I test drove one of these yesterday, a 2010. The one I tested had power windows, air conditioning, and a nice radio with a CD player. The salesman told me I could have it "out the door" for $15, 502. I'm not sure if that's a spectacular deal but I was (and still am) considering a Chevy Cruze. But when I tested drove the Cruze I thought I'd like it more than I did. The Cruze was nice but I'm not sure spending $10,000 more for it is justified. I like the white instrumentation on the Focus, btw.
must not have been flooring it, i have a 2003 focus, 2.0 and i havent done a 0-60 yet, but when i floor it, it instantly screams, almost the entire time. (i have no tach so i dont know the rpms) and its automatic
@fanofdavidsfarm I think they have different motors in them now. My mom has the 2.0 Zetec with an automatic in an '02. A peppy little sucker, but it seems to lose a lot of its balls as it aproaches 80km/h or so.
@ryfin2000 I think theyre the same, same zetec, on ford website, it advertises about the 2010 focus's it says its fun to drive, well i guess but not when youre trying to go fast. haha
@fanofdavidsfarm According to wikipedia (so you KNOW its accurate :P) from '05 on they use the duratec i4 insted. Just going with what the masses tell me...
@ryfin2000 oh, i still think the zetec is a shitty engine anyway, never had a problem with mine but it runs like shit, and vibrates like crazy, new plugs and wires, and didnt change anything,
Wow, my underpowerd 2001 Sable with the Vulcan can do 0-60 in about 8.7-8.9 seconds depending on the day. What, this came close to 11 sec from what I checked on the vid.
These cars are not fast at all. I drove one on a 800 mile trip. They get great gas milage. After driving what felt like forever my ass didnt hurt at all from the trip. The car has some nice seats.
Does this still use the Ford DOCH 16v 2.3l 4-cylinder? or is this like the 2.5l one? Anywho, my first gen Mazda 6 has the same motor and similar components and stock it got to 60 in about 8.6 seconds, here it looks like its 10 seconds =/
It actually uses a 2.0l Duratec I-4 engine, making 140hp, 143 with the Manual transmission. Another thing about the newer models--specifically the coupes--they come with a different final drive ratio so they do have a bit more pep. If I didn't have 3 feet of snow around here now, i'd throw a video up showing you guys what the 09 Coupe SES Auto is like.
The engine is very similar to the Mazda 3's, just without variable valve timing.
ive been in 2 of these now...and they are decent cars....the big downfall to me is the throttle response on the automatic transmission...its seriously 20 years behind compared to my 90 accord lol....i kid you not...its weird!!
@halfam The gears are so tall so Ford can squeeze some extra highway mileage out of the car. Also the reason most smaller cars have had 4spd autos up until now is cost.
Okay. Hands down, Nissan Sentra is the quickest 0-60 time. Then comes Mazda 3, followed by a near equivalent of Ford Focus and Toyota Corolla. (Corolla is faster than focus by a couple tenths of a second)
Ok i have an 09 focus se 2d coupe 5spd.....you seriously should have gotten the 5pd. i race an auto that was identical in a 1 mile race and a i had time at the end of the run to get out and talk to some one before he showed up =)
Well it already is reported to get 43MPG I don't think another gear is going to help. Maybe in city driving, where it already gets upwards of 25. It has decent acceleration, it really doesn't have to be better. Why raise the price by adding a 5 or 6 speed transmission when the 4 speed fits it perfectly?
It only gets 33-35mpg on the highway and 24mpg in the city. Of course it doesn't NEED to be any better, but Ford should try to strive for perfection. I'm sure they could make a car that could beat the Honda Civic if they tried. Also, it looks bad for the focus when you are comparing to another vehicle, such as the Honda Civic which has a 5 speed automatic.
I've read reviews and I know somebody who has one, he gets 42mpg on the interstate at 74mph with the automatic. The average person has no clue about gears nor do they really much care.
EPA ratings are almost always higher than "real life" gas mileage, so i highly doubt 42mpg at 74mph is possible in an automatic Focus. Maybe Ford is in such bad shape because they think that nobody cares about whether or not the cars that they produce are competitive. Obviously, someone cares about how many gears cars have, because few cars today have 4 speed automatics. Even many other Ford models have 6 speed autos. Why not the Focus?
My god, it is quite common for EPA ratings to be lower than the actual mileage. The focus is one of those things. Ford isn't in bad shape either, they are doing quite well and are much more competetive than GM or Chrysler. And again, why raise the cost of the car for a 6 speed that is unnecessary, it would only raise gas mileage in the city. The 6th gear ratio would be about equal to the fourth gear ratio. Why not complain about the 140HP engine? The norm is 170 now. It gets by just fine.
If it got better mileage than the EPA estimates, ford would be advertising, like Volkswagen did with the Jetta TDI. Ford is in bad shape. It doesn't appear that they are, but they actually borrowed more money than GM and Chrysler, which is money that they may not be able to pay back. Also, I would gladly pay an additional $500 for a 6 speed automatic. The Focus would be just fine with 140hp if it had more gears, like the Honda Civic which also has 140hp.
I'm sorry you really don't know what your talking about. Go look edmunds reviews, you'll see I'm not lying. It is quite common for cars to exceed the EPA ESTIMATES. ESTIMATES being the keyword. Why pay more money for minimal benefit huh? 2 more gears will get you 2mpg better in the city, and 1 second faster 0-60. OOOOH thats worth $500.
I agree that there are times, when a car will exceed its EPA estimates. But, i do not believe that a car rated a 33mpg on highway is capable of achieving 42mpg, unless you are coasting. It would be cheaper, over the life of your car, to pay an additional $500 for 6 speed automatic, if it would improve your mileage by several miles per gallon. For me personally, improving the 0-60 time by 1-1.5 seconds would be completely worth the extra cost. However, not everyone would agree with the later
I got a 2008 Ford Focus auto and I get no less than 30 mpg in the city and I easily get 40 mpg on the highway. And guess what, I live at 5400 ft. So, seriously, you can shut up now.
my versa cvt is rated at 33 highway. my last 3 tanks of driving has been over 33 mpg with not all highway. dis mileage includes city traffic in 5 different towns over a 170 mile drive. i've witnessed over 37 mpg with a light foot of not all highway driving.... it is easy to exceed highway mpg if u dnt have a lead foot. city mileage is a different story. bring your car to nyc and tell me u r going to get 30 mpg lol!
The Canadian government rates the Focus automatic at 6.0 l/100Km, so more than 39 MPG (US). 42 MPG isn't that much better. It's all about how you drive and where you drive. You have to drive at around 60 mph constantly to do it, but it's not hard at all.
The easiest way to get better fuel economy is to change what's between the steering wheel and the driver's seat. That's true for all cars.
The 2011 Mustang v6 has 305hp 31mpg and will eat this car for lunch for 23,000. Ford needs to work one power, and efficiency for their small cars big time.
Wow, that 4spd automatic transmission is a huge deal breaker for me. At least the 4spd auto in my old Contour shifted to 2nd at 34mph. 45mph in first gear with a 2.0? Who green-lighted that?
