in the beginning, when you draw very thin lines that forms the fish head, well .. when i try to do that my brush creates two lines instead of one.. i mean the end of the brush is not aligned in one thin point like yours.. do you think it is a problem with my brush or my technique? (im a begginner)
While I do understand the concept behind of sumi-e painting, there is no reason to bash western painting because they do it differently. There are many ways to praise an artwork/style, criticizing another one is not one way.
I was very sad reading some of these bad comments. For those who think you are not creative enough I would suggest viewing all the videos you have subscribed.
Other than that, criticism that lack constructive comments should not be posted and as far my limited knowledge of Zen budism goes, no zen master would approve such thing.
It doesn't metter if he is copying! He's just showing to people like me how to paint!I'm a very visual person and I don't really like reading,it's a lot more pleasant to watch someone doing something you want to learn how to,the way he holds the brash ,how is drying it to have less ink, etc.
Good point though-it would've better with comments and explanations what and why is done the way it is.
Such negative comments saying how he is copying. Well i say even if he uses a book it takes great talent to make such a picture i bet if i gave these people that exact book and the same tools they could not create a picture half as great 5/5

In Japan there are TV shows where one of these 'artists' takes four celebrities and by teaching all these 'tricks', gets them all to reproduce something which to the uninitiated looks like artistic achievement, but is simply a facsimile. There are dozens of magazines sold here too, which show you how to exactly reproduce others' Art. Of course they haven't realised that the Arts used to be for self-expression (even in Japan) and they have essentially destroyed them and made them empty.
you have no idea what sumie is. It's a zen painting, focusing on simplicity and endless lines. It's not about "originality" or any competition (that American/western artists are so overtly focused on) --Sumie is never the same, so him using an image which could be 1000's of years old as a reference b/c it's painted by a MASTER doesnt mean shit - if you can capture the energy of an entity with a single stroke, through a sumie brush... Honestly just dont limit your judgments to TV programs ok?

What he is doing here is simply copying! (note the book in the top right corner) Everything he does, from the way he holds the brush and the way he dilutes the sumi is calculated and pre-prescribed, he is essentially no more than a machine performing a function. There is no self-expression here and so the viewer should not attribute any artistic skill to this 'performer'.

I think I should shed a little light on the truth here. Firstly the modern incarnation of all the Japanese Arts, is not about expression, but simply about following form (kata). Every school or tradition, be it in flower-arranging, tea, calligraphy, dance or theatre has a set pattern and structure which must be strictly adhered to. There is no room for creativity - creativity and self-expression is not the point. The point is to simply adhere to and propagate a particular style.
After viewing your video again I can see why you are so sensitive to questions about the tail of the fish in your work; It's atrocious! You technique in general is clumsy and heavy handed. You should receive more instructions if you wish to become even marginally proficient.
Lovely painting. I appreciate you showing us the little steps that take place with the ink stone. My only request is that it would be nice if in the next video the camera was a touch more stable, so that it doesn't shake or blur out of focus every now and then.
I like this video because it shows your inking station. It is great to see how you load the brush- fascinating.

what kind of sumi brushes are you using? i cant find any that will maintain an angle like that

It's always a pleasant experience watching your sumi-e videos.
You handle the brush with such grace but with a decisiveness and confidence that makes it look easy and beautiful. I really like the brush techniques.
Regardless, thank you so much for sharing these and I hope you continue to do so :O

Damn, I'm all for keeping it real, but that was pretty rough, and from someone who's credentials are............................
Everyone develops their own techniques, that is why Picasso is different than Monet, or Hopper.
Dave Chapelle's - When keeping it real goes wrong; might be worth you time to watch.

The tails of fish done in sumi-e never seem to be in proper proportion to the fish. Is this intentional?

That is because you are a moron that has no clue about perspective, or artistic intent.

Your paintings are beautiful and you make Sumi-e seem effortless, which it isn't.
I am just learning this technique and would like to know what type brush you use as it seems large compared to the ones I have.

this might be called chinese ink brush, made of weary hair. harder than calligraphy one. the length of hair is about 3 cm.
