I think its nice to listen to an intelligent, breezy pop rock song like this without the burden of English words. It still has the human voice that so many music listeners require in their music, but it's in another language: its nice to be able to ignore the meaning and just enjoy the "sound" of the singing/melody.
@flowerdoodle LMAO Now you know how the rest of the world feels outside the US/UK empire. Guess what we been doing in Germany over the last 65 years? Not understanding lyrics, that's what LOL
This song was written, sung and produced by Haruomi Hosono who later founded Yellow Magic Orchestra. He was also a pioneer in techno music, just check out his albums Cochin Moon and Philharmony from 1978 and 1982, way ahead of their time.
Don't forget the albums Haruomi Hosono produced with YMO, like Paraiso (1977), Yellow Magic Orchestra (1978), Solid State Survivor (1979), BGM (1981), Technodelic (1981), Naughty Boys (1983), etc. Their influence on worldwide pop, dance and electronica music was huge.
It's also worth noting that after YMO disbanded in 1983, Hosono wrote the theme song for Hayao Miyazaki's 1984 anime movie "Nausicaa" and produced music for various popular J-pop artists after that.
If anyone wants their albums there are some torrents on piratebay. go on piratebay and there is a collection torrent.. damn happy end. this is what japan needs right about now. Love this song. God Bless Japan.
Happy End's most famous member was Haruomi Hosono, who would go on to join another influential band, Yellow Magic Orchestra, founded by Ryuichi Sakamoto. They would tour the world and be one of the first japanese bands to find large audiences in europe and america.
Actually, Yellow Magic Orchestra was founded by Haruomi Hosono, not Ryuichi Sakamoto. It was Hosono who invited Sakamoto to join YMO, not the other way around.
Ryuichi Sakamoto is sometimes wrongly credited as YMO's founder, mainly because he later gained a lot more worldwide fame (for his Hollywood film composing work, winning the Grammy, Oscar, Golden Globes, BAFTA, etc.) than Hosono.
It's hard to find their stuff. A couple of years ago their guitarist Shigeru Suzuki was caught in possession of pot. Drugs are a HUGE deal in Japan, and all their albums were pulled from shelves because of it. It's a shame :(
@lilpiska Their most famous album is Kazemachi Roman. It was voted the best album of all-time in Japanese music by Rolling Stone magazine. I know for a fact the album is available at 4chan.c om, under the Rapidshare section. You'll need some sort of winzip program to play it, though.
Actually, Happy End were active in the early 1970s, not the late 1970s. Happy End had already disbanded by the mid-1970s, and soon after, the band's former lead member Haruomi Hosono then founded the pioneering electro/techno/synthpop band Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) in 1977.
@marybyington I've recently bumped with this beautiful song without knowing any word from its lyrics but somehow sure that it would bring us a kind of good feeling. And under the recent sad circumstances it also makes me pray for Japan to rebuild itself very soon under the rising sun and to blossom again like their beautiful and delicate flowers.

@flowerdoodle I usually ignore the meaning in English songs anyway! Music always says more than language... much more.

Anyone know any similar songs? I like these lyrics and the vibe it gives. Reminds me a little of Mayonaka shounen totsugeki dan.

I'm feeling young people's ennui, languidness and nostalgia from this song.
This song make me peaceful like floating in air.
But it's very hard to translate this lyrics's mood in other languages.
Because the lyrics have many metaphors and not very ordinary Japanese words.
But I'm glad many people listen to "kaze wo atsumete(風をあつめて)". This is my favorite song.
I think the lyrics depict a view of TOKYO.
"hiiro no ho(緋色の帆)" means that "a scarlet sail".
It's the comparison to the TOKYO TOWER.

... I sing along now, makes me sad, thinking about Japan. At the same time, I sing it to support Japan and show unity.
