a new car back in the day was not only just another new car, it was a "dream car", and the way they displayed them was corney, yes, but elegant and unoffensive. A hell of alot of effort went into adverts those days. Maybe just as much does these days too but it fails to show. Best example of ott ad for 50's is Design for Dreaming.
Nice, I had a '60 four door ford 292 CID 3 on the tree rubber mat , had no markings other than F O R D
Had a Skyliner, Sunliner, and a Galaxy too all with 352 automatics, By far the 292 was the fastest. had a Mercury 600 too, that had a in line 6 and was very quiet and smooth running and a Comet all in the span of 3 years, of course these were all used up cars, Oh I did have a '59 convert too that one I managed to smash up I think it had a 352 3 on the tree = 3 speed shift
Cheap oil and gas allowed Detroit to build simply engineered big fat cars that looked like they were well made by laymen because the judged the cars by what they see and felt. All these 1960 Fords were full of rust holes by 1965.
@jvarela965 You are just plain wrong. I would bet you are in your 20s, maybe 30s at most. I was there. These cars were extremely well made and highly rust resistant.
@4pointedstar I am 45. My grandfather was a former Stutz and Pierce - Arrow dealer. These cars were just modern day Ford Fiestas made longer wider and FATTER.

A number of these delightful commercial productions are viewable on the Prelinger Archives. Thankyou for posting here for all to see, that may be unaware of the (less known) internet library.
It's like commercials are getting shittier and more unoriginal everyday. So back then they had sweet ass themesongs for each kind of car, but now all we can think of is using some 10 year old overplayed shit you still hear on the radio all the damn time?
i have 3 Fords and am happy with them all. have 250,000 miles on my '97 mustang - can't get much more dependable than that. maybe you've had bad luck with a ford product - and i agree they made some bad cars esp in the 70s and 80's - but sweeping generalizations are of no great use to anybody, at least when they can be so easily disproven...
I drive a 2003 Thunderbird, and it drives absolutely beautifully. Ford is #1 in quality amongst American manufacturers. Their reliability is on-par with Japanese manufacturers.
My dad was a BIG fan of the big fords(Ie Crown Victoria,Grand Marquis).
I own three fords a 1994 Ford Taurus with 160K miles. 1994 Ford Escort LX wagon and a 1996 Ford Escort LX 5-doo hatchback the other tw are from Canada. They DO NOT have those cheesy motorized belts.
why yes ford are junk kill them and all who build them, (sic) . while henry's model T was OUT MASS PRODUCING EVERYONE ELSE how many cars were europe putting out for its masses. still mr ford was sharp he cared for THE UNITED STATES . type in model t magnetic engine good read . my pic is the squarebird
That commercial is from the Spring of 1960(you can say a throw back to, or an actual
extension of the 50's) in which it was the final year of Dwight Eisenhower's presidency, just right before the fall election which lead to JFK becoming president in January, 1961. That commercial does epitomize the 50's with all of the innocence of that time.
yeah actually, the Media is theo nly one making it seem like all new cars have had TONS of researcha nd dvelopment to get 26MPG in a KIA Sportage. Its not. they dont care at all. they dont need to try. Old cars got just as good gas mileage, and most people are so misinformed they dont even believe that, like you. I have a 65 that gets 38 mpg. Its not a big deal.
Where did we go wrong with cars? If you look at any car that isn't a luxury car, you'll realize that all cars pretty much have the same ugly, egg shaped body. This is an age where real cars were built, unlike now.
What do you mean cheezy? The culture of cars has certainly changed. Hence the problems of GM, Chrysler, and Ford today. When you see a 50's car coming you can recognize it from a block away. Who recognizes the cars of today? The most beautiful styling there is right here. Why not big when gas was 24 cents a gallon. Your windows cleaned, oil check, tires checked, and a set of glasses with every fill up. I forgot the gas wars as well down to 19 cents a gallon.
How cheezy! It's amazing how much our culture has changed since then, but it's also amazing how similar the auto industry is, in that they think Americans want gigantic hulking cars...
Fantastic ad. Very glam, beautifully shot. The sad thing is how the US was so racially divided in those days with the promo's all-white country-club setting.
Falcons were awesome on gas. 1960 had a 140cc straight 6. With a stick shift you could probably realistically get 26 miles a gallon. Automatics were probably closer to 20.
This is going into my favorites. I worked on a 1959 Ford F100 for awhile then got a 1969 F100. I think my grandma had a T-bird like that though. 5 stars!
One of the best commercials Ford ever made! That 1960 Falcon was a COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL way to usher in the New Frontier and the then new decade. That was a mighty fine Ford along with its Better Idea kin - the serious Galaxie, that damn good Thunderbird and that really cool Falcon. Who couldn't love these heartwarming classics? Damn! Talk about Better Ideas!
When I was a little kid my Grandfather bought a Brand New 1963 Galaxy. He and I went on a summer "road trip" and visted family and went to the San Diego Zoo. Never forget that new car smell...
Loved this country club setting. Brings back the memories. Only car you would show up in was the T Bird though. Had to have a Lincoln otherwise. The Falcon was something my blue collar Polish uncle drove like forever. As we all know the ugly duckling Falcon would grow up to be the Mustang.
This ad is great, delivered in style and with a hint of prestiage. The new FORD FALCON released in USA & here in Australia in 1960. The model line from the 1960 model can be traced in Australia to 1987. The marquee name lives on into 2007 with a recent press release "new models on the way in 2008 with FALCON leading the charge." Well Done FORD Thankyou
Mr Henry Ford 11 & Frank McNamara for your vision into the future. Success down under for the blue oval.
What a "Populuxe" classic!!! Nothing could epitomize the early '60's better than this commercial. It was the last of the postwar era...in some ways, America at it's best. I consider myself fortunate to be just barely old enough to remember it.
I wonder what it would take to build a company where we could introduce these wonderful old car styles but with the safety and built of today-none of these "new" Beetles etc. keep the old style and design but add the safety features and updated durable metallic/plastic materials. You'd probably have to be a millionaire to do such a thing although I wish someone did because there is quite a market for vintage cars out there these days.
back when people actually cared about "the newest design" and yes im hearing disney here too desilu. almost blatant..wonder if disney got mad at this.
The background people evolved into the audiences for infomercials in the way they interact with each other and create excitement for the product. The Falcon looked like the corniest of the three and turned out to be the best loved classic, I think.
Amen, anouncer commenting that the Falcon seats 6 adults and gets 30MPG.. Interesting to see gas milage played a part of selling even back then.. My Dad had a 60 Galaxie, he painted it red in the winter. Paint blushed because of the cold and turned it pink.. funny he drove it that way..
The 60's were great, for car at least. No smog checks, the beggining of the horsepower wars, what do I know, I am only 18, sound good to me. I love my 65.
I did my research, I own a 65 Fairlane. Not the "best" Ford but it was everything I wanted. I took it apart and now can't afford to put it back together. I just plain love my cars, what can I say.
