Hello PCWizKid! I been subscribing in long time :D! and i like your vids. But which cpu cooler do you use in this vid? I need a small cpu! Pleas answer!
@zDanishKid its the Cooler Master V10 and it is by no means small, lol. The smallest one Cooler Master makes (that I know of) is the V6. Also look at the benchmarks just to be sure that it cools good enough for your system.
this 3 x 4870's would have won at a much higher resolution even with the weaker CPU.
i'm guessing they did not scale well at the lower resolutions, so you're effectively comparing 2 x 4870's vs. 2x 4890's. the 3rd 4870 gpu is bottlenecked and not doing any work.
Hey pcwizkid does the automatic fan controll worked with your cards ? I've got a Sapphire HD 4850 VaporX and it doesnt work, if i put it in auto, it doesn't controll the cooler and stays at 24%.
This is a prime example of an unfair comparison between the two. First off, if you really want to compare benchmarks of the GPU's then you need to use the same motherboard, processor, and memory. Using a Dual GPU and a Single vs two Single GPU is also not a good way to compare...
This is why I have little respect for comparisons of any PC component, because no one does it right.
Sounds stupid but looking at the first system.... I was under the impression cards used for crossfire had to be EXACTLY the same. in every single way even down to brand who made them am I wrong?
Of course the 4890's would win. The 4890 rig had a faster cpu and that makes a huge difference when you are running games in such a low resolution. If you had the resolutions set to 1920x1080, this could have been a good test aside the fact that they are two different systems. Peace.

Hi im new to pc gaming. Ill building a rig for games such as basically any source powered games such as half life 2, teamfortress2 and counter strike. will this be fine and any suggestions?
@Chefboyardee334 get a 460GTX hawks or or if you have some more money get a 6870. if you have the money get the 1055t. to save some money if your just running 1 GPU you dont need a 700watt PSU
4870 times 3 is more powerful. Also that system is so badly bottlenecked you have no idea. My Q9550 at 4.0ghz just didnt bottleneck my two 4870's and i was getting 23k in 3dmark06. Next time learn about bottlenecks etc
Hi, can someone please give me some help here, I recently upgraded my computer with a new Motherboard (Asus M4A78T-E) and a AMD AM3 Athlon II 3.0.ghz processor, 2GB of GDDR3 RAM, and finally two Radeon HD 5670 1GB graphicscards, running them in Crossfire, and I still get horrible results when I play GTA 4, with only 29,97 fps average. Is it the parts that I bought really that bad or am I doing something wrong? ): Please give me some help...
@fatsug50 I think those results in GTA4 are pretty decent for that video card, even with 2 of them, I dont know how it worked with just one videocard, maybe there is some difference. 5600 series are not really high end, so I think you should be happy with 30 fps. 5800 series are the high end cards at the moment, so take in mind that your cards are two series down.
I have a question too: can I make my PC use onboard HD4200 (AMD785GT) in 2D and switch auto to addon HD4870 in 3D, without need to switch monitor cable between them? Wanna make HD4870 turned off in 2D, cause it makes my room temp insane and I'm not needing its power 70% of the time ;(
@PCWizKid Oh well that sucks. Thanks for writing so quick. I have a couple of questions. If you answer them, great!
1.) Can ATI Radeon HD 4200 with 4gb ram and 2.3ghz proccesor speed run Call of Duty 4, Flight Simulator X, and most 3d games. I mostly want it to run Flight Simulator X smoothly on medium settings or higher. Will it do that?
2.) Is there any good external graphics card for laptops?
@PCWizKid What if i overclock it....Then will i be able to run those games at higher settings. If i overclock it, will the card show major improvement?
@PCWizKid i got the visiontek ati radeon hd 4670 1gb ddr3 graphics card and i would like to know what asus motherboard and amd would give me the highest efficiency in terms of visual quality in terms of hybrid crossfire .
@Traxxdays yes, you can have them in crossfire as long as the GPU class is the same. However it is recommended to use the same identical GPU. but it does not have to be the same brand.
hey pcwiz just wondering if this system would work this is my frist build AMD Phenom II 965 3.40Ghz Gigabyte GA-790FXTA-UD5 OCZ 4GB Kit (2x2GB), (1600MHz) DDR3 RADEON HD5870, 1GB (will i be able to crossfire this with another 5870?) Western Digital 1TB Sony DVD Burner Antec - NINE-HUNDRED-TWO Antec - 750 Watts Coolmaster V8 running windows 7 64 bit
very helpful video.. i have a request though.. can you do a radeon 5850 single and crossfire system setup with an amd proccessor. i am building an amd rig and i need to know the performance of the 2 5850s and 1 5850.
@mohsun123 i run 2x 5850s in my rig, its a i7 though... it handles everything i throw at it like a chainsaw threw butter :) 2x 5850 gets slight better performance than a single 5970, or 3 5770's, 2x 2970s give u about 20fps more in crysis
750w thermalkate.... i have sent the cards back as well as the motherboard and power supply. Getting at 850w coolmaster, sapphire 5770 and msi am3 board
try it with stock clocks, see if one card is defective, play the game with one card, then switch it out for the other and test it, see if the game support multi-gpu scaling, i heard GTA4 sometimes crashes in SLI, CFX hope this helps
i ahve 4850 1gb and 4870 512 in CFX (obviously limited to 512) ok..now i came across two probs..
9.12 ...in ccc i see both cards in overdrive..(crossfire enabled) but it shows 000 mhz...
in 10.xx drivers it shows properly, but in either drivers...in games it wont use both gpus..3dmark is exactly the same scores...only one time i saw a game use both gpus..but after a while it reduced performance by 50% and realised maybe 1 was only working...it seems drivers are turning it off?? (600watt psu)
If I had known that the 5870 was a 10.5' card I would have installed it in my system instead of this GTS 250 I have now, (my store was a little bit low on ATI cards) I would have much better performance. This is a good set up just for a bench but I want to remind people that you may want a larger case for Crossfire/SLI for better airflow with 3 to 4 fans because you don't want to fry your investments. Also it's good to go 100 watts higher than your system requires so you have room to grow.
@FiSKEN80, you might be able to get away with it as long as your PSU has the PCIe connectors to support two of these cards. Also I would not overclock them with only a 500W PSU. Keep everything at defaults and running cool and you should be able to get away with it.
go to 4870x2 rather than 2 4870s in crossfire if you haven't bought yet,, or if you have money just go to the newer hd5850, theyre even cheaper than 2 4870s.. then you can just crossfire it later if it gets slow..
my suggestion is to pick up a 850W or higher PSU. I am saying over 850 because you need to be able to power your ram, your hard drives, optical drives etc. hope this helps.
They CAN be different manufacturers, actually. And before you say it, just to clarify, I do not mean anything like managing to link up an ATI and an nVidia card somehow; I mean it's possible to, say, crossfire a Sapphire 4870 with a HIS 4870.
xxg00w0 why would you even have something like a sapphire model with a XFX ati cards ?? 1 they would be diffrent sizes and shapes for starters ...gees !!
Yes, but they need to be from the same 'family'. For example, you can crossfire, say a 5870 and a 5850, but you CAN'T crossfire a 5870 and 4870, or a 4870 and a 4570, etc.
ok and the 4870 512mb im using now it required a 500wat power supply ...so if i wanna crossfire 2 of them ...is that means i need a 1000wat power supply???
No. The 500 watts is to make sure you can run everything. The graphics card itself doesn't take 500 watts; if it did, there wouldn't be enough power for it, the motherboard, fans, processor, disc drives, etc. Also, most power supplies will break if you push them to the limit of their capacity for more than a short period of time.
You'll only need a 750 or 800 watt power supply to crossfire two of them; somewhat less if it's a really high quality one.
Hey I was just wondering I bought a brand new mobo A780GM-A from newegg yesterday and I'm not sure if I should buy the ATI 4850 or get vista and go with the hybrid 3200 and 3450 crossfirex combination.
plz message me back because I need to know what gets better frame rates before I make a decision on what graphics card to buy for my mobo.
You should try going for an ATI4770 as it uses lower power. Also, ATI 4850 is known for getting really hot. Overall the 4770 performs almost as well as the 4850 just lags a bit behind. Really good overall for $100.
PC-WK, do the 4890's have PhysX support. I will be going single ATi GPU for now, and probably add another 4890 later, or get a 5770 now and another 5770 later Or I can get 1 NV card, probably a GTX 260
terrible PSU, but I don't have time or money to get another.
Apparently it's fine for single, non-oc'd GPU's.
750W CiT PSU Dual +12V rails 20Amps on each rail
Of course I'd change it later if I was going CrossFire
@AmH032uTuB PhysX is overrated for most gaming experiences, you wont even notice it, so forget it, just get the 5770 and your set to go with DirectX 11 support for future games. Cheers
So do you reccon my spec with a 5770, will do Crysis/C. Warhead at DX10 V. High/Enthusiast @ 1280x1024 with good FPS? I turn everything to Win Classic (I'll be on 7 Ult. x64) with Game Booster running, plus some extra processes turned off
If it will, would I get some AA aswell, I will not be OC'ing RAM, CPU, GPU, or FSB...
im gonna to buy 2 ati 4870s and i have the motherboard which support sli but i need a power supply, how can run crossfire. how do i now if a PSU have crossfire certified?
Hi PCWizKid , i have a sapphire 4730 series card...well i have 2 actually ,but at the moment im using 1 with a gfx paddle board for cross fire hybrid !! for some reason my ATI sofware doesnt say crossfire or have that enable tick box like yous ...i dunno why ,will this show in the ATI software when i start using both my sapphire 4730,s ? Please help .
What such a low res? those FPS were terrible I get better FPS on my single 1GB 4870 on a 1680x1050 res!!!! Why wasn't the res at least 19x12????? I was debating between xfire and just upgrading to a 4890 later but no xfire for me so far all benchmarks are poor same for sli :(
obviously the dual gpu will win, scaling drivers are really bad. hardware is going too far ahead of software. u'll have a lot more micro studder in the x3
if you had 3 4870's all clocked the same it would have done better instead of x2 and the x1 overclocked differnetly it would have made the difference this is only becuase crossfire gets about 60% of the ture power of a graphics card the closer they are synced the better
Well, I dont think so, its deff. not the black edition. Its just the normal one, and im getting the Phenom quad black edition 3.2 ghz in a few weeks so it doesnt matter.
@rathy21, like I said in my video , this is not and "offical" review, but a fun comparison for you to pick who you think would win based on the mix of hardware . The results are surprising in some tests. that was the point of the video.
AMd 550x2 phenom (might overclock it to 3.8GHz and also will upgrade to better cooler)
4890 xfx
OCZ 700w power supply
500GB harddrive
i am getting this pc soon and at christmas i will well might buy another 4890, will this be ok? or will my power supply and processor limit the power? give me info plz thanks
I understand the point of the video completely and enjoyed it very much. I guess what I really wanted to know is if you could test all cards in the X4 955 system because I'm considering running the AMD X4 955 on the same board you are running. I always get varying results between my Intel and AMD rigs. Thanks again for the video and quick response as I actually felt bad after I left my comments...I hadn't read any other comments till after the fact.
I hope the previous comment didn't come across in a bad way. I always enjoy watching your reviews as I find them to be very informative and helpful. :)
@maximus7651000, this was not a serious benchmark, but just a fun comparison of two gaming rigs. thats all. It was just to see what people guessed would win. Not to prove anything. I think you misunderstood the point of the video. This was not a official video review.
How is that an accurate test running the X4 810 @ 3.3 GHz vs the X4 955 @ 3.8 GHz? The test will have different scores due to different processors, clock speeds, motherboard performance etc... My 4870 X2 crossfired with my 4870 moderately outperformed my 4890's in crossfire with my QX9650 @ 3.6 - 4.2 GHz. Screen resolutions were 1680 X 1050 and 1920 X 1200. IMO you should have placed all cards in the same rig to give an honest bench.

This is hardly a fair comparison considering that the parts (besides the graphics cards) in the 4890 build are superior to the other build.

@windheavenX thats because you have a bad combiation, the HD4850 and 4870 dont go well together and are not recommended by ATI to crossfire.
PCWizKid 2 years ago
If I had known that the 5870 was a 10.5' card I would have installed it in my system instead of this GTS 250 I have now, (my store was a little bit low on ATI cards) I would have much better performance. This is a good set up just for a bench but I want to remind people that you may want a larger case for Crossfire/SLI for better airflow with 3 to 4 fans because you don't want to fry your investments. Also it's good to go 100 watts higher than your system requires so you have room to grow.

i want to buy 2x Ati HD4890 cards, but i got a power supply at 500Watt and 12V at 46A, its not enough right?
FiSKEN80 2 years ago
@FiSKEN80, you might be able to get away with it as long as your PSU has the PCIe connectors to support two of these cards. Also I would not overclock them with only a 500W PSU. Keep everything at defaults and running cool and you should be able to get away with it.
PCWizKid 2 years ago
thank you for the answer, yea i got the connectors. to bad i cant overclock them but ill save money for a new PSU after i buy the graphic cards.

this is probably the most dramatic filming PCWizKid has ever done.

nice video, 5* ;)
just a question, i want to buy a xfx4870 1GB and later I want to buy a second one (also xfx4870 1GB) to play crossfire.
Which power supply do I need? Is an Corsair or Coolmaster 700W power enough? Or do I have to get more power, or can I also use an 650W supply?
Rampagetube 2 years ago
go to 4870x2 rather than 2 4870s in crossfire if you haven't bought yet,, or if you have money just go to the newer hd5850, theyre even cheaper than 2 4870s.. then you can just crossfire it later if it gets slow..

not really,

my suggestion is to pick up a 850W or higher PSU. I am saying over 850 because you need to be able to power your ram, your hard drives, optical drives etc. hope this helps.

@marckydead, if you had a 650W yes you can crossfire, but not with 500W

can i have two different model of ATI cards crossfire together???
xxg00w0 2 years ago
Nope you need to have the same models dude !!!
stormshadow2100 2 years ago
can they be the same models but different Manufacturers???
xxg00w0 2 years ago
Nope they have to be the same Manufacturers and the same models !!!
stormshadow2100 2 years ago
They CAN be different manufacturers, actually. And before you say it, just to clarify, I do not mean anything like managing to link up an ATI and an nVidia card somehow; I mean it's possible to, say, crossfire a Sapphire 4870 with a HIS 4870.
MGlBlaze 2 years ago
xxg00w0 why would you even have something like a sapphire model with a XFX ati cards ?? 1 they would be diffrent sizes and shapes for starters ...gees !!
stormshadow2100 2 years ago
Yes, but they need to be from the same 'family'. For example, you can crossfire, say a 5870 and a 5850, but you CAN'T crossfire a 5870 and 4870, or a 4870 and a 4570, etc.
MGlBlaze 2 years ago
ok and the 4870 512mb im using now it required a 500wat power supply ...so if i wanna crossfire 2 of them ...is that means i need a 1000wat power supply???
xxg00w0 2 years ago
MGlBlaze 2 years ago
Hey I was just wondering I bought a brand new mobo A780GM-A from newegg yesterday and I'm not sure if I should buy the ATI 4850 or get vista and go with the hybrid 3200 and 3450 crossfirex combination.
plz message me back because I need to know what gets better frame rates before I make a decision on what graphics card to buy for my mobo.
upagainstinsanity16 2 years ago
@upagainstinsanity16
You should try going for an ATI4770 as it uses lower power. Also, ATI 4850 is known for getting really hot. Overall the 4770 performs almost as well as the 4850 just lags a bit behind. Really good overall for $100.
qik4n 2 years ago
@upagainstinsanity16 The Hybrid will not work with the 4850, its useless, and you will get more out of the 4850 by itself anyways
PCWizKid 2 years ago
what mobo should I go with for a build with 4870x2 in crossfire and an AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE ?
JegVilSeElgenX2 2 years ago
@JegVilSeElgenX2 , the Gigabyte MA790FXT-UD5P is great for crossfire
PCWizKid 2 years ago
And not even expensive either ^^
Thanks :D
JegVilSeElgenX2 2 years ago
PC-WK, do the 4890's have PhysX support. I will be going single ATi GPU for now, and probably add another 4890 later, or get a 5770 now and another 5770 later Or I can get 1 NV card, probably a GTX 260
terrible PSU, but I don't have time or money to get another.
Apparently it's fine for single, non-oc'd GPU's.
750W CiT PSU Dual +12V rails 20Amps on each rail
Of course I'd change it later if I was going CrossFire
P5Q Premium
C2Q Q6700 @ stock
2X2GB Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR2-800
AmH032uTuBe 2 years ago
@AmH032uTuB PhysX is overrated for most gaming experiences, you wont even notice it, so forget it, just get the 5770 and your set to go with DirectX 11 support for future games. Cheers
PCWizKid 2 years ago
Well, I hope I'm taking the correct advice ;)
PhysX just looked a nice extra for Mirror's Edge.
AmH032uTuBe 2 years ago
@AmH032uTuBe, yes at @ 1280x1024 for sure you will blow the game away at super high settings.
PCWizKid 2 years ago
@PCWizKid, well I think for DX11 support and my board being CrossFireX supported I could always get another 5770 later on.
But yes, I think I will get a 5770, just to ask you, do you think a 5770 is the optimum GPU for the P5Q Premium?
AmH032uTuBe 2 years ago
im gonna to buy 2 ati 4870s and i have the motherboard which support sli but i need a power supply, how can run crossfire. how do i now if a PSU have crossfire certified?

McCloudX22 2 years ago
obviously the dual gpu will win, scaling drivers are really bad. hardware is going too far ahead of software. u'll have a lot more micro studder in the x3
kingdong4 2 years ago
if you had 3 4870's all clocked the same it would have done better instead of x2 and the x1 overclocked differnetly it would have made the difference this is only becuase crossfire gets about 60% of the ture power of a graphics card the closer they are synced the better

@rathy21, like I said in my video , this is not and "offical" review, but a fun comparison for you to pick who you think would win based on the mix of hardware . The results are surprising in some tests. that was the point of the video.

I understand the point of the video completely and enjoyed it very much. I guess what I really wanted to know is if you could test all cards in the X4 955 system because I'm considering running the AMD X4 955 on the same board you are running. I always get varying results between my Intel and AMD rigs. Thanks again for the video and quick response as I actually felt bad after I left my comments...I hadn't read any other comments till after the fact.

maximus7651000 2 years ago
@maximus7651000, this was not a serious benchmark, but just a fun comparison of two gaming rigs. thats all. It was just to see what people guessed would win. Not to prove anything. I think you misunderstood the point of the video. This was not a official video review.
PCWizKid 2 years ago
How is that an accurate test running the X4 810 @ 3.3 GHz vs the X4 955 @ 3.8 GHz? The test will have different scores due to different processors, clock speeds, motherboard performance etc... My 4870 X2 crossfired with my 4870 moderately outperformed my 4890's in crossfire with my QX9650 @ 3.6 - 4.2 GHz. Screen resolutions were 1680 X 1050 and 1920 X 1200. IMO you should have placed all cards in the same rig to give an honest bench.
