Steve Brookstein didn't have a mediocre voice, to suggest as much is preposterous. His downfall was the fact that music was changing (for the worse) during the period he won and that he can't write his own music.

And marketable and star don't really go together. Plus, where have the last couple of winners ended up? Despite getting the teeny bopper vote, they've ended up nowhere.
