A point I wanted to make when making that comment was. Name one game translated into a movie that was a good movie? The best one I can think of is either Tomb Raider because I like watching Angelina Jolie but I'm weird like that or Prince Of Persia which was a decent movie probably because the guy that originally made the video game was there to keep his vision of that masterpiece unhindered by film makers. Which is what I'm afraid will happen with this game and ruin it. So much can go wrong.
@MythologicalGames But if I went to name a book translated into a movie... there are a lot of flops, of course (a great amount of movies of all kinds are flops), but many great successes - especially for books with elements like BoT (some parts would even get better, being more visual [due to video game origins] than fitting). Seeing that the people working on the film are ardent fans who are sticking close to the feel of the series, and Cyan with Rand Miller is approving and close by...
@Tin That is a really good point. From the perspective that Myst book (not the video game) being made into the movie there are plenty going through my head that are masterpieces. Perhaps the Video Games translated into Movies have been flops because they try to appeal to the gamers as well as just normal movie goers. Hopefully they don't bother with making sure gamers enjoy the movie specifically but everyone. IMO I still think it'll be a flop, unfortunately, especially without quality visuals.
@MythologicalGames Since it's based off the novels (which in turn are made for the same kind of audience as films, give or take a bit [and a lot of the give or take is the visual eye candy aspect which movies need more of than books, where the books - coming from a game background - excel in]), and they've got some quality producers and writers attached, who have written several blog posts on how they see the need to balance and how to get something universal - it should be pretty wide audienced
@MythologicalGames And (sorry, ran over the character limit on the last comment, since I am a bit longwinded) I don't think we need to worry too much about it not having quality visuals. It's aimed for a big budget for such things, and they have an appreciation for well used visuals (including usage of non-cg stuff where it fits better, rather than just going crazy). There's several places which can make quality cg and other visual stuff for films, and many have some recognition of Myst even.
This movie is going to suck. There are only two ways to have such detailed environments in a movie. Either have a lot of money for expensive sets or make the environments computer animated which still costs a lot of money but not like props would. Book of Ti'ana isn't even going to be anything Gamer's will recognize except D'ni and the Aitrus in the story is Atrus' great grandfather.
@MythologicalGames : There are, however, ways to have such detailed environments. With the budget that the movie is aimed for (and it's not unrealistic - the mysteriacs are getting large scale attention and respect), prop and cg effects can be worked out.
More importantly than recognition (there are connections which can be forced - there's Gehn, D'ni, and the linking book and D'ni flavor), the story is a good solid story that can be presented very well.
