Despite the debate, Chet Atkins thought Hank Snow was pretty good. So even if he wasn't as good as Chet Atkins, he still gets some pretty good endorsements.
I wish there was a video. This must have been something to see in person.
I like how all the comments are like "WOW Hank! Oh and Chet was alright too I guess". Chet was one of the greatest guitar players of our time, what he's doing on this particular tune is about 20x more complex than Snow's ragged primitive technique.
@bigdjindustriez True, and Chet made it so smooth that if one does not know much about guitar, they would think it was easy. But that is an illusion, because Chet made it only SOUND that way.
@daffydoug Yes sir, that is correct. I play fingerstyle guitar and have studied Chet's technique since the beginning, there's nothing easy about it at all.. everything is inside a chord. Hank Snow's guitar playing wasn't very impressive at all from a technical point of view, and it just kind of annoyed me that people on here were going on about how 'good' he is and basically just dismissing Chet.
@Mandolin1944 I couldn't have said it better! Chet could truly coax them crystal clear notes from the instrument. And in other tunes, where he uses harmonics, it does indeed sound like bells!
Chet could play any kind of music and have it sound classy. There are some great guitar gods out there but Chet was one of the best! RIP Mr. Atkins thanks for all your picking and thanks for posting this!
I liked Hanks pickin and some of his songs, but was never a big fan, espececially after how he treated his son, Wilf Carter did not care for Hank either, he called him " one of those Hollwood cowboys" where as Wilf was a REAL cowboy, they recorded once together for the CBC, Chet was always in a class by himself, he was a true gentleman, and helped a lot of entertainers get there big break, the Everly brothers just to name one, his style was unmistakeable.
Hank had a high opinion of himself. I'm sure he thought he was "helping Chester get some eposure" when this was made. Story goes that in later years Chet was producing one of Hank's albums and he asked Hank to try something a little different on a retake of a cut. Hank fired off a comment probably to the effect of "who do you think you're talking to?" At which point Chet left the studio. Someone else finished the production and Chet never entered the studio to record Snow again.
After listening to him dozens on WSM, I finally saw the Singin' Ranger do "I'm Movin' On" at the 1964 Michigan State Fair. I been a-pickin' fool most all m' life and played "Double Eagle" on acoustic, electric, 6+12 string gittar 5-string banjer, mand'lin, accordion and pianny, but hearing HS flat pick the dickens an' a-swappin' faintsy licks with ol' Chet makes me wanna SEE how those musical TITANS did it.--JD Sr., LCNM
Of course it's great. As to Atkins and Snow, Chet once said that Hank was great to record because when he showed up, he was ready to go--no need for more rehearsing. Apparently, they were friends, though Snow's upbringing--he was an abused child and went to sea when he was 12--made him a bit tough to get close to.
Austrian marches travel well.

Just love the tonality of Chet's playing. It's so distinctive. I could pick him out of a crowd anywhere.

This instrumental has been widely played in many countries. This version ranks right up there with any of them.
