto me.
no, human stupidity poisongs everything. Humans poison everything. Religion isnt anything that can be good or evil on its own, its just one of those excuses that people use to achieve their own personal benefits. Religion can be a good thing, but some people use it for horrible causes.
Please show me an example of religion doing anything good that couldn't be done without it.
Believing in anything without question is dangerous. Believers will always do harm to others because they never question their religious leaders. They are taught blind obedience and blind belief.
That is what religion is, deliberate ignorance and mindlessness. It is dangerous and leads to inevitable disaster through abuses of the power surrendered to it.
Many people get strength and a reason to live from their religion. Religion means basically that someone wants an explanation for all this that surround us. Its perfectly natural for human mind to do, thats why there are so many religions. I hate both people who sell and shout out their own beliefs as the truth and people who try to remove all religions because of some bad experiences. you know nothing, sorry.
heh bad guess, and i dont know any catholic priests because theres none in my country. but i have had so many good experiences that I cant see things like you do. I'm just saying that if some people use religion for their sick needs, it doesn't mean that everyone in this world will or wants to.
The people you had good experiences with were not your friends? These were just superficial experiences with strangers & you can't see that they could have more to them than meets the eye?
I'm sure lots of people had good experiences with Hitler, Stalin, serial killers, and the priests & nuns who abused these children. When they learned the truth they didn't defend them or say as long as they were good to me, no problem.
This is a beautiful video, ive seen the movie & have read a few books about the people that once lived there to it always makes me sad reading about it. you should write a book to. at the moment im reading a book called for the love of my mother by John Rodgers. x
This is just incredible. I feel the pain of those who have been through this. You have made an unbelievably powerful comment but not one lost in or destroyed by despair but still with some hope and yet one which still cries to heaven for justice, to be heard. And heard these women must be, and loved, and healed, and cherished, and valued, and honoured. It is a perfect memorial for them and others like them around the world.
Aside from the obsession with religion, politics, acquisition of land and wealth, the weather, the curious double standards and somewhat unprincipled nature of the people, the cost of living, the narrowmindedness and shallowness of thinking, the abhorrent attitude towards conservation and protection of the built and natural heritage, the mealy mouthedness of the politicians and the general inability to enforce rules or even create a decent constitution for the protection of children, it is great
I curse the cursed RCC! This is sickening, and whats' worse?: their atrocities are many and many more severe than this sick and lame video presents.
I commend you for making remembrance to those poor souls; abused, alienated, misrepresented and without a life of knowing human love. I suspect many came to know YHWH by Yeshua's saving grace though.
I dont have the words, these people are condemned, cursed and unforgiven.
As for those that allowed it to happen, there must be punishment.
I dont know how or why but these children were already hurt; only to be hurt more by a perverse and vile system; again run by those who should have been thrown into piles of manure.
Scum! But for anyone who has come through this tell people of the suffering.
These people are blasphemers against the spirit, there is no forgiveness for that.
This is a beautiful video in remembrance of the suffering of the innocent. May it unite all women to join in advocating for equal and just treatment under the law. It incenses me that this was allowed to happen under the guise of religion.
the Magdalene sisters/system was a throw back to Victorian England. In islamic countries women who are raped are judged under Zennah laws and often stoned to death. There isn't a single system that treats women as they aught to. Our system tells women to go and kill their babies if they are inconvenient to us. we still have work to do.
i will never understand how in gods name a little girl having been raped, gets sent away by their parent (s) and how a nun could call them a dirty whore. they were raped! at 7!!!!!!! sickening
isn't it such a shame....i actually work in a convent rest home for retired/ailing nuns and have heard about this awful story, but when you learn about what the Sisters have gone through as well you understand it was a vicious cycle of "penance", that many of the nuns, as young girls, went through before becoming a nun....you often wonder why they stayed....but I guess it was all they knew. I have been trying to find a copy of the movie in stores regarding this story but haven't had any luck.
the magdalene sisters is available at amazon on line for a very reasonable price and it has a documentary called sex in a cold climate with it. i know all of the nuns were not vicious and cruel and it's terrible that the ones that were along with the priests have given them such a bad name. i have heard of abused girls staying to be nuns. also the stories of other places and asylums are horrific. terrible history.
i´m trying to find that movie. Where can i find it apart from the internet? because i can´t find it in any store. i really appreciate your answer , this is on of my favorites movie.
i really don't know...i got mine from amazon on line. sorry. but...the documentary sex in a cold climate is here on youtube. just put in search "sex in a cold climate" and you will see all the parts. happy easter.
this is v.sad have done research into magdalene laundries its a very scary very shocking past the sad reality of it is that after the last laundry closed in 1996 there were still women left in the convents as there families refused to collect them or acknowledge them these women have suffered enough the least there relatives could do is allow them to come home .There are some however whos familys have long since gone and have no choice but to stay in the convents until they die .free them !!
I am Slovakian, and till tomorrow, I have never heard about this terrible things. I was thinking that Ireland is a great place to live... now I´m confused, indignant ( this word I found in dictionary:-) and can´t swallow that such of things could happen in 20th century... in Europe! The religions of all kind don´t make a good service to us, I´m afraid. Those things happend to the women was serious evil, made by mistaken... unbelievable, but truth
Such a powerful video, thank you very much for sharing. The Magdelens will never be forgotten, my thoughts are with you always.
The R/C Catholic church is a sham! When are people going to wake up to this fact? Madness took a u-turn when christianity came into play. The R/C Church and the Irish government have a lot to answer for, people like the Magdelens deserve to be heard. They deserve peace.
It's sad to think that the Catholic Church would allow women to work in these laundries without any kind of justice. Even a criminal has more rights then these women had!! At least those accused of a crime get a trial to determine their guilt or innocence - these women didn't get that. Completely barbaric what happened to these women - may the women of the laundries always be remembered for all the suffering they had to endure at the hands of the nuns and the Catholic Church in general.
The Catholic Church has always treated women with contempt. As far as they're concerned women are only good for making babies and washing the dirty knickers of priests, oh and cleaning the church of course.
Its a very sad subject that not all that many people seem to know about..im so glad the video gave you a little insight into how these "fallen" women suffered and i hope you continue to read more about the subject
i am speechless! this deeply touched my heart. i cried more and more with each part i read. this is beautiful and in my faves now. my heart breaks a little every time i think of all those women and girls. i will NEVER forget the magdalenes!! never!
Thank you for this touching video. People need to know about these terrible things, not least to remember these poor victims of a barbaric and cruel society.
Ironically, a nunnery in a nearby town closed. The last nun pleaded for women to come forward to save it but everyone remembered the Magdalene laundries.
No one came forward, the nun died alone and the nunnery closed.
don´t take it bad,but i don't think that was justice, not all nuns are like this and i know it because i go to a nunnery the Sundays (if i can)and my aunt is very close to them,it´s like people, there are good people and bad people but anyway i respect your opinion and obviously i respect you...peace
My grandmother went to a convent school run by nuns. Not one of them was nice to her and all of them beat the crap out of her (we're talking canes, whips and belts using the buckle as the business end - and that would be on a good day). She never went to church after that and stayed away from all things Catholic after her dreadful experiences.
I also personally know girls who stayed at a Catholic unwed mother's home. All the nuns were nothing short of barbaric there.
One mother I know of went into labour. Her waters broke all over the floor.
Instead of getting her to hospital, those evil nuns told her to clean up her mess, scrub the floor clean and polish it - they fored her to carry heavy buckets of water while enduring strong and constant contractions.
She almost lost her baby because of those cruel heartless monsters.
Being a victim of rape i can not imagine being crucified for the sin that was not committed by me. Thank you for your work. it is greatly done indeed!
Seeing this makes me glad that the people who are stupid and uneducated enough to embrace this kind of "religiosity" are slowly dying out thanks to free education on the internet.
Beautifully done! How wonderful that the payment for all our sin was accomplished at the cross of Christ. Forgiveness for eternity is ours when we trust him for our salvation. I am so grateful he rose from the dead. I hope you are too. Regards.
MY GOD! Those poor innocent girls! This kind of fucked up shit pisses me off so much! It makes me want to kill those fuckers gruesomely! People who fuck innocents up should have a thick metal tool stuck up their asses! And, if I was there, being extremely abused, I would have encouraged those girls to rebel and beat the fucking shit out of those worthless fucking tyrants! Sorry for being too rash but I have to. Lastly, I hope those families are fucked for abandoning their girls.
I'm crying. Thank you for showing who the real sinners are. They have no remorse or compassion for their victims. Shame on the nuns and priests who use their position to hurt people. Shame on the Catholic hierarchy for protecting them and not the children.
fecking evil religion catholic satanists , why did ppl listen to these evil bastards ?

I am a Catholic and I am proud of it...until i learned about the horrible facts about the Magdalene laundries just yesterday...i got fixated with this and was able to learn more in a day...now, I am more saddened than proud....in fact, i am ashamed of being in a Church which has caused injustice to women for 150 years and maybe even more...it's like throwing stones to 'Magdalene' all over again...it infuriates me how the Church itself never learned from the Bible...
friltch 1 year ago
@friltch Through the Church's tens of thousands of schools, hospitals, hospices and other social service agencies she provides education, health care and other needed services that alleviate the sufferings of countless millions of people in every country on earth. The Catholic Church is the largest charitable organization on the planet. What other church and make a comparable claim? Never stop being proud to be a Catholic.
rowsofvoices9 1 year ago
@friltch The Church is divinely inspired and maintained and does not need to defend herself. She cannot become corrupt and sin even if her members do. The Church is the means God has given us to get to heaven. Those who listen to her and follow her teachings are saved. The Church has produced some of the holiest people who ever lived as well as the greatest theological minds. What other Church can boast of St. Francis of Assisi or St. Theresa of Avila?
rowsofvoices9 1 year ago

Wellymary1 1 year ago
im in my 50s and remember back when i was a boy how afraid i was of the priests and nuns.. they did these things because the church was like Nazi Germany.. they had so much fear put into us you dare not question them.. they knew this and used their power to abuse sexually physically and mentally children.. we believed they were so close to god they were right with everything.. i want a change.. i pity those who have to get married in a church today or have a baby baptised.. what do we do?
fairhillnorrie 1 year ago
How could a people be so deceived as to give their precious daughters over to the monstrous Catholic institutions of guilt and pain. The pope Gregory "the great" said that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute and that's why these places are named after her. She was in fact Y'hoshua's wife and the mother of his children.
The Catholic organization is referred to as the great "Whore of Babylon" in the Book of Revelation (17&18). The guilt belongs on her. Woe unto her.

laurierevill, you loose any credence of your argument by finishing "I pray to jesus" that's part of the system that created this mess, this blind faith is dangerous in all religions.
johnsovx 2 years ago 3
That was a very moving video, and beautifully put together. It is an amazing thing that these so called "servant of Christ" these "Christians " could not follow the simple human quality of understanding tolerance and forgiveness. There religion the Catholic religion was so obcessed with human sexuality, that they were ignorant of its beauty and considered all sexyality to be evil. This led them to the darkness of hatred towards their fellow humans who tasted what nature gave us.
Irishfreethinker 2 years ago
This is the result of total fear based mind control on a whole population. The catholic church and the towns people on the take profited from it I pray to Jesus this never happens again. He is all we need.

Good luck with that. Jesus has done a piss-poor job of keeping his followers in line so far.

The catholics are brainwashed to think they must pay and pay and pay and pay and pay.....nothing is ever enough, is it? Especially if the priests and nuns and pope says so. Once THEY decide you are worthless that's it. Not even your own catholic family will doubt it. Brain washed zombies.
laurierevill 2 years ago
Thank you for putting this together, a thoughtful but distressing overview of this shocking story; of how little respect men had for girls and women despite the statues of the mother of god everywhere. Men committed a great deal of the 'crimes' which led these women to be incarcerated - I know the stories my Catholic young friend told in the 1960's in Glasgow and she was terrified of her priest and we were far from any Magdalene laundry....

Regilion poisons everything.
maryellen728 2 years ago 2
no, human stupidity poisongs everything. Humans poison everything. Religion isnt anything that can be good or evil on its own, its just one of those excuses that people use to achieve their own personal benefits. Religion can be a good thing, but some people use it for horrible causes.
garad123456 2 years ago
Please show me an example of religion doing anything good that couldn't be done without it.
Believing in anything without question is dangerous. Believers will always do harm to others because they never question their religious leaders. They are taught blind obedience and blind belief.
That is what religion is, deliberate ignorance and mindlessness. It is dangerous and leads to inevitable disaster through abuses of the power surrendered to it.
Lies, fear & mind control is not good.
maryellen728 2 years ago
Many people get strength and a reason to live from their religion. Religion means basically that someone wants an explanation for all this that surround us. Its perfectly natural for human mind to do, thats why there are so many religions. I hate both people who sell and shout out their own beliefs as the truth and people who try to remove all religions because of some bad experiences. you know nothing, sorry.
garad123456 2 years ago
You "hate people who...shout out their own beliefs."
Aren't you shouting out your beliefs?
No one else can express their beliefs?
"some bad experiences"
Are you kidding? Millions of innocent people murdered & tortured, children raped & beaten for years is "some bad experiences?"
I'd hate to see your idea of a horrible nightmare! The suffering of others doesn't register with you. I know that much & that's plenty.
Let me take a shot.
Relative/friend of pedophile priest.
Deny it.
maryellen728 2 years ago 2
heh bad guess, and i dont know any catholic priests because theres none in my country. but i have had so many good experiences that I cant see things like you do. I'm just saying that if some people use religion for their sick needs, it doesn't mean that everyone in this world will or wants to.
garad123456 2 years ago
"I had so many good experiences"
The people you had good experiences with were not your friends? These were just superficial experiences with strangers & you can't see that they could have more to them than meets the eye?
I'm sure lots of people had good experiences with Hitler, Stalin, serial killers, and the priests & nuns who abused these children. When they learned the truth they didn't defend them or say as long as they were good to me, no problem.
You lack empathy & imagination.
maryellen728 2 years ago
The religious believe a DELUSIONAL explanation of reality based on a myth. They don't look for answers for themselves.
The Jewish religion is the only one that doesn't seek converts. The rest "shout out their own beliefs as truth" & promote proselytizing.
'you know nothing, sorry"
I know one thing: you're rude, insulting, condescending & arrogant. Oh, I forgot insincere, "Sorry."
The greater the ignorance, the greater the arrogance.
Sorry for the millions of innocents killed by religion.

Great video and poem!

These people are blasphemers against the spirit, there is no forgiveness for that.

the Magdalene sisters/system was a throw back to Victorian England. In islamic countries women who are raped are judged under Zennah laws and often stoned to death. There isn't a single system that treats women as they aught to. Our system tells women to go and kill their babies if they are inconvenient to us. we still have work to do.

isn't it such a shame....i actually work in a convent rest home for retired/ailing nuns and have heard about this awful story, but when you learn about what the Sisters have gone through as well you understand it was a vicious cycle of "penance", that many of the nuns, as young girls, went through before becoming a nun....you often wonder why they stayed....but I guess it was all they knew.

Ironically, a nunnery in a nearby town closed. The last nun pleaded for women to come forward to save it but everyone remembered the Magdalene laundries.
No one came forward, the nun died alone and the nunnery closed.

My grandmother went to a convent school run by nuns. Not one of them was nice to her and all of them beat the crap out of her (we're talking canes, whips and belts using the buckle as the business end - and that would be on a good day). She never went to church after that and stayed away from all things Catholic after her dreadful experiences.
madoldwoman 3 years ago 2
I also personally know girls who stayed at a Catholic unwed mother's home. All the nuns were nothing short of barbaric there.
One mother I know of went into labour. Her waters broke all over the floor.
Instead of getting her to hospital, those evil nuns told her to clean up her mess, scrub the floor clean and polish it - they fored her to carry heavy buckets of water while enduring strong and constant contractions.
She almost lost her baby because of those cruel heartless monsters.
