Unfortunately you're both wrong !! This song along with the Phantom of the opera was originally written by Andrew Lloyd Webber specifically for his wife Sarah Brightman. The part of Evita was tailored for Sarah Brightmans vocals. Sarah has a range in excess of 3 octaves and sings this song better then any one else.

@aumi244 actually, ALW wrote this for Julie Covington in 1976 on the studio recording, before the musical even made it to stage. And even after that, the first woman to play the role of Ava Peron was Elaine Paige in the original london cast. Sarah brightman came along several years later.

@critchley3819 Yes it's somewhat based around the Peron period of "democratic rule" or something of that like. However theatre being theatre likes to exaggerate from histroical fact a bit.

Don't cry for me Argentina, is about Eva leaving (figuratively) and them feeling I guess betrayed by her absence to their social issues. But I don't you'd be better going to a library and looking at a book on Argentina's political history.
