  • i really wish this didn't remind me so much of my high school orchestra. Maybe they got bored of the piece and didn't really get into it.

  • Being a string player myself for over 13 years. This was downright sloppy.

  • @ 2:53, let the timpani power begin

  • the orchestra has to be bigger! but it's nice that the band does not perform in the ouverture.

  • dream theater is every one of these people playing in the orchestra and even more than then!!! the best!

  • the timing was off in some portions of the song, not strong in sound in switching tunes of the overture. surely this is not the same ppl who did the studio version. :/

and yet the auditorium may had had some echo? hmmmm.. but still think they could had done better for a live video recording..... ;/

  • @kimicansyn I don't think they could've done much better than this. All orchestral instruments were recorded in separate tracks by Rudess on the keyboard, in studio.

  • @kimicansyn The Studio version is not played by orchestra... it's all Rudess' job! :-P (for what I know, but I'm pretty sure about it)

  • This is so Ballsy for a rock band to orchestrate their midi patches.......

  • the orchestra doesn't like dream theater........ you can tell, I want over blown trumpets and everything. Muted flute, at 4:30 would sound great :) But I had to write for those instruments in my life :/

  • love the whole song

  • wasn't this when Dream Theater played with the Octavarium orchestra?

  • Would love to see a rerecording of this with the Metropool Orkest. Probably the only ochestra/big band that can manage such stuff (and hey, they also could manage Stevie Vay, and Zappa-related stuff)

  • Does anyone know where one could find sheet music from Overture?

  • Amazing

  • why were there drums on this part?

  • @DustinShaneYounce I mean "NO" drums?

  • The only problem is, how does one mosh to an orchestra? =P

  • dream theater takes the complex of tthe music and show us how beautifull is it to play, 'n listen, with songs with a start .. a midle and an end...

    dream theater is simply funtastic!

  • anyone else get reminded of Ludibrium from Maplestory? xD

  • OMG

  • Is an incredibe effort! its not an easy peace to play.. dont be mad

  • i wish dream theater would hear this version and they will be proud that the orchestra had a really good effort

  • @ROBINAMK5 Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is in a Dream Theater concert. They do the entire Overture in Six Degrees and acompany them in songs like Octavarium and Metropolis.

  • @ROBINAMK5 They actually did hear this version. Watch part 2 to see what I mean.

  • in the album, this piece has an compainment of the band this is only orchestra :/

  • I feel like if they had a more prominent percussion section in the orchestra , it would have sounded so much better. But you gotta give them credit, they not only learned this entire piece but other complex songs like Octavarium and Metropolis too, just think of all the time they had to put into getting used to all those key and time signature changes.

  • @KDawgAtsu I don't know if the stuff they are playing here is more complex than a lot of classical pieces. Mind you they are professionals... Add to that their ability to read sheet music like normal people read ordinary text and I think it was just "another day at the office" for the orchestra.

Though they usually don't get to play songs that are as good as these. :)

  • @KDawgAtsu They need a more prominent percussion. Really? With four timpanis AND Mike Portnoy?

  • @KDawgAtsu I doubt that, the speed would have been a difficulty but classical music, which in my opinion is the base of progressive metal because of its long pieces and musical freedom, also has a lot of different timesignatures. One of the reasons they have a conductor.

  • @KDawgAtsu Personally i dont find the time signatures not a real problem, it feels really natural to me.

  • @KDawgAtsu Who needs a percussion section when you have Mike Portnoy? I'm sure they knew that with him playing drums a full percussion section wouldn't be necessary to spend money on.

  • @willschoeff man portnoy is so fuckin overrated, c'mon he's solid as fuck but he's not really that impressive. Grant Collins...check that motherfucker out!!!! Drum portnoy under the table with one arm the lad!!

  • @danymann let's see you try to remember a 42 minute song and then play a whole bunch of other long ass songs so get back to me when you master all of it

  • @danymann Obvious troll.

  • think how wonderful a rock song has become a classical piece mr the alphasystem. flat it is but it is a mega effort

  • @GentalaMaya well, the original piece wasn't rock at all, was ( sort of ) classical.. and the sad thing is it sounded much better with digital instruments. I just wish an orchestra transposition could add something to the piece, not make it worst. See you.

  • @thealphasystem I like your comment. I think they couldnt hire the best orchestra, not like Metallica and their S&M. They might not be that familiar with classical piece either. Hope they would progress.
