The Mars series books are not so much science fiction as they're fantasy/romance novels (especially the original trilogy). The scientifical inventions do not play very big part in the books, although there are some interesting ideas (especially in my opinion in the Mastermind of Mars). These books are definitely classics. I would recommend reading at least the whole original trilogy (Princess of Mars, Gods of Mars and The Warlord of Mars).
please don't compare this to twilight and just because its science fiction doesn't mean that there shouldn't be romance in it >_> that's just silly. why should a book be one dimensional? were not one dimensional creatures. Also you're a very pretty girl but no more tweezin them browns hunny!
Considering I've also read Naruto, The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Eragon, The Warded Man, and The Name of The Wind, I think it's safe to say that we have similar taste in books.
As for a recommendation, I would have to say that you should read and review Game of Thrones (it's the first book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series).
You... are... THE cutest... book reviewer I'ver ever seen. I would like to know your opinion on "The unbearable lightness of being" a novel from Milan Kundera, You'll probably like it, there's a lot of metaphors about human behavior that makes you think of how we are in our relationships, a lot of deep ideas too. There's also a movie with the same name from 1988 starring Daniel Day-Lewis & Juliette Binoche, not as good as book. Keep on reviewing!
@SamiJReads Don't forget to watch the movie on March 9th, also I think you should buy the John Carter Movie Novelization that also includes A. Princess of Mars. It's two books in one, = 540 pages. the first 203 pages is the John Carter Movie Novelization. The novelization is based from the movie and it's exactly like the movie
The whole thing is pretty much just wish fulfillment on Burroughs' part. He succeeds at everything because he's just supposed to be Burrough's badass alter ego who gets the insanely hot chick and kicks everything's ass. Also: Martians lay eggs but have bellybuttons. WTF
I like your review Sami. You know, if you put on a Princess Leia bikini you'd make a hot looking Dejah Thoris. You've go the dark hair and a nice complexion.
@Kenn17886 If anything, Star Wars and Avatar should be compared to John Carter; I have a feeling Lucas and Cameron got some of their ideas from these books.
@SamiJReads Yea they did, get their ideas from this novel. Proof here. movies.ign.com/articles/121/1218324p1.html "Another challenge facing John Carter is how influential the material actually is. When the first trailer launched in December, some critics called it an 'Avatar clone' thanks to 12-foot digital aliens. Others reckoned it looked (gulp) like the Star Wars prequels. Those films probably wouldn't exist without JC, but many fans don't know that."
@SamiJReads Your feeling is right. Both of those guys have actually admitted that they were big fans of the Edgar Rice Burroughs' Mars series. And many other artists (film makers, writers etc.) and scientists have admitted that the Mars series have had a huge impact on them. Those books are classics!
I read those books first when I was about 10 years old, and I read them again recently. And still 20 years later they were as intriguing as they were when I was just a little boy.
I really liked the John Carter series. I must say I did read it a fair bit of time ago (though I have reread it since), but I also read all ten books at a go which does lend a different coloration to the books for me.
As for the romance, I just took it more as something to drive the plot along. As such, the romance itself might not be necesary, but I thought it brought out the difficulties of interplanetary communication pretty well.
I particularly enjoyed the beginning with the Tharks as well.
@blisatx True, the romance did help with driving the plot, but it was still too much for me, haha. The Tharks were my favorite of the two races though; their ways and opinions on life and community were very unique and made them stand out on their own
